William Kidd left Australia ten years ago, he’s traveled the world and he’s a merchant seaman. He left because his father Jack committing a terrible crime, his father was hanged for murder and he’s not seen his stepmother Elizabeth since.
His ship arrives in Liverpool, he meets Hannah Dawson, her father’s extremely religious and he’s crazy. He’s a bully, he hits his wife Sarah, Hannah and her sister younger Judith. Hannah works for her father, he’s owns the Morton Coffee Company and it’s struggling financially. Hannah looks just like Will’s stepmother Elizabeth, and they discover she’s Hannah’s aunt and her mother’s long lost sister. She left England fifteen years ago, she disappeared and Sarah had no idea her sister was living in Australia.
Hannah’s informed by her father he’s arranged for her to marry Samuel Henderson, his father's the minster of the church her father attends, and it’s a marriage of convenience. Will’s devastated when he finds out Hannah was forced to marry someone else, he leaves Liverpool on a ship bound for Africa, and when he returns months later, and he’s shocked to discover Hannah isn’t legally married to Sam. Hannah and Judith are finally free from their father and his violence. I received a copy of Storms Gather Between Us from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, Clare Flynn never disappoints and four stars from me.
I very much enjoyed this book - it kept me enthralled for the past two days. It is a story of love and loss, courage and compliance. Excellent and amazing story.
For lovers of Sagas this is the book for you.I was drawn into the stories the characters their lives.A book with drama emotion and love. Highly recommend.#netgalley#canelo
I was given a copy of Clare Flynn's book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have read several of Clare's books before and always enjoyed them so was looking forward to reading this one. It didn't disappoint, Clare has a great talent for writing. What I didn't realize is it's a follow on from 'a greater world' but can be read as a stand alone book.
The book is about Will and Hannah who meet one day, not realising the family connection. Will spends most of his time at sea since moving to Liverpool from Australia. Hannah lives with her father who has very strong religious views.
It's a classic story of love set on pre war Britain which is a great read. I'm hoping Clare will write a follow up book.
In places this story is very dark with domestic violence as it's background.
On the other hand, the romance and friendships lightens the whole story.
Overall a well written enjoyable story.
This was a very sad story but with a happy ending. Set in the days when women were considered to be mere chattels and given no rights whatsoever, it gives a harsh background to the story. Long live emancipation, glad I didn't live in those times.
This is a very easy book to read, and is enjoyable. It's set just before WWII and is the story of Will, an Australian fleeing from his family's past (and the fact he has been spurned in love) by serving on on merchant ships. When he eventually ends up in Liverpool, he meets and falls in love with Hannah who is the child of an autocratic father and has no life of her own. In Hannah's life there is a link to Will's family and after much unhappiness, cruelty and upset they manage to overcome adversity and finally, get to start to make a life of their own. I found this book to be very reminiscent of the Catherine Cookson books I used to read many years ago, which I personally would describe as sagas, rather than historical fiction.
This is the first time I have read anything from this author and I throughly enjoyed it. Nice easy read. Thank you Canelo and Netgalley for giving me the chance to read this book
Hannah lives in Liverpool with her mother, sister and religious zealot of a Father, always under his watchful eye and scared to do anything to anger him.
Will is in the merchant Navy running from the ghosts of his life in Australia.
One day Hannah and Will meet and have an instant attraction to one another, knowing Hannah’s father would never let them marry the make plans to run away together, unfortunately it is too late and Hannah is forced into an arranged marriage to Sam, a good and kind man, but he doesn’t want to be married to Hannah
A lovely book which pulls at your heartstrings.
I've just finished this and absolutely loved it, loved it.
When I started reading, I hadn't realise that this was Will's story. I had read the first one where Elizabeth went to Australia but didn't know that this followed on.. I was so pleased as I like to know what happens next.
My heart was in my mouth for Hannah, Sarah and Judith when at home with the father. What a brute he was! !I just wish he'd got his comeuppance earlier!
I'm hoping that there will a sequel. What happens next, do they get to Oz, does Will go in the Army, war? Oh my, so many questions.
I very much enjoyed this book by Clare Flynn. How i love a good saga and the picture on the front cover alone would have had me picking up this book. A wonderful story and one in which i can recommend. I hope to read more by this author.
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review, freely given.
An excellent and really gripping pre-WWII story! Great read!!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
Great read. The author wrote a story that was interesting and moved at a pace that kept me engaged. The characters were easy to invest in.
Another great book by Clare Flynn. We meet characters from a previous story, but it can be read as a stand alone.
Three women live with their strict, bible obsessed, abusive husband/dad in Liverpool.
Will Kidd sails the Seven seas, leaving behind his bad memories of life in Australia.
Will's ship docks in Liverpool and a chance meeting between Hannah & Will brings the past to the present.
Can there be a stop to lives being destroyed? Will the lies continue?
Can love conquer all?
Very descriptive, immersive and well written. This book is guaranteed to make you turn each and every page.
Since escaping his family's notoriety in Australia, Will has spent a decade sailing the seas. Content to live the life of a wanderer, everything changes in a single moment when he comes face to face with a ghost from the past on a beach in Liverpool.
What a well written book this is. Not always an easy topic to write about, brutal parents, husbands/fathers who must be obeyed, thank goodness times have changed for the better. Hannah, her sister and mother live in fear of their father. Will Kidd has left the Austrialian shores, sailing the seas. Their chance meeting in Liverpool, Will knew Hannah's aunt, brings a lot of memories to the fore. A great cast of characters and a good old fashioned storyline made this a great read.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Canelo and the author Clare Flynn for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This actually is a pretty compelling saga. Hannah and Will should not have met- he's a sailor and she's the daughter of an abusive religious man. Will knew Hannah's aunt and, in traveling to Liverpool, he never expected that he would fall in love with Hannah. These two set off on an adventure in life, with love powering them through. It's also an interesting look at life just before WWII. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Storms gather between us
This is the story of two people who are destined to meet despite there being no obvious link between them. The story starts in 1938.Will Kidd is an Australian merchant sailor who we first meet in Zanzibar. Will has a troubled past that comes back to haunt him. Hannah Dawson lives in Liverpool with a religious zealot for a father who controls the family. Hovering in the background Nazi Germany is growing and war clouds are growing.
The link between the two comes from her father’s coffee importers company that he has run into the ground. Will had been in love with his father’s wife who just happens to be Hannah’s long lost aunt. When Will and Hannah meet the two of them finally meet they fall in love with eachother.
The worst part of this story is the treatment women had to endure from violent men even as late as the 1930’s.At least the looming war would give them more freedom,Hannah's father is an evil man but he finally gets the punishment he deserves..
I hope that there is a sequel to this excellently told story. I hope that Will and Hannah get their happy ever after in Australia.
The first book that I have read by Clare Flynn now I'm on the search for her other books. Hannah is so relatable she is the dutiful daughter, but she's also an adult. Written pre WW II when women many times were still "property" and throw in extremist religous beliefs and an overbearing father controlling the 3 women characters with no help in sight. You hope for the women at least peace and happiness, but a chance at true love seems to much to wish for until Will Kidd comes along, can he save the day? Can Hannah escape the control of her father, arranged marriage,Hitler? Must read to find out.
Alongside a conventional "boy meets girl but they cant be together" love story, this is a story of love, loss, courage, hope, yet with an underlying darkness as it touches on domestic violence, abuse, bullying and religious bigotry.
Hannah & her sister Judith live with their mother & their abusive but religiously obsessed father in Liverpool. The family business is failing and the future looks bleak for Hannah
Will is a sailor, escaping bad memories & a difficult family in Australia.
When Hannah & Will meet, both their lives are turned upside down - family secrets are exposed, and love is tested.
The book concludes as war breaks out in 1939 & leaves so many unanswered questions! There is definitely another story waiting to be told, the wartime story of Hannah & Will and of course Judith.
Disclosure: I received this book free from NetGalley for review, but all opinions are my own.
