PERMISSION TO FEEL - Marc Brackett
I received this free to my Kindle for the purpose of review.
I began this book thinking it would be full of facts, figures, medical terms, etc. but was pleasantly surprised. Dr. Brackett's personal life as a young boy way the motivation for this book.
Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
He has spent years studying and researching a potentially accurate method of first learning the deeper issues we often try to hide but they are just there. RULER-Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, Regulate Emotion. PTSD is a real thing and not always related to war, but many times related to childhood issues that never were allowed to be expressed and confronted in a healthy manner. Therefore, we have all ages that act out in non appropriate ways because of being unaware of their own feelings.
We have spent decades telling our children and were probably told ourselves "don't cry". Well, what does that do to you the person who is deeply saddened or hurt by someone or something. It threatens our value and self-worth. When we see suicide on the rise in the USA we must allow people to feel and express that feeling. Of course, all aspects of the RULER philosophy have to be looked at and acted upon accordingly.
I highly recommend this book to parents with young children, couples with no children, singles; actually all people can benefit. You can better evaluate and make your own changes and you can be a more empathetic person and able to help someone else. No greater joy than to be a part of someone's Lon term satisfaction and purpose to life.
Was redundant in many places. I was disappointed. The subject is good. Needs content work, no rewriting, but the content that is there is lacking substance.
As someone who works in an elementary school, I was glad to see that a lot of the examples are based in classrooms so I could imagine these dynamics personally. I'm sure some teachers feel like there isn't time to do these feeling moments with students, but if little-to-no-learning is taking place now, it seems like it would be worth investing the time in connecting with students to get them invested in their learning. I'm going to recommend this book to my principal.
This book was a wonderful read and I would highly recommend it to educators. A key concept within this book is being able to identify our emotions in a more detailed and honest way. There is community built when educators are able to support students in understanding their emotions and also for educators to recognize their own emotions. It was powerful reading what it would look like to live in a world where emotional expression is encouraged particularly for emotions that are often seen as negative or unacceptable. I appreciated the RULER method created to provide opportunity to share emotional feelings I appreciated the color zones to describe emotions and highlighting the value of recognizing instead of just sad hearing if a student is defeated or devastated matters. As a school counselor socioemotional learning is core to my work, but I also believe it is core work for all educators. I wish the book included the model that was described for understanding the four quadrants of emotions. I received an ARC of this book for free and provided my honest feedback.
It was the subtitle that hooked me:
Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive
I am a PTSD survivor and my son is autistic, so you can imagine that emotions run pretty high in this home. As I was just preparing to write this review, my son rushed in, in tears and incredibly distraught, because a neighborhood kid had thrown a dead cicada at him. Luckily, I’d finished reading this book and was able to work through the moment using the main element of this book: The RULER Method.
"In the RULER framework, the first three skills— Recognizing, Understanding, and Labeling— help us to accurately identify and decode what we and others are feeling. Then, the two remaining skills— Expressing and Regulating— tell us how we can manage those emotions to achieve desired outcomes— our ultimate goal.”
MARC BRACKETT, PH. D. – PERMISSION TO FEEL
It is a wonderful tool for getting through feelings, which the book describes as the internal response to an emotion.
The book reads very well. There are plenty of scientific data and real-world examples to emphasize the causes and effects of emotions as well as the method presented. I, of course, particularly enjoyed the section on how emotions affect creativity. It helped identify what was holding me back when I had “writer’s block” and explained that emotions could be used to enhance creativity as well as hinder it. That gave me a big boost.
I recommend this book to literally everyone. There is not a single person it can’t help. So buy it for yourself, your family members, your friends…hell, even your child’s teacher.
I LOVE books like this....books from "legit" authors/directors who have lived out what they're writing. Who have helped countless of families and individuals thrive. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to review this.
Almost midnight is a good read that’ll keep you entertained. It is the 10th in the series, but can be read as a stand alone. Happy reading and enjoy!!!! :)
I learned a lot reading this book! It's a category I don't normally choose, but it was written in a style that's engaging and informative, not heavy-handed. I continued to think about the relevance of emotional intelligence to my teaching, as both linked with and separate from intellectual capacity, long after I finished reading it. It also made me think about emotional skills in my personal life; I even downloaded the MoodMeter app! But I haven't been very good about using it. :-/ Yet.
4 stars
Permission To Feel by Marc Brackett is a fascinating look at emotions and how better communications and expression of said emotions have the ability to change your life. This book should be required reading for all business leaders, bosses and school teachers. I really enjoyed this book even though I am not the target audience. I am able to easily see how these concepts would have helped me had a teacher employed them while I was in school.
I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own.
This is an extremely important book that everyone should read, and especially educators because our emotional lives are the foundation of our good health and well-being. It is highly readable and the author uses real life situations and stories as well as scientific research and facts that clearly illustrate how vital it is for all of us,parents, teachers and children alike, to be aware of and able to regulate and accept our emotions.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Permission to Feel is a wonderful guide to recognizing our own emotions and those of others. Author Marc Brackett has spent years researching this important topic after his experiences as a child showed him how life-changing it was to have someone see, listen and truly recognize the things you have gone through as an individual.
While Brackett has spent decades studying this important topic, he presents the information in this book in an attainable and accessible manner for his readers. The first part of this book dives into how understanding emotions and determining their sources can help us influence our behaviors moving forward. When we understand where and why we are feeling a certain way, we can regulate our own emotions instead of them regulating us. The more we know the more we can find practical strategies for dealing with what we feel and why we be might feeling that way.
Brackett shares that emotions are a powerful source of information. He shares that when we become "emotion scientists" we can learn how to use our emotions wisely, even when they are challenging emotions. Learning how to use them instead of ignoring them can help our figure out our steps forward.
Both physical and emotional symptoms can help us identify our feeling so we can respond appropriately. Feelings are strengths we all have when we learn how to label and understand them. When we can better understand both ourselves and each other, more people are able to be their best most authentic selves.
"Emotional skills are the key to unlocking the potential inside each one of us." Highly recommend!!
Thank you to Celadon Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Permission to Feel is a great starting point for learning how to Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate emotions (the RULER strategy). It provides an extensive amount of research and case studies for how to apply these principles to daily life both personally and professionally. There were less practical application sections in this book than I expected, but the author explicates the research and case studies in enough detail that the reader can extrapolate that information to personal and professional situations easily enough. Definitely a helpful book for those who struggle to deal with their emotions and the emotions of others.
This is such a thoughtful, well researched and well written book about emotional intelligence and how our emotions impact both children and adults in positive and negative ways. The author shares his personal experiences and research to help us understand that when we do not recognize, understand and allow ourselves to feel our emotions it leads to stress, anxiety and mental illness. It is not healthy for us to hide or block our emotions, though for many of us this was a learned behavior from childhood. So many times I felt I couldn't say how I really felt, often out of fear and/or I felt that they way I was feeling was "wrong." The author teaches us that to have healthy relationships, compassion and a sense of purpose we have to give ourselves permission to feel.
He has taken all his research and personal experiences and developed a program called RULER in which he shares tools and skills to help people understand and resolve their own issues with emotions. Thank you to Netgalley and Celadon Books for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I was blown away by this book. I have often heard people talk about the mind-body connection but never before have a read a book which so clearly explains how emotions affect health. The book addresses many everyday problems and shows how these problems can be healed by simply acknowledging the emotions of the individual. Like so many others, I was taught to ignore my emotions so that I would not be distracted by them. Reading this book opened my eyes to how that approach may have been causing many of the small gripes in my life from indigestion to family bickering and even insomnia. Absolutely brilliant. In the future I bet emotional health will be a standard component of general wellness, and this book shows concrete ways to put that into practice.
Marc Brackett provides a clear method for identifying, understanding, and teaching emotional intelligence. As a high school teacher, I see the increase of depression and anxiety among students. Brackett provides practical applications that enhance personal and professional environments. The author includes extensive research that supports his methods and his results. I will definitely recommend this book for professional development, and I will definitely begin utilizing Brackett's methods in my classroom this year. A rare book that resonates with reality.
Permission to Feel is an engaging, inspiring book. I took many notes and have made a list of ideas that I want to immediately incorporate into my classroom as a result of reading this book. What I learned from Marc Brackett's work will help me to become a better teacher.
I want to add this book to my own library as a reference book to which I know I would come back to over and over again. I can better learn to understand how I am feeling. I need to revisit and study the parts of "RULER".I can't wait to incorporate Mood Meters into my classroom. I would love to have us develop a classroom charter. Meta- moments! "What would my best self do?" The list of my takeaways from this book goes on and on.
I highly recommend this book for all educators and really for all humans in general!
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the advanced reading copy!

As educators, we are faced with an ever growing challenge to support students from a range of diverse backgrounds and needs. The key to supporting students comes down to teachers’ willingness to build strong relationships with students. Dr. Brackett makes the point that building a culture of emotionally healthy youth starts from the top down. Teachers need to be emotionally supported by administration, and both teachers and their administration need to model what it looks like to be emotional and successful. When teachers emotions are taken care of, they will be better equipped to support the varying emotional needs of students, and support students through their developing emotional needs.
As Dr. Brackett says, “understanding emotions is a journey” and through his book, Permission to Feel, Dr. Brackett explains the importance of understanding one’s own emotions, knowing descriptive language to articulate emotions, and learning to regulate one’s emotions. By explaining why it is imperative for us to start to accept, understand, and support our emotional selves, Dr. Backett argues that we can support the younger generations to embrace emotions and live a successful life.
I appreciated every part of this book. For a reflective educator, this book has provided me with many considerations for approaching my students in the future. I appreciate the connection to schools and the anecdotes which provide examples for practitioners to consider in their approach to supporting students emotionally.
