THE LIAR’S HOUSE is the fourth crime thriller novel in the Detective Gina Harte Series, by author Carla Kovach. Having enjoyed the previous novels in the series, I move on to book 4. The story is set in a small fictional town in the English Midlands.
The 4 books in the series include:
The Next Girl (Book 1)
Her Final Hour (Book 2)
Her Pretty Bones (Book 3)
The Liar’s House (Book4)
Even though this novel worked well as a stand-alone, I would recommend other readers to read the previous books as they will be given background information on the characters in this book. A solid police procedural
Samantha stumbled out of the party and on to a busy street only ten minutes away from her home. But she never made it home…
Seven years after Samantha’s disappearance, her best friend Diane is shocked to find a letter addressed to Samantha on her doorstep. When Diane opens the envelope, she pulls out a birthday card and a finger nail painted in dusky pink nail polish. This is the same shade that Samantha always wore.
But when the police analyze the nail, they find it doesn’t belong to Samantha but to another woman, Jade Ashmore. And Jade was murdered the night before the envelope was delivered….
Now in book four Detective Gina Hart is investigating the murder of Jade Ashmore, a young woman who was attacked and killed in a residential street after attending a house party.
But seven years previously Samantha went missing in the same manner, and is still a missing person case.
Will Gina solve both cases - the death of Jade and the disappearance of Samantha in time before the sick killer strikes again?
This is a well-written solid police procedural/thriller, with lots of twists and suspects to keep the reader guessing.
Many thanks to the author, Bookouture via NetGalley for my digital copy.
This was the first book I have read by Carla Kovach and what an absolutely wonderful read. It is part of a series but it didn't leave me confused or unable to realise what was going on so it could be read as a stand alone. The Lair's House is raw, it doesn't sugarcoat anything, which in this day and age is not very common. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, in fact, I enjoyed it so much I have decided to go and read the other three in the series. Once I am caught up, I look forward to finding out what happens next.
Thanks to #netgalley and #bookouture for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. This is the 4th book in the Gina Harte series and it didn't disappoint. This book captured my attention from the first chapter. After a neighbourhood 'swapping' party, one of the guests doesn't make it home and is found murdered. Given the nature of the party there are many suspects could it her jealous husband or the partner of the man she had some one on one time with? Another of the guests os getting stalked...is the killer stalking his next victim? Another gritty mesmerizing read from Carla Kovach. Whilst it works as a stand alone read I would recommend starting at the beginning of the Gina Harte series to understand the history of Gina's life in more detail. #netgalley #goodreads #tea_sipping_bookworm #amazon#kindle #litsy #bookstagram #carlakovach #bookouture
Thrilling story, great plot and characters that keep you guessing right til the end. Great for fans of this genre. Really enjoyable.
another thrilling read from Carla. How we love it when her books come out! This was fast paced and well written...to a thrilling conclusion. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title.
I received a digital arc of #TheLiarsHouse from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I had loved the previous 3 books in the series and couldn't wait to start this one.
This book takes place over the space of 7 days, and what a jam packed 7 days they are! I barely had time to catch my breath before the next event or revelation took place! I thought I knew who the suspect was going to be, but as usual I was completely wrong and it came as a surprise when it was revealed.
Carla writes in such a way that pulls you in straight away and she takes you on an amazing journey, leaving you completely exhausted by the end of it. Already I can't wait for the next in the series - please let there be another one!
I loved this unputdownable book!
It was a thrilling, unnerving read. The characters were realistic. The plot was gripping and fast-paced. Run, do not walk, out to get this fab book.
Thank you NetGalley.
Another great DI Gina Harte book. This time Gina is called to the scene of a young woman who has been murdered.
The victim, Jade, was attending a swinging party - could one of the others be the murderer?
Gina also discovers that one of the other party goers is her ex-partner’s brother Steven which leads her to face demons she thought were hidden.
Where does the slightly odd Rex fit into this?
We also meet Diane who struggles to make ends meet and is haunted by actions she took when she was desperate to keep a roof over her young brother’s head.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns this story has.
The story was rather disappointing and in many ways predictable. I disliked DI Gina Harte and found the fact that most of the women character were abused/controlled women was highly frustrating.
I didn't feel particularly connected or interested in any of the characters and the reason i gave the book two stars was that the end was a bit different from what i expected.
I was planning on writing a longer review but i wouldn't be adding much to what i already said.
This is another book in the Gina Harte series, I have enjoyed the previous ones in the series so I was keen to read the next installment.
Jade was brutally murdered coming home from a party held locally. Seven years earlier Samantha went missing on her way home from a party. Her best friend Diane still misses her. When she receives a card supposedly from Samantha containing a fingernal with the same colour nailpolish Samantha always wore she contacts the police. Forensic examinination reveals that the nail actually belongs to Jade- what is the connection?
Gina works to solve the mystery, investigating the world of 'swinger' parties and regretting trying online dating as she seems to have aquired a stalker- who also seems to crop up at the parties!
This was a good read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
Many thanks to the publisher Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
A Dark and Gritty Crime Mystery!
This was another good story in the Gina Harte detective series. Gina is the lead detective on the case of a brutally murdered young wife and mother who was walking home late at night (in a peaceful residential area) from a party. There aren't any obvious clues to this murder so the detective and her team must begin a search of finding clues from all the people who attended this (unusual) party and discovering why anyone would want to kill this lovely woman and the possibility the killer may have other victims to come on (his or her) mind.
I really enjoyed this dark and clever story. The suspects were many and they all seemed capable of sinister motives if pushed too far and that made the story much more interesting for me. There was a touch of romance in Gina's life and many references to her very dark history and the tragedy that had occurred some years ago and the fact that she still battles with PTSD which keeps popping up in this case. I like the character of Gina, she is not a perfect female specimen and she has many flaws and is accepting of them most of the time but the author allows her vulnerability to speak out loud and clear. Throughout the book Gina battles with her strengths and weaknesses which make her a very complex character as well as being a relatable (likeable) woman. I will continue to read more books in this series and also I will be On the lookout for more of Carla Kovach's novels.
I highly recommend this detective book as well as the series and I have given it 4 Gritty 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!
A tension filled thriller that is built layer upon layer until readers are left with a surprising end. Carla Kovach has developed her Gina Harte character so well that you feel like she's a neighbor that you are trying to keep up with. The investigation into two murders that no one could possibly have thought were connected takes the police into the lives of these two women, raising questions not only about their lives but also the first investigation. Another great story that has left plenty of openings for the next book. I'll be watching for it!
This is book 4 in the Gina Harte series. I’ve read book 3 but definitely need to pick up 1 & 2. I’m really enjoying this series and want to get to know Gina more. This can be read as a standalone though.
I love Gina and I love that she’s not a perfect person and we get to see how her anxiety affects her day to day. We also learn more about her past and what caused the anxiety which helped me connect to her more. I also love Briggs.
This book is quite the rollercoaster. The nail that is sent to Samantha’s best friend provides a link between her disappearance and Jade's murder but there doesn’t seem to be any other link between them. Every time I thought I had worked out who it was more information came up and I started to question everything. It really did keep me guessing. I was hooked and could not put it down.
In this, the 4th book featuring DI Gina Harte, the body of a young wife and mother is found bludgeoned to death. It seems unlikely that it has anything in common with the disappearance 7 years earlier of another woman but it soon shows that these cases may be connected after all.
As well as the suspense of the main plot we also learn a bit more about Gina and her personal life, part of which seems to have come back to haunt her. This is a really good book that can be read as a stand alone as well as part of a series.

I received The Liar's House by Carla Kovach as an ARC from NetGalley. This was the first book that I have read in the Detective Gina Harte series and now I have to go back and read the other 3! Jade Ashmore is murdered after she leaves a party and her murder is discovered to be related to the murder of Samantha Felton 7 years ago. I enjoy crime novels like this and I found the characters very interesting. Thanks NetGalley for introducing me to this series.
(Detective Gina Harte Book 4) by Carla Kovach. #TheLiarsHouse #NetGalley
I love these novels. I've read all of them so far and this one doesn't disappoint. Gina grows as a detective her disfunctions become more clear. I don't want to give anything away but this is a must read.
Another addition in this excellent series. Gina is still struggling with her past and when the crime she’s investigating threatens to blow it into the open things get tense
Not my favourite of the series but a good read nonetheless
Thank you NetGally and Bookoutre for the ARC of this book.
I did not realise when I requested it that it was 4th in a series but that didn't seem to matter - I know want to read the ones that come before this one so that's a good thing.
This was definitely compulsive reading and a really great psychological thriller - I do love a psychological thriller so it was right up my street.
The plot is definitely unpredictable and there are loads of twists and turns with great characters.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good psychological thriller.
I have posted a review on Amazon - Stowv55
**Rounded up from 3.5 stars
Thank you to Netgalley, the Publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
I have read all the books in this series and although I love the main character, this was not my favourite book of the series. DI Gina Harte is struggling with coming to terms with all the crap that has taken place in her life all the while being a great detective. I love the inner struggle and the way she connects with these cases, The way she saw herself in one of the characters from this story was interesting and to see someone from her past come back and wreck havoc. I cannot wait to see where things go with Briggs and if they ever will live happily ever after. meanwhile, I will be content to read about her keeping the streets safer, one weirdo at a time.
This is the first DI Gina Harte book that I have read, and I loved it. It hooks you from the very beginning and keeps hold until the very last word.
This book sees Gina and her team struggle find the murderer of Jade Ashmore who is found bludgeoned to death after attending a party with her husband.
Seven years before a local woman Samantha had disappeared, and her friend Diane has never recovered. So she finds it strange when a birthday card addressed to Samantha is delivered to her house. Inside she finds a fingernail, which she assumes to be Samantha’s, however the police find it to be Jades’s.
How are Samantha and Jade linked? Is the same person responsible and is Samantha still alive? Gina and her team have to answer all these questions plus Gina has her own issues to contend with. Can she keep her underlying problems separate from her worklife?
This an excellent read, and I look forward to reading the others in the series.
