A mesmerizing story of love and loss, liberty and pain. As a mother I totally felt Faye’s fear as she realized her son and husband were missing. As the tale unfolded and secrets were revealed I was swept up into the mystery and intrigue of an unimaginable act which knocked me for six. What a great read.
Holy moly. This author had me tearing thru the pages to find out what happens next. Definitely loved this psychological thriller. 5/5
Another gripping thriller from Shalini Boland. The Marriage Betrayal isn't just a twisty psychological thriller, it's a story which delves into domestic abuse and the lengths a mother would go to to save her child. Faye is an excellent character, and, without spoilers, I was immediately drawn into the web that is her life.
Shalini is an absolute pro, able to grip the reader from the word go, but she is also excellent at dealing with very real and emotional themes. Thrilling, twisty, and incredibly well-written, The Marriage Betrayal hooked me in from the first page.
Shalina Boland has an amazing talent for telling a story that starts off quite average, but then BOOM you are hit by the twist and then you realise that the “average” story was actually exceptional, and it was just setting the scene!
Every one of her books is exactly the same - easy to read, descriptive and relatable and then that twist you just couldn’t imagine throws the whole book into a completely different direction.
More please!!
Loved this dark and twisty psychological thriller! Great characters that made it so easy to empathize, love or hate them. Such deep guarded secrets and the lengths we may go to in order to protect ourselves and our family. Great plot twist! Highly recommend.
Literally finished this in one sitting! Excellent story- and just when I read the twist, there was another I didn’t see coming!!!! Thank you for sharing your talent for writing amazing thrillers- I always look forward to reading your books ❤️
Shalini Boland is another author whose books I am eagerly anticipating because I know she delivers on suspense every time. The Marriage Betrayal was another intense book that is full of suspense and characters that you will find interesting and sympathetic. All of Shalini’s novels are equally excellent, you cannot go wrong with any of them!

It's true I'm a bit biased when it comes to Shalini Boland's work, as I've been a fan ever since I had the chance to read The Girl From The Sea back in 2016. Every time I hear a new psychological thriller is about to come out, I immediately add it to my wishlist even before reading the blurb... Shalini Boland's psychological thrillers have yet to fail me, and The Marriage Betrayal once again confirmed my love for her writing. Why was this another winner for me?
Well, first of all it's the writing that draws you right in, sets the tone and won't let you go until the very end. Every time I pick up a Shalini Boland story, I know I have to clear out my schedule beforehand and make sure nothing will disturb me while I read... Because it's a garantuee I won't be wanting to stop reading before I reach the final page if it can be helped. The Marriage Betrayal turned out to be another one of those reads. While it's true the pace is a tad slow in the beginning, with the first quarter of the story being what seems like a mosty ordinary family vacation in Swanage. There is always a hint of unrest and suspense lying just beneath the surface though; the run down gothic house they rented for the week setting the tone for the atmosphere. Tension is slowly building up as we start getting glimpses of Jake and his sister Lainy's past, with things escalating as Faye realizes that her husband Jake and their son Dylan are missing. Did something happen to them? Is there something more menacing at play? Secrets and lies are hinted at, but not revealed for a long long time; leaving you guessing what happened with Jake and Lainy in the past and what it has to do with the present. And what other secrets are they all hiding?
Like I said before, the building up is a bit slow and fans of faster psychological thrillers might struggle a bit with the first part of The Marriage Betrayal as there is more focus on the characters and mundane daily activities. I can promise you things WILL escalate and this story has quite a few shocking surprises for you lined up. The Marriage Betrayal will try to mislead you multiple times and try to make you look in the wrong direction... And even though I did start to guess some details of what was coming, there is no way to brace yourself for the end that Shalini Boland has for us in store. WHAT A TWIST!! It's not often a psychological thriller manages to surprise me, but this twist left me with my mouth hanging wide open and consequently saying 'NO WAY!' over and over again. And while I thought that The Marriage Betrayal was a solid 4 star read during most of the story, it deserves an extra half start for the explosive ending alone. Fans of the genre will without doubt have a great time reading this story.
I love this author and I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of her newest novel. It did not disappoint!! My attention was gripped from page one. There were so many twists and turns that I did see coming, which I absolutely love! The plot, characters, and ending were all so well developed and it was a great read. I finished it quickly and am anxiously awaiting the next novel by this author!
I am a huge fan of this author and her books never disappoint. Once again she has created a book that flows and grips the reader but without the complicated plot or final unexplainable twist that leaves the reader hanging and which seems to be the norm with today's Psychological thrillers. What we see is twist after twist after twist and all the ends neatly tied up at the end.
A perfect 5 stars from me
Twists arise in this tale of a marriage shrouded in secrets. Faye decides to surprise her husband with a trip back to the town he grew up in. Along for the trip is their six year old son, Dylan, and her brother and sister-in-law. The trip doesn't get off to a great start with rainy weather and her husband's increasingly downcast mood. Things get worse when her husband and son go missing after a dolphin-spotting trip. With the police involved, Faye needs to examine all she knows about her husband.
Another superb read by Shalini Boland, whose books I absolutely devour. I never saw the last twist coming, and that doesn't happen often. I would highly recommend to fans of the genre.
Thank you to Shalini Boland, Bookouture, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Marriage Betrayal just so happens to be set in a location I adore, a coastal location that the author describes in great detail I feel like I know the place. I did not see the plot twist coming and there was a little satisfaction at the end as the villain does/doesn't get what he deserves. I would have liked more depth to the characters revisited from the past in the present but overall worth a read.
Those who follow my reviews will know I’m a huge loud proud fan of Shalini Boland I just adore her books and style of writing, she has a wonderful way of immediately engaging her readers and keeping them engaged throughout her books.
The marriage betrayal was no exception, a well deserved fat shiny 5 stars for this book which had many unexpected twists and turns especially the twist at the end which I was NOT expecting at all! That’s what I love about Shalini’s books you believe you’ve figured the plot and twist out and then you’re delivered that final shocking twist at the end that leaves you reeling.
We meet Faye, her husband jake and their son Dylan, Faye has surprised jake along with his sister Lainy to a week away for jakes birthday to their home town they grew up in, Lainys husband Tom and their two daughters also come along for the surprise, Faye believes jake will be over the moon to be back in his home town which Faye thinks he misses, however upon arrival jake and lainy are both infact not happy at all to be back and both say they’d have rather never come back, cutting the holiday short jake takes Dylan seal spotting on the morning they’re due to head back home to London however they don’t return and are missing which becomes a race against time for Faye who is frantic to find out what has happened to her husband and son, Faye soon realises jake and lainy are both hiding a secret from their childhood which could be linked to jake and Dylan’s disappearance and she is determined to find out what secrets jake has been hiding, he turns out to be not the man she thought she knows.
We are taken from past to present and discover what secrets jake and lainy are hiding- I wasn’t prepared for that twist at the end! It left me flabbergasted.
I’m always eagerly awaiting Shalinis new books and I was over the moon to receive a copy of the marriage betrayal from Netgalley. I devoured and thoroughly enjoyed this book as the rest they are amazing.
I came across the writing of Shalini Boland about a year ago and can't get enough of her books. Her books are full of suspense and I frequently finish them in one sitting due to the excitement she generates throughout. This one was much the same, fairly simple plot but an entertaining psychological thriller.
Faye Townsend has planned a family holiday to the small seaside town where her husband grew up. What should be a perfect get away turns out disastrous when her husband Jake and six-year-old son Dylan go for an early morning walk along the clifftops and don’t come back. The search for her family begins and when her sons cap is found on the beach the worst possible outcome is feared. Faye is questioned by the police and they want to know everything about the man she married. The book switches between present day and the past, telling of Jake and sister in their teenage years. The suspense builds and builds as details of the past are revealed which may explain the reasons for her husband and sons disappearance.
I would like to thank both Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Net Galley and Bookouture for an early copy of The Marriage Betrayal. I was so looking forward to this book, Shalini Boland is the new author to go to for psychologicals. I wasn’t disappointed but it was not one of her best at all . It was a very fast read and the ending did catch me by surprise. Something was missing from it though like that intense feeling that you have had when you read her other books like you need to know what’s going on so you don’t want to stop reading. All in All it was enjoyable.
I was never quite sure where this book was heading and that’s a great thing! I was guessing all along the way and for me that’s part of the fun, when reading this genre. Nothing is given away and nothing is held back either. Hard to explain and I’m not sure how she does it but it’s sooo damn good. I so appreciate how all the characters are with you the whole time. There’s no oh hey guess who it’s Uncle Tom that’s made this whole mess that’s only introduced on the last page. I’m so bad at this lol but the way that things unfold are complex but don’t seem complex.. it it timing perhaps? I don’t know. It’s like you’re getting answers so you’re able to be patient until the end mostly but also are too dumb to realize you still don’t know lol I love when stories end like this one did. It’s dessert with a side of dessert. Great, great book. Thanks so much for the awesome work you do
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced review copy. Fantastic read! Another great book from Shalini Boland. Looking forward to her next book.
This is the 5th book I have read by Shalini Boland and it did not disappoint. I received an ARC from Netgalley for an honest opinion and boy this story through me for a loop.
It starts off simple enough. Jake and Faye go on holiday with their son Dylan; taking Jake's sister Lainie and her husband and two girls with them. But their holiday is set back in their hometown when they were kids. A lot of secrets are there so the book goes back and forth from now to then. But it is easy to follow. Before they are ready to leave Jake takes his son Dylan on a morning outing for father and son time and does not return. The story then covers the task of finding out what happened to them. Did they get hurt? Were they kidnapped? The police get involved and everyone is frantic.
So just when you thought you knew where the story was headed....It.Takes.A.Huge.Detour.....
Never did I see this story line coming and was totally thrown off. This book will be out July 8; place it on your TBR list! You'll be glad you did.
OMG! What a story! Another exciting thriller to get lost in, which I just LOVED!! Faye and her brother-in-law have planned a seaside surprise for their loved ones (their spouses are siblings). Except, their spouses are not happy to be at the seaside - the sight of their childhood. Yep, the surprise is a not a good one. So, they decide to pack it up and leave. Only, on the day they are supposed to leave Faye's husband (Jake) and son go missing. Say what? Talk about a nightmare vacation! As we get flashbacks to the time when Faye's husband was a teenager, we learn about his past and its not a good one. And as the story unfolds, we learn that maybe Jake isn't really missing after all. That's all I will share, because this was such a good story. You have to read it for yourself! Loved it!!
Wow what an absolute mind f***..... Jake and Lainey grew in the small seaside town of Swannage, their respective spouses decided that they would surprise them with a small break away there as they hadn't been back in 17 years... nostalgia doesn't exactly appear to be the case when things go horribly wrong from start to finish...... When Jake and his son fail to return from an early morning dolphin viewing outing, Faye gets worried, eventually having to report them missing to the local police.... a massive search ensues..... will she be able to cope with what they find?? Its hard to say much more without giving away too much but suffice to say this is one rollercoaster of emotions, twists and turns you are not going to want to miss.....an unputdownable psychological thriller which will leave you reeling....
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
