Thank you to the publisher and author for providing me with a digital ARC of this title via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoy a good mystery "who-dunnit" story every once in awhile and was excited to read this. The summary reminded me of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, both centering around a group together on holiday where one turns up murdered leaving the others to wonder who in the house did it. In One Little Secret, three couples from the same neighborhood decide to share a vacation home in the Hamptons for the week while their kids are away at summer camp. More then one little secret starts to come out as we learn about each couple- it definitely is like a soap opera or Desperate Housewives. It seems like everyone is cheating or lying. There wasn't really any characters you could like or want to believe. It was fun however to play along guessing who could've killed her as more and more comes out. Its an easy, quick read perfect for a summer vacation when you just want something fun.
Cate Holahan has given us another great thriller with One Little Secret.
"Three families, all neighbors, share a house in the Hamptons for a week. One of the wives takes a late night walk and is found dead on the beach the next morning. Was it someone in the house? Why would someone kill her?"
I could not stop reading this book. Holahan loads up a tremendous amount of conflict. There's infidelity, professional jealousy, domestic abuse, miscommunication and lawsuits. Throw in some alcohol and Holahan makes it feel like it might turn into a free-for-all..
Lots of unlikable characters, but that keeps the reader from knowing who did it. Holahan gives us clues, but you won't know for sure until the end.
This is a book you want to add to your summer thriller reading list. Publishes on July 9.
Absolutely fantastic had me gripped!!! Loved it! Can't wait for more from.this author. Storyline was great, characters were easy to.connect with
Thank you for the advanced copy
This book really did it for me! I literally could not put it down. I didn’t know I could read so fast .. this Author raised the stakes in the literary world. I was engaged from start to finish and had the biggest book hangover after it ended. Three couples rent a house on the beach for a week thinking there would be relaxing and having fun while being child free due to them all being at summer camp..what they didn’t know was that things were not going to go quite that way and in fact took a turn for the worst. Everyone has a secret I mean everyone... this book had a fast pace to it. I couldn’t flip those pages fast enough. There was so much going on in this book that one could not possibly get bored. My only suggestion would be to make sure the house is clean and the dinner is on simmer because once you open this book you won’t want to move. This Author did a great job and I look forward to reading other books by her.. Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this advance readers copy in exchange for my honest opinion. I definitely recommend this book.
One Little Secret was my first Cate Holahan novel. I was drawn to this book by both the plot and the intriguing cover.
Three couples rent a beach house, naturally one of them ends up dead. Who wouldn't want to pick up this book? Lots of twists and turns have these couples interconnected in more ways than you could have ever dreamed. The story moves quickly and there are so many sub-stories going on, you won't be able to put it down.
Really enjoyed this fast paced thriller - a great summer or beach read!
When their kids go off to summer camp, three couples who reside in the same neighborhood, take a trip together to the Hamptons, renting a house right along the beach. On the first night there, drama ensues—arguing, lies, and even murder.
The next morning, police are called to the beach, as a dead body has been found—one of our vacationing neighbors. What happened to this woman? And which one of these neighbors is responsible for her death?
Detective Gabby Watkins is on the case and she refuses to give up until she uncovers the truth.
A gripping mystery full of an unlikable cast of character. No one seems innocent—each and every one of them has a motive to kill, but who actually followed through with it?
One Little Secret by Cate Holahan is a twisty mystery that centers around one of my favorite thriller tropes—the “no escape" mystery with a set number of suspects. This was my first time reading one of Cate Holahan’s books and I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced mystery. This reminded me a lot of Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty—several couples with big secrets that ends in murder. While I wasn’t a huge fan of Gabby and her investigative style, I really loved the dual timelines where we see both the night of the murder, and the days afterward where Gabby connects the dots. I definitely will be reading more by this author in the future. 4/5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books and Cate Holahan for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley, Cate Holahan and Crooked Lane Books for the Arc of one little secret. I listed to her first book lies she told on audible at work last year and very much enjoyed it so was excited to see she had a new book coming out. The cover had me hooked even before I read about it and the plot didn't disappoint either.
Basically Susan, her husband and their new neighbors all take a getaway and stay at this beautiful glass beach house. On the first night they all start drinking and picking up on everyone's tensions whether it be home life or work life. Someone speaks to much and the next morning one of the ladies is discovered dead on the beach. Detective Gabby Watkins enters the scene and must figure out which one of them did it. It's easier said then done because each person has secrets and their own reasons fo doing it.
This book takes place over the course of the days starting with the day before, the day of the killing and finally the next day. This book was written really well in my opinion and kept me guessing and wondering who did it. Another hit from Cate!
This story was so unremarkable I'll likely not think of the characters, who were thin, sad creatures with no depth and less substance, for a moment beyond this one.
When a group of neighborhood couples go on vacation and one winds up dead, what unfolds nexts has so many twists and turns you won't be able to put this book down until you reach the end.
Three couples rent a house in the Hamptons to spend their vacation together. They are all neighbors and their kids are off to summer camp. It seems that they don’t know each other very well or even like each other and I wondered why they want to spend their holiday together. But it seems that there is much more going on underneath. Some of them are more connected to one another and have some kind of issues. And indeed on their first evening one of the couples begins to fight out of the blue. The next morning one of them is dead.
The story is told from the day of (the murder) and the day after at first. In the framework plot we see detective Gabby Watkins handling the investigation. There is a lot going on in this book and quite a few issues are raised. All of the six neighbors are unappealing characters. All the men are hot and their wives adore them. They are of course, too, beautiful and have or had fantastic jobs. But two of the men are plain a***holes and all the women are bitches. A big thing in this book is adultery and I was annoyed how the women concentrated their anger on the other woman and not on their husbands. Maybe it was the point of the whole book to show how quick we are to blame women more than men. All three women are described as strong. But in the end they all just want to have their husbands home and caring for them. I can see the point the author was making but it felt flat for me. I just despised all of them for being so selfish and quick with their accusations. I in generally have no problem with unlikable characters but here I really was too annoyed with them.
The book is not too long so it is a quick read. But six revolting characters are a bit much to handle. Even Detective Gabby is problematic because she seems not very competent. This book was just not for me. It annoyed me more than it entertained me.
When I first started this book, I was a bit confused by the characters. There were so many and it kept bouncing back and forth which was confusing at times. However, as the book progressed, I truly enjoyed the storyline. I would highly recommend this book!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
When I first started reading Our Little Secret, I got a tiny bit confused about the characters. The narrator, Susan, was a high-powered lawyer turned stay-at-home mom. Rachel is a lawyer and Jenny is a doctor. And the latter too are beautiful. Although I got the feeling that Susan probably was too, it’s just that she didn’t see herself that way, so far removed from her former self.
I get that. I also get that unfortunately, many women of a certain age these days tend to look like they have it all on the outside–beauty, money, success and of course they are all also amazing mothers and wives. Of course, that’s just what we get from social media. Sometimes I find the prettier the picture that is painted, the greater possibility that underneath the veneer it’s a big old mess. But I felt like what I got of these women was more surface. I would have liked to see some different qualities because I had a hard time keeping track of them just with different names.
But I digress. The more I got into Our Little Secret, the more interesting it got. Because it isn’t just one little secret. Or maybe it started out that way, but it’s snowballed. And the whole book takes place during 24 hours on what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway. Well, not everyone returns home.
Our Little Secret was a quick read, good for when you don’t have the time to really chew on a book. It’s domestic suspense and I would recommend to fans of Jessica Strawser and David Bell.
Special thanks to Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley for an egalley in exchange for my honest review. This review will be published on my blog on June 29, 2019.
Within 24 hours of receiving a galley of Cate Holahan's thriller ONE LITTLE SECRET, I finished the book and published a review. If that's not the definition of a "page-turner," I don't know what is!
While the novel's beginning overwhelms with a robust cast of characters, the narrative quickly comes into focus as individual characters are fleshed out and their entanglements and conflicts are brought into full relief. Each chapter ending propelled me into the next in a voracious search for the truth. But, as readers learn throughout this journey, truth is complicated: an infinite spectrum, shades of gray.
The beauty of ONE LITTLE SECRET lies not in its ability to dangle readers on the hook or in its suspenseful rendering of "real-life" scenarios, although it achieves both seamlessly. No, the novel's pinnacle achievement is in the crafting and representation of relatable individuals: ones who have indisputable redeeming qualities despite their obvious flaws. This duplicity of human nature, and the exploration how far one will go to protect family and self, make for a captivating, quality read.
I really loved this book thrillers our some of my favorite kind of books to read and I hit the jackpot! I will also say that I enjoyed the authors writing style some books that have more than one point of view can get confusing or annoying I defiantly didn't feel like that with this book it was easy to go from one point of view to another. the fact that these neighbors really thought that a simple and supposed to be relaxing get away takes such a horrid turn is what kept me dying to find out what happens in the end and yes I was surprised! I also did like hearing from the detectives point of view and not just the couples it showed a lot of insight. The cover is very eye-catching with I love and especially since it fits so well with the book! I highly recommend this book for anyone itching for a good thriller!

It's "Fun Time", send the kids to camp and the parents to a lovely glass beach house! Those were the plans and what better way to get to know your neighbors? However, there are some things you would rather not know about your neighbors! When one of the house guests is murdered, it becomes the task of the local police detective to solve the case.
While I enjoyed the book, there seemed to be too many coincidences. For example, the neighbors were not just friends but also tied together by business. And, everyone had marital issues! The local detective was good at her job, but also personally involved in the case.
Again, I enjoyed the book for what it is - a quick summer read. I look forward to reading more by Cate Holahan.
As much as I wanted to LOVE this book- I couldn’t. I did not finish the book. It fell flat from the beginning and never picked up momentum. The synopsis sounded great, unfortunately I just could not stick it out to find out the whole story.
Highly recommend this book! It starts with a murder, and throughout the entire book we follow the group of friends, as well as the detective on the case, to figure out not only who was the murderer but the reason for the murder. Each person in this group has their own secrets and motives and it was very entertaining to follow the characters through this novel. I loved the format of the 3 days (day before, day of, and day after) and the fact that the author alternated through those days as well as alternating through the characters different stories, as we gathered bits of information in the search for the killer.
Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for the early read of One Little Secret in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own.
I am going to be participating in the blog tour on July 26th, so I will start by saying that is when the blog post is going up, I will email the link and also post it here!
So onwards: Her One Mistake by Cate Holahan is the perfect summer read. Three couples rent a beach house in the Hamptoms while their kids are off at camp, hoping for a quiet vacation getaway. Good idea, right? When tensions go through the glass ceiling and one of the wives ends up murdered, it turns into ...quite the clusterf*ck.
This isn't a particularly difficult read, although I had trouble keeping all the names apart at first. The chapters alternate between the day before, the day of, and the day after the crime... This makes sense as it reveals bits and pieces of the before and after and lets us guess at what happened. I took the obvious suspect and guessed wrong, darn it. I liked the fast pacing and was about to read this in two days, finding Jenny's line to be the most interesting. The detective was a little annoying and I felt like she didn't really back Jenny up, despite the terrible situation she was in.
So what I really liked was that there was a lot of tension between...everyone...and even though the action was contained to one area like a Clue game, there is still a feeling of danger to one character that I felt kept the plot moving. These are rather rich couples but the dialogue felt right, at least for the medical aspects. I know how doctors (and nurses) tend to either draft towards or away from medical conversations, and it was funny listening to Louis boast. I would have liked to spend more time inside the murder victim's head, instead of seeing her through the other's eyes only. Either way, this was an absorbing and quick read and I easily rate it 4*. Recommend to all fana of the genre!
Content warnings for alleged rape, spousal abuse, and drowning.
***disclaimer: this is not going to be my final review but I wanted to get my initial thoughts out! Thank you again for the opportunity to read the book and feature it next month***
This was definitely an interesting book. I was interested by the blurb and it's definitely didn't disappoint. Some of the characters I liked and some I didn't. I did like the premise of the story because it did remind me of Big Little Lies. Pretty interesting and really well written.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As a huge fan of Cate Holahan's previous novel: Lies She Told, I was so excited to request this title from NetGalley, and am extremely thankful for the opportunity to read and review this story.
Sadly, this one fell a little flat for me, pretty much from the very beginning. The murder happens immediately, but you don't immediately know who is killed. At first this piqued my interest... after this short, intense moment dedicated to the murder the story begins following a female detective that is following up on a completely unrelated case to the murder - OK, not really expecting to jump back there yet - however this entire angle feels completely detached from the story especially when in the following chapter...BAM SO many different people are introduced that I really had a hard time remembering who was married to who, etc. I would have benefited from a chart, actually.
However, after hanging in there and reading for nearly the entire story things start to get more and more interesting, and I was finally able to seamlessly remember who was who. The story line started to become clear and tie together, and it was quite interesting. If it weren't for the confusion in the beginning and the large sense of detachment I felt, I think I really would have enjoyed this story based on the plot alone.
This was a 2.5 Star read for me.If you loved the writing style of The Perfect Mother by Aimee Malloy, you probably will love this one too.
