This is a fast paced story that picks up a few months after the last novel. I really enjoy the illustrations and the storyline. I can't wait until the next book.
After adventures on the Moon, Hans, Sophie, and Seraphin are hiding out at a remote Breton village while Seraphin's father went to England to set up a scholarly society for the exploration space. But the Prussians will not be denied, so a kidnapping is arranged along with a trip to Mars. After the Prussians came calling, the trio took off for Mars with the former Chamberlain of Bavaria as a guide. Unknowingly, there was also a stowaway that changed their plans at the last moment. Looking forward to the next installment!
A wonderful graphic novel full of steampunk and fantasy! Like the french writer Jules Verne, Alex Alice mixes science and magic to create a world of awe and wonder. The plot keeps you to the end, and the illustrations are simply beautiful.
The third adventure in the Castle in the Stars series is just as entertaining as the previous parts.
The race to control Mars is on. Seraphin, Sophie and Hans, together with Seraphin's grandfather, are doing their best to keep aertherite a secret; but are also drawn into the competition between Britain and Prussia to control Mars.
Unfortunately, this book ends in a major cliffhanger. Can't wait for the next part of the story.
It was an nice adventure story. Watercolor artwork and lots of panels were enjoyable. It kept my interest throughout the book. My high school students would read this.

The race to the planets is on. Seraphin, Sophie, Hans, and Seraphin’s Grandfather are hiding out trying to keep aertherite a secret while they probe its secrets. Meanwhile, Seraphin’s father is conscripted by the Prussians for a trip to Mars, and soon others will be on their way there as well. It is a race for control of Mars.
A little colonial-ish period competition reimaged as spread to the reaches of space with imaginative steampunk apparatuses to get them there. This volume in our heroes’ adventures has to pack in a bit about what’s going on with other interested parties, so we don’t spend quite as much time with the 3 kids. What we do spend with them, though, is entertaining. I felt like this book more than any other in the series ended in quite the cliffhanger. I really want to know what happens next! Hand this series to kids and teens who like space adventures, steampunk, reimagined histories, and graphic novels.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
As always, such beautiful artwork! And again, a cliff-hanger ending. I appreciate the historic and scientific detail that goes into this series. For the longest time I thought Hans was a short adult (probably because of his beer and smoking habits), but in this third book in the series, Hans was a little more believable as a kid (there was one spread in particular that made it more clear, maybe there was a slight change in his design graphically?). Looking forward to the next book!
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC!
Another great installment in the series! More gorgeous art and a continually captivating plot! Also, another cliff hanger that leaves you begging for more!
"Castle in the Stars: The Knights of Mars" is a fun graphic novel. The artwork is beautiful and the story is a lot of fun.
I love this series so, so much - it combines my love for many things: 19th century German and European history, steampunk, space exploration....seriously, what's not to love? Seraphin and his gang go to Mars! My only complaint is that this volume is far too short, and the wait for the next volume, A Frenchman on Mars, will be far too long.
Need more now please!
Castle in the Stars is a perfect fit for fans of Studio Ghibli films; it is almost exactly like watching so many of their movies. I love that JLG has this series and we will automatically be getting it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I was able to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Knights of Mars picks up shortly after book 2. Our intrepid travelers having returned from the moon set their sights on Mars to find both the King and Seraphin’s father who went missing after a meeting and is believed to have been taken captive. Sophie, Hans and Seraphin brave space travel again to find the answers they seek.
I love the art of this story and the steampunk aesthetic. Sophie and Seraphin are by far my favorite characters but Hans grows on me a bit more each time I read another volume of this series.
