It's hard to review a single short chapter, but Best Friends seems to continue with the same quality of storytelling and illustration as Real Friends, so I'm happy.
Hale is back with a sequel that's sure to be a popular selection in my Media Center.
Her examination of friendship and all that it entails is an important one. The sixth grade experience is a difficult one with wanting to be in the "In Crowd" but having to confront the issues that arise from that yearning.
The decisions the character has to deal with and how she handles them is certain to resonate with her readers in this book.
This was just an 18 page sampler of the graphic novel so I'm not going to post a review on social media since it was so short. It seems like it is a great continuation of Real Friends and through Shannon Hale's experiences will further explore themes of popularity, insecurity, and friendship. Those things that are timeless and important for middle grade readers, and kids now will totally relate to it even if some of the pop culture mentions will be foreign. Definitely purchasing multiple copies for our libraries.
The trial chapter was far too short to allow much of an assessment of this book. The set up was somewhat uninspiring but Shannon Hale's work is usually pretty good.
Friends is the most checked out book in school the library. This preview looks as promising to be as well loved.
This chapter sampler shows that Shannon Hale does an excellent job portraying the ups and downs of school friendships. I’m looking forward to reading all of Best Friends. It will be a fantastic addition to any library and a vital book for readers who are attempting to figure out changing social rules.
Shannon Hale continues to shine with her follow-up to Real Friends. The illustrations in this graphic novel will delight and engage older elementary and middle-grade readers as they continue to adventure through Shannon's rocky road of middle school friendships. Just when Shannon believes she has securely made it into the popular crowd, her loyalties, confidence, and good nature are tested. Don't hesitate to continue this series.
I would expect nothing less than perfection from Hale in the Friends sequel. I can tell from the chapter sneak peek that Best Friends is going to take us back to middle school with all the challenges being laid out in front of us. I wish there were more to preview!
