I LOVED this book. I really enjoyed Small Spaces, but this one was even better. I'm always down for a snowed-in mystery/horror story. This time the gang is snowed in at a ski-lodge with some not so nice spirts. I've know read the entire quartet, and this one was my favorite book in the series.
Ollie, Brian, and Coco are headed to a new ski resort, Mount Hemlock Resort, which is housed in a location that used to be an orphanage by Mother Hemlock. As it turns out, Mother Hemlock was not a nice person, the three are soon hearing voices of children and the ghost of a scary woman telling them to go to bed. One of the voices is begging the group to find her bones, the ghost can only leave if the kids find her bones. Things really take a supernatural twist from there.
Soon the adults are lost in a deep sleep and the kids are faced with trying to save the ghosts, who seem to be frozen in sleep for all time- or until someone finds their bones.
I was unaware this is book two of the series. I realized as I was reading, there had to be a previous book, but this book could be a stand alone. I will be going back and reading book one, Small Spaces, and hope there will be more. I really enjoyed getting to know Ollie, Brian, and Coco!
I was given the opportunity to read this book by NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
Obviously this is different than the Winternight series but still very good. A middle grade series that will make all the tweens happy. I’m not usually a MG reader but I tried it and liked it.
The sequel to Small Spaces was just as creepy and shiver-inducing as the first book. Readers will rush to grab this one to see what the Smiling Man is up to next! This series is a great choice for reluctant readers as it will grab them in the first book and keep them engaged for several more.
A great middle grade horror series. Arden is gifted at crafting this genre appropriately for a middle grade audience.
After escaping the Smiling Man in "Small Spaces," Coco, Ollie and Brian are together again, this time heading for a small vacation at a newly renovated ski lodge. On the way, they encounter a major snow storm. After making it to the lodge without injury, they find that the rest of the visitors have cancelled their reservations, so it is just the kids and Ollie's dad and Coco's mom and the resort owners. Almost immediately, mysterious things begin to happen. The taxidermy animals in the lobby move and the kids begin to think they see ghosts from the orphanage which was what the lodge was before being renovated. Another lodge visitor somehow makes it through the snow storm and more disturbances begin happening: the electricity goes out, the fire will not stay lit and the children begin to see more ghosts.
The kids beat the Smiling Man in "Small Spaces," but he is back and determined to draw them to the supernatural side and keep them this time. This is a chilling and very creepy ghost story for kids who like Mary Downing Hahn or Lindsey Currie's books. Although the storyline of "Small Spaces" is referenced often, it is not necessary to read it in order to follow and understand the events in this book. Good recommendation for upper elementary/middle school age kids looking for scary stories.
I selected this book because I had read the first in the series and loved it. This one did not disappoint. While not truly horror, the author does live up to being a master at creating atmosphere. Her descriptions make me shiver. - what more would one want in a book of this type? These three best friends work together to again save themselves and those around them. A great read for kids and adults alike!
I read Small Spaces before this book, and Ollie, Coco, and Brian have to deal with ghosts again, this time at a ski lodge they were going to as a fun trip away. Ollie’s dad wins a free trip to a ski lodge and invites Coco, Coco’s mom, and Brian along. The weather is terrible on their way, and Coco swears she sees a person in the middle of the road with a blue ski jacket on. When they get to the resort, there is no power, and it has an eerie feeling. Ollie has nightmares that night, and then a strange reporter shows up the next day. Ollie, Coco, and Brian end up having a very different trip than they expected.
Fun and engaging. Perfect for students who like horror but don't want to be too scared. Characters were endearing and fun to follow.
I want to thank Penguin Random House and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I am late in reviewing this book due to a downloading issue. Small Spaces was one of my favorite scary stories of late. This next book in the series is equally as scary- to me scarier. I enjoyed Small Spaces a bit more because of the setting- creepy scarecrows were terrific characters and unique. This book was a bit more "old school" scary with a setting in a former orphanage turned ski lodge that is haunted with ghosts. The Smiling Man returns with very sinister intentions. This story takes place a couple months after Small Spaces. If you have not read Small Spaces- read it first as this book references the events in that story and would give you spoilers. I liked how the characters really work as a team, believe in each other- enough to put their lives on the line for each other, and never give up. I think the team work and strong relationships between these friends is the strength of the this story. Coco is more of a focus in this book, so I am wondering in her next book if Brian might be highlighted more. I rate this book lower than Small Spaces since it has more a traditional setting, characters and problems. It was not as unique as Small Space, but plenty scary. I did not really like the use of a ouija board, but that is just me. Parents should be aware of its use in this story. I wish the author had thought of a more original idea for communication- I love the watch in the story. If you have students that thrive on chills and thrills- this is a series to point them toward.
The second book in a series, Dead Voices brings back Ollie, Coco, and Brian.
Every book is slightly different, dead voices brings us to an eerily winter themed book. This book also brings us Ollies and Coco's POV. Which makes it a little different then the first book as well. Arden has done a fantastic job of writing a story that is unbelievably fast paced and wonderfully spooky!
Set yourself down to read because you won't be putting it down for awhile! Perfect light horror book which will thrill young readers who want a good scare!
Ollie, Coco, and Brian are back, and after their previous adventure what they really need is a vacation. Luckily, they have a skiing trip to Mount Hemlock Resort that almost seems to fall into their laps. Foul weather and snow almost makes them miss the trip, and once they arrive it creates all sorts of problems for them. When a mysterious ghost hunter arrives, it seems like their relaxing vacation may be another time of terror.
Dead Voices is a great follow up to Small Spaces, and if you're looking for a scary, thrilling ghost story, check it out. This is sure to please people who love a safe, scary ride!
Arden does it again! I love the premise for this series which is a novel for each season of the year. The book revisits the same characters from the first book and includes more very creepy elements (much like her first book with the scarecrows). I love Arden's books for adults, but I also love that she's written books for young adults that I can recommend to students. My seventh grade daughter also really enjoys this series and loved Dead Voices as much as the first book.
Dead Voices is a delightfully scary follow up to Small Spaces that leaves room for another book in the series. Like it's predecessor, Dead Voices is fantastic at setting up a spooky, atmospheric story that is just scary enough for older elementary and middle school aged readers.
I liked this one a little bit more than the first book but it still took a while to get into it. It's not a bad story. It just isn't hooking me.
Great spooky novel for adolescents. Going back to read Small Spaces, which I probably should have read before this one.
This was SO much creepier than the first one. If you know a kid that likes scary stories, I highly recommend this one. It's scary without being gory or bloody. It definitely helps to have read the first one so you understand why the watch is important.
I'm really glad I know about this series, because I can't wait to recommend it to kids! It's spooky, it's got a lot of friendship and heart and the kids using their smarts to defeat evil.
When I recieved this book I got and read the first book in the series, and this is a great follow-up to Small Spaces. Both books are legitimately spooky middle grade horror novels, with ghosts and actually frightening circumstances that tie in to the events and experiences the main characters are dealing with in their non-spooky everyday lives. I hope the series continues!
