I have been waiting for this ever since the epic end of Might Jack #2! And this cross over with my other fav, Zita, does not disappoint. Earth itself is in danger from the Giants, so Jack and Zita and all of our favorite characters from each series team up to try to save the world! My only complaint was I felt it was too fast paced - some things I feel got glossed over and weren't adequately explained in the hurry to move the plot along and I almost think this could have gone as two volumes if those things could have been given the time. I loved the ending - no cliffhanger, it was a lovely wrap up to two series, but left it open for more in the future and I do hope Ben Hatke keeps writing these characters! :-)
This is another great installment of The Mighty Jack graphic novel series. Readers will enjoy the illustrations and the fast-paced plot in this fantasy that wraps up Jack's journey. Don't fret. The ending has promise of new adventures to come. Readers will also enjoy the crossover of characters from Zita the Spacegirl. Another strong story from the author, Ben Hatke.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title.
As a big fan of Jack and Zita already, of COURSE I was primed to love this title.
Hatke's art never fails to blow me away. His style is so unique and perfectly suited to the fantasy worlds he creates. The colors and light in the book are well done and strongly work together to tell the story.
As a story, this one felt quickly wrapped up, but I think that's because I'm used to his 2 or 3 book arcs. I was impressed that even though there were so many characters in this mash-up, it remained easy to follow which increases my confidence in handing this to younger readers.
Overall, another great graphic novel by Hatke (to no one's surprise)
My son and husband and I adore Jack and Zita and were so very excited to read this book. It lived up to our expectations. My 6.5 year old says it has good art and the story is good. I thought it was a clever way to tie up loose ends, reintroduce all the characters from both series, and bring them through one big satisfying adventure. We can’t wait to read more by Hatke in the future- there is lots of room for potential exploration in new books following this one.
Five stars!
Ben Hatke arranges a meeting of two of his well-known characteres, Mighty Jack and Zita the Spacegirl. This is a story that takes the reader from daily suburban life up the beanstalk to a land of giants, dragons, and other mythical creatures.
Of critical note here is Hatke's art and plotting. The characters in this book are cartoonish but realistic. It's a style that is visually engaging and a welcome sight for the reader. Mighty Jack and Zita the Spacegirl is yet another fine book from Hatke and another example of a strong graphic novel from publisher First Second.
As a former middle school teacher, I would gladly share this book with middle grades students, as well as readers who are younger and older. As a teacher educator, I heartily recommend Hatke's work (as well as many titles from First Second).
This book is worth the trip and readers young and old will love it.
For fans of Ben Hatke's two graphic novel series, Zita the Spacegirl and Mighty Jack, the second Mighty Jack graphic novel left us with a mighty cliffhanger that had us clamoring for more. This newest graphic novel is the fulfillment of that promise and a return to the spectacular worlds we have come to love, and an advancement of the relationships between many characters.
The first few pages provide a short recap of the action in each of the series, and then the new action continues with a formidable enemy in place and advancing on our very own Earth. Throughout the story, character learn that they need to come together like never before, in ways they did not feel possible in order to have any chance to save our planet.
This is a really great addition to the series. 4.5 stars!
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read the ARC. I was so excited to read a Zita and Jack crossover! I did enjoy the story and I know lots of kids will love it, but I was a little bit disappointed, Its a bit difficult to put my finger on why, but I think in uniting the two stories the plot felt a bit contrived. This did not take away from my enjoyment in seeing the two cast of characters interact, and I loved Hatke's illustrations as ever. I will definitely buy this for my library and recommend it to children regardless.
Review to be posted Aug 20, 2019 on GoodReads:
A little time has passed since Jack, Lilly, and Maddy had their adventures overthrowing the ogre king, and Zita & Joseph, Madrigal & Piper have been back on Earth for a while since their adventures in space. Regular life is a little hard after you’d adventured elsewhere. When giants threaten to break the door between the inbetween and invade Earth, Jack, Lilly, Maddy, Zita, Joseph, and the rest of the gang have to find a way to stop the invasion and save Earth.
It was so nice to be adventuring with Jack, Lilly, Zita, Joseph, and gang again. They manage to visit places and see creatures on their adventure trying to stop the invasion that harken back to both of their past series of adventures. I like that they have to work out how to work together. It seems very natural when you’ve been two separate teams that it would take a little work to get into a flow with more people and for everyone to find how they fit in. Hatke’s illustrations are amazing as always. He’s added a little bit of a touch of Norse mythology into this story, while also having shades of various Jack & giant fairy tales. Not that it feels like a rewrite of someone else’s story. This is all Hatke’s own. And I like that the characters work to make every effort to solve things peacefully. There’s enough opening at the end that it looks like Jack and Zita and friends could have more adventures either together or separate. And I really hope there are more. Hatke’s books are so wonderful for both avid readers and getting reluctant readers reading, and they appeal to a wide age range. Highly recommended to just about any reader.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. Violence is threatened, but no fatalities and the worst injuries are suffered by a skeleton-like creature that seems able to regenerate.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Mighty Jack and Zita the Spacegirl is a great way to combine the 2 stories. I will use this as a way to introduce both of the graphic novel series to my students. Well done!
There are series that you read and feel really satisfied with in the end. Zita Space Girl by Ben Hatke was one of those trilogies. Then Ben publishes a new series, Mighty Jack, and <spoiler> he manages to bring these two stories together in book #2</spoiler>! Book three continues this epic journey, and I can think of no better way to start a school year than to show kids the third book in the Mighty Jack series that also continues the Zita Space Girl series! Talk about building excitement for reading. The nostalgia of returning to something that you loved and finding something new!? If you are an elementary or middle school teacher/librarian, you need these two series in your school!
I have been a fan of Ben Hatke since the first Zita book released and as soon as I read the first Mighty Jack book, I wrote to Ben and asked him if these two dynamic characters could please meet on the page. To my delight, he assured me this was in the works. This highly anticipated dynamic duo have come together for the first time and the epic adventures ahead seem infinite. Start at the beginning with both of these series before meeting them together!
Fun crossover between two of my favorite comic characters. Sure to be a hit with fans of both series, I would definitely recommend reading both the Zita series and the Mighty Jack series before reading this one as I feel it would take away from the experience. Hope to see more stories with these two characters, since this one set up a nice synergy for the characters.
Ben Hatke combines his the heroes from two series in this Mighty Jack and Zita mashup. As someone who was familiar with the Zita series but not familiar with the Mighty Jack series, this particular book was rather lackluster. Much of it was spent exploring a disagreement between characters from either series which was less than interesting when only one party was known to me as a reader.
Bringing these two characters together for one epic adventure is a wonderful idea, sure to appeal to fans of either series. Ben Hatke's writing is always fun, gripping, and full of imagination. You can tell the attention he pays to detail in the colour scheme and the way everything evokes emotion. Similar to Amulet, I often describe his books as "cinematic," an this book is especially so. The pacing and perspective of the panels make you feel like you're watching a movie. The epic D&D-style adventure of Mighty Jack and the zany sci-fi of Zita the Spacegirl merge together surprisingly well.
There are references to events that have happened in Zita's and Jack's series. However, readers who aren't yet familiar with Jack or Zita could jump in at this book, as their characters are reestablished near the start of the book.
