This book is so heartbreaking but but also lovely and touching at the same time, the characters will make you fall in love with them and destroy itself and you won’t want to stop reading. I love the cover of this book, it’s very simple but I think it lends a lot to the stories plot and enhances it a lot.

2.5 stars

Every Colour of You, by Amelia Mandeville, is a story of 2 people who are polar opposites. Tristan is depressed and struggling with dark thoughts while Zoe is a veritable rainbow, radiating positivity. She makes it her mission to befriend and help him.

I wish I loved this book like others did. I found Zoe hard to relate to. Her personality went beyond upbeat and was almost manic at times. Tristan was easier to relate to than Zoe, but I still struggled at times to do so. He was so lost, so separate. It was easier to sympathize with him than relate to him, I think.

In terms of writing, the style took some getting used to. It won’t be for everyone. I applaud Mandeville for taking on such serious subjects like mental illness and loss. For me, it was only partially successful. It was a raw and serious look at someone dealing with depression, so the story felt incredibly heavy for much of the book. Despite Zoe being so upbeat, she didn’t balance out Tristan’s darkness for me.

WOW. I had no idea what I was getting into. First suggestion: don't read the last quarter of this book in public. Huge thanks to Netgalley and Sphere for a free ARC copy of this to review.

Recommended: YEEEESSSSS
For those who know, love, or are someone who has dealt with grief, love, depression, identity, mental illness, passion, general happiness... basically that list is "everyone" so my recommendation is more or less to "everyone." A raw story, characters with secrets that are hinted at then revealed, a story that will make you feel terrible and lovely at the same time and renew the power of a smiley face. ☺

Be ready for a good cry (if you're a particular softie for this stuff) and some deep thoughts about life that end with gratitude.

Classroom book for sure. Enough that I'm inspired to create a new Goodreads shelf right now for it and add some of my others on the list of "books I definitely want available for my students."

Thoughts:
Wow, oh wow. I thought long and hard about whether this was really a 5-star book for me, but it feels IMPORTANT. Not only was this well written and a good read, it has a weight and a message carried in a palatable and realistic way for all people.

To start, let's address the end: Anything else would have been a let down; others may disagree. This is a "painful beauty" ending. I was not particularly surprised, but I chalk that up to how much YA I've read. It also just felt like the correct and most fitting ending.

The journey to the end is perfect. Our female MC, Zoe, reflects many of the thoughts I've had with my depressed and suicidal friends. Sometimes, she has no idea how to respond to Tree (calling him Tristan feels weird). Sometimes she says exactly the wrong thing, but to his mind it's exactly the right thing. Having both Zoe's and Tree's perspectives are useful no matter what side you might find yourself on. The love and hurt they trade between them is painfully realistic. The confusion they have about their own lives and towards each other inevitably serves to help them both understand and embrace who they are and want to be.

This story is complicated, in that I couldn't stop reading it but it also hurt to read at times. Let's be clear: this is very sad. Raw, when you have more personal connections to situations the characters are in. And yet, I feel like it's critical for people to have available.

I must be in the minority where this book is concerned. Tristan and Zoe’s story is definitely heartbreaking and unexpected, but I didn’t love it. I found the writing to drag at times, and the characters prattled on about nonsense that I didn’t find necessary to the story at hand.

Tristan is so lost and dark, and Zoe is so colorful and full of life. This is more of a friendship than a romance, although they do love each other. The story takes an unexpected turn, and makes you realize that you need to embrace every day.

Not bad for a debut; I think the author’s young age had much to do with the writing style and I am interested to see how she matures.

I recently finished “Every Colour of You” by Amelia Mandeville thanks to an advance readers copy that I was allowed to read. The following opinion is my own.

Let me start with this: I had a very hard time getting into this book. The formatting of the dialogue was strange and I am personally not not a fan of the first person present tense point of view. If you don’t mind first person present tense then ignore this comment.

As for the story itself, I was excited to see a book that dealt with mental health issues. But I just don’t think this particular book is my cup of tea. I kept waiting for the joy in this story. Our characters were going through something painful at every moment and I kept waiting for it to lead to a satisfying ending.

I hate to say it, but I don’t feel this story delivered that. While I understand the author’s intent, I just didn’t find that the ending justified the journey. Also the big twist happened very suddenly and the reader has very little time to adjust to it before the book ends.

This book definitely has potential and I think it is worth a read at least once, but it is not a story for my tastes. This is for someone who is a fan of tragic stories and painful journeys. There is an audience out there for that and if that’s you then I’m confident you’ll enjoy this book.

▪️MY THOUGHTS
✔️This book dealt with some heavy topics including depression, attempted suicide, alcoholism & death. I felt for all the characters but really loved Zoe. She was such a breathe of fresh air and such a positive influence on Tristan. The story was told from both character’s perspectives - so it allowed you to be in their head. The book felt very real and truly broke my heart at times.

This was a tough book for me to read, which is ironic because it was such an easy book to read. It's well-written, wonderfully paced, and the author's voice is addicting. But, it's really a very dark book despite its title and, for me, that darkness was almost a game changer.

It's easy to see what the book is about right from the start: living your best life. We meet Tristan who is literally walking out of the hospital after a 6 month stint on the psych ward. He's the first to tell you he's not better and that is clear as day. The chapters he narrates are dark and gloomy and rarely stray from that until the end. As someone who suffers from mental illness and can easily relate to Tristan, this was not fun to read.

Zoe is a bit of a badly disguised mystery. Her chapters are the literal opposite of Tristan's: happy and colorful and full of hope. Why she decides to make Tristan her friend isn't something that's clear, but I admit it was fascinating watching her try and break through his depression. That said, it was clear that something was wrong with Zoe and I spent a lot of time angry that Tristan was going to lose someone else that he loved.

The ending wasn't a surprise, but Tristan's road to recovery still felt rushed. The author says all the right things, but at that point, for me, it felt unfair with too much sadness.

I don’t know how this marvelous author managed to do this, but she created to deeply flawed characters with whom I immediately fell in love. Basically this is a love story, but as Tree says in the end, it’s more complicated than that. There is much here about the living of life, finding joy in life, while at the same time there is much here about depression, sadness, anxiety, and learning to live with that as well. The writing is smooth and easy, the dialogue entertaining, and the description made me feel like I was with the characters at all times.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I wasn't too sure about this one at the beginning. The characters grew on me as the story went on but I still didn't feel totally connected to them.
I liked how Zoe and Tristan really helped one another and grew within themselves while doing so. This is a sad but heartwarming story.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. I found the struggle that Tree went through for this period of time in his life to be sad. However, thankfully with the help of Zoe he overcame it. I didn’t expect the change of events with Zoe and that too was sad. Such a good book and I would recommend it to fellow readers.

This story was a very sweet one - and though it had aspects of romance, I did not feel as though those overtook the book (at least not in unnecessary ways!). This book felt realistic, and had a good amount of representation that felt natural (as it should) and not forced.

I enjoyed reading this book.
