Four women met in the cafeteria of the hospital where each was spending time with a parent undergoing chemotherapy. A year later, they are grappling with loss and grief and how to support each other. They turn to having weekly potlucks to connect and heal, while also striving to find meaning in their daily activities.
While the author is tackling a very worthwhile and difficult subject in dealing with grief, the pace and flow of the story just didn't draw me in. The sentence structure felt a bit choppy and lacking descriptive elements to really connect me to the characters. Perhaps the book in its entirety will be more developed and heartfelt, but as it is, the story left me wanting more substance.
This was an excerpt for The Sunday Potluck Club. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advance copy excerpt in exchange for an honest review.
Sadly was just an excerpt on here, and of course it ended right where it was getting good. A teaser that worked. I am interested in reading the full story now, but will most likely forget a lot of it before it comes out. The book is about a small group of women who got together to share their struggles and grief with parents going through cancer treatment and later dying. The bond between them is strong, and they still meet and are friends even after the loss. Would recommend, at least from what I've read so far.
Only the first few chapters were available to review on NetGalley. It was a good start and I'd enjoy reading more.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
After reading this book, I can say that friendship that are worth a lifetime can be found in the darkest of places. The friendship of Bridget and Amy is found in one such way in one of the most peculiar places, which is the cancer ward. They embark on a journey of healing facing thorugh hardships while finding companionship with other grieving mothers. This has been an amazing read .
I really enjoyed this excerpt - a great read- and am looking forward to the full galley next year! I am already wondering what happens!
This is a review for the first few chapters made available to Netgalley. Thanks for the copy of this.
This was just ok. I honestly stopped 30% in and just didn’t care. I had a hard time differentiating the characters and didn’t feel like there was much intro about the characters. Nothing to really draw me in.
This book seems really cute and fun to read. I cannot wait until the full book either comes out on NetGalley or is published! Surely this will be a winner!!
This is a sweet little excerpt about loss and how it draws people to one another. These women a are bonded together after deaths in their family and what coincides well with grief??? Food.
Form what I’ve read so far this is a sweet read with some tough moments and circumstances and I’m excited d to read more!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Adorable and cozy this hit the spot for a warm fuzzy lighthearted read full of wonderful relationships and great deep characters that stole your heart and kept you so invested in their lives this could easily be read through in one sitting with a cozy cup of tea or coffee it just was perfect for a mood lifter and puts a smile on your face the whole time
This was an excerpt for The Sunday Potluck Club. It circles around 4 friends who met in the cancer ward. Each of them had a loved one fighting for their lives. The cancer ward is not the ideal place to make friends but these four are bonded over something that no one else understands unless they have been through it.
Every Sunday they each bring a dish and share dinner together. It started to bring a sense of normalcy but evolved into friends sharing a meal together. The main character of the book seems to be Amy. She is a second grade teacher who lost her mom to cancer. She feels like the mom of the group to me. She seems to have a soft spot for Bridgette who is the youngest in the group and just lost her mom.
I like the writing style of the book so far and the characters. I look forward to reading the book in its entirety when it is released.
Not exactly the kind of book I'd usually read, but this one caught my eye, and, though only a excerpt of the story,I really enjoyed it! The women felt like women I know. Drawn together by parents with cancer, the women form a tight knit group who support each other in their trials. They gather for pot lucks to provide support services for each other and even attend each's parents funerals- those vary wildly and widely in nature. Such an uplifting story. I think it will find lots of readers! It is well written and an easy read.
I received a Kindle arc of the book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
This was such a tease but i just cant wait for the finished book now so i can see what happens with the rest of the story and characters
Loved the premise of this book. Having had a series of losses in the recent past, grief is something that I can relate to. Also, I am aware that each of us grieves in our own way. From the excerpt, I gathered how these friends tried to accept each other's way if mourning while coming t terms with their own losses.
Looking forward to reading the book.
A group of women met as a result of their parents being diagnosed with cancer. They became each other’s support system and they became friends.
As time went on, they also supported each other through their parents’ funerals. The deaths were staggered back to back, with the exception of the one friend whose parent recovered and survived.
This story starts as the last funeral has ended. The youngest woman in group, only 23, has just lost her mom. Her friends are worried that it hasn’t full hit her yet. Although they’ve agreed to respect each other’s way of grieving, they feel that their friend might be in denial.
Meanwhile, one friend is far enough past her mom’s death that she’s returning to work. She is still broken hearted and majorly suffering from her loss.
This was an excerpt rather than the full book. It seems like it’ll be a good story about friendship. It also seems like animals and romance will factor in as well. I’ll definitely request the galley of the full book when it’s posted.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review the opening chapters of this new book. Given that the full book will not be available to review until February 2020, my review is based on the initial chapters available to me, I would say the book has promise. It starts out a little bit on the depressing side so I was a bit worried when it started, but the book picks up steam as you read on. It could use a bit more punch at the outset as this sets the tone for the reader. It's okay for the story to be about women bonding over their shared grief, but maybe start further in and then take the reader back to the beginning later on? Just an idea...
Definitely interested in reading this whole novel when it's released! I love women-centric books, and there was a lot I was enjoying about this excerpt. There s so much potential, and I'm ready to devour this in 2020.
From the small amount that I can read I’m liking this one!!! Will be watching for the whole thing! Seems like it will be a great read!
Thanks Kensington Books & NetGalley for sharing this one with us!
Two cancer survivors struggling to get back to living after their treatment form a club to get through and help others along the way.
Well written except of what promises to be a great book. My thanks to the publisher for my advance ebook. This is my unbiased review.
I was only allowed access to a few chapters but read them quickly and can't wait to read the whole book. I'm looking forward to getting a copy for the library and reading it!
