Comatose is the first book I've read by this author. It was an interesting read and one that kept me reading until the very end.
This book really is not holding my interest and unfortunately I don't feel like I am going to be finishing it.
Comatose is such a pleasant surprise! I wanted to read it for several reasons and every aspect was truly satisfying. The dreaming-theme is something everyone fascinates but I liked how it is attached to AI. Another huge plus are the places where the story takes place: Malaysia and Seoul are refreshing choices. Even though the beginning is quite slow the story itself is suspensful which makes it an enjoyable read.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to stop reading at the 15% mark. This book is not holding my interest at all. It jumped around unnecessarily at the beginning and left me feeling confused because I didn't know who the characters were. At this point it has settled into a groove, but the plot has yet to become evident and the dialogue is very difficult to read. It is tedious that the characters keep switching between languages, and I say this as someone who has studied six languages It just doesn't feel necessary.
For me the worst part is that the characters don't speak like actual people do. There's a man whose wife is in a coma, and rather than show his concern, he's joking around with his friend and tinkering with his toys. The hospital she is in is set up like a resort, which comes across as completely over-the-top, not just top-rated. Everyone is "too" nice and accommodating, to the point where it comes across as insincere. And the doctor, who is actually using comatose patients for his experiments, is speaking very condescending to supposedly-educated adults, who, rather than take offense, respond like children who are receiving pats on the head.
I'm afraid I am not interested in continuing to see where the story goes. At this point I haven't been able to connect with the characters are care about their motives in any capacity.
Comatose is a interesting book that keeps you entertained. A quick read that has interesting characters.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley.
Comatose has a super unique storyline. It follow four strangers trying to cheat death.
The author is great at story-telling. This isn't my normal genre, that's for sure. but it was interesting.
