It's a little slow at the beginning, if you can make it past that its a okay book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance read, I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
"He thrilled at the challenge of curbing that bit of rebellion."
"Would she be aggressive in bed or bow to all his demands? He liked the idea of teaching her how to please him in every way, to tame and direct her challenging spirit."
This makes complete sense.... sense why he didn't have any relationship before this. These are his thoughts, besides all the other thoughts of having sex with her sleeping body, after she nearly dies trying to save herself. Seriously??? Because this is what a normal man thinks after coming across a woman who faints after fighting off her attackers!
It was just creepy. Being a woman, I am unable to know what a guy thinks. Being a woman, the author is also, I assume, imagining how a guy thinks. Either that, or we should all be glad that a woman cannot read a man's thoughts. Otherwise, we would all be very single. Because, in no way, I find this sexy or hot or anything other than creepy!
I was all bothered and indignant for the women of the world and ready to believe men were far inferior to women when I read what the heroine thought about the assassin. She wakes up in an unfamiliar place, sleeping next to a stranger with her last thoughts about this stranger taking her away after nearly dying and for two pages she keeps going on how hot he is (while he is sleeping) and how aroused she is by his (still sleeping) body.
Then they talk....
"When a female slaps a man where I come from, it's an invitation for the male to take control even in their sexual play."
Maybe, someone should tell him that now a days, it is called rape. Actually, it was always called raped, but now a days, people take it more seriously and prosecute. And those someone should also tell her that this is NOT arousing.
Then they passionately kiss.
To be honest, this is the place I would have stopped reading if I had not received a free ARC and was expected to write a review for this book. So let me get to that now...
The heroine was a hot mess of contradictions and inconsistencies. Example :
1. She is constantly moving around. She still manages to find two best friends who call themselves her family. She tells them about her superpowers. The guy best friend has a crush on her. The said guy best friend leaves her to fend for the attackers by herself. She has a sixth sense of never seeing her best friends again.
2. She is scared of the assassin. She is kidnapped by the assassin. She is aroused by the assassin. She is kissed by the assassin as a way to shut her up. She is objectified by the assassin. She is worried the assassin doesn't like "aggressive women like her" (Honey, the word you are looking for is doormat!). She is shy around the assassin. The assassin is shy around her. She and assassin end up having sex. The end!
Don't worry, Blade is the same way....
Blade thinks this is a warrior I want to dominate. Mine! He thinks she is hot. Mine! His beast wants to claim her. Mine! Blade is ordered to protect her, but he does it for himself. Mine! He can't have sex with a prostitute anymore. Again, because she (the heroine) is Mine! He needs to stay away from her because he is a soulless assassin who can't feel anything. But she is Mine! They end up having sex and live happily ever after.
I have tried to avoid spoilers in this review.
Leaving out the characters, the would have been far better. But since, characters were a bust for me, the book left me feeling I went through a grinder after being thoroughly shaken first. A lot of people have enjoyed this book, so maybe, it was me and not the book.
And that ladies and gentlemen, was my break up line, ending the very toxic relationship I had with this book.
I truly enjoyed this book! The beginning was a bit slow to get into, but once the ball started rolling, I was sucked into it.
I loved the writing, the description was heavy, but in a positive way! Sometimes detailed narrative irritates me, but in this novel it was well-put.
The hero and heroine had a palpable bond, however they did start expressing their love for each other a bitt too quickly for me 👀
