It's impossible to think of Windows on the World, the restaurant high in one of the Twin Towers in New York City, without thinking of its tragic end on 9/11. Roston uses the restaurant to tell the story of the revitalization of New York and the history of dining out in the city. Will appeal to readers who enjoy American history, culinary nonfiction, and interesting true stories.
A really enjoyable, and quite strange, look at something I was totally ignorant of. It isn't the kind of book I would normally look at, but I'm glad I did. Eye-opening, remarkable and surprisingly funny.
Recommended.
I couldn't fail to be moved by this book. Ultimately it's a story of survival, of building up from the ashes and the strength of the human spirit. A great read.
Amazing story. I never got to the restaurant, but heard so much about it from relatives who did. So sorry about what happened there. Just tragic. I am glad someone took the time to tell it's story. The amazing people who worked there need to be remembered. I think the World trade Center really helped turn NYC around when it was built. I remember what a nightmare NYC was in the early 70's; just so grungy.... The World Trade Center was just such as amazing place from top to bottom; an absolute wonder. Crowned by an amazing restaurant that over looked all of Manhattan. This is a wonderful tribute to the remarkable staff. Photos are wonderful.
I located a copy to read as I only had a Kindle to read on and no way to download to pdf.
I found this very hard to read because of remembering the tragic events of 9/11. It is well worth reading, though;
it is an excellent and comprehensive history of a unique restaurant from its start to its awful finish.
