I really think Mike Rowe should run for president! I've watched many of his TV shows and follow his many projects on social media. Not only does he make sense, it's obvious he cares about the world we live in and wants to improve life for us all. This book flows just like you were reading his posts or listening to his shows. He is definitely a man who makes a difference on a daily basis. The humor he shares with us just serves to make the lessons a little easier for everyone. My vote is cast...Mike Rowe for president!
I have heard Mike Rowe speak both live and on TV, and I feel like he is speaking this book in my head as well. The Way I Heard it is a perfect combination of historical stories (presented in a way that goes beyond what we have all heard on our history classes) and personal stories of a man who has become iconic in our society. Reading both the historical and the personal, I feel like both are a glimpse into something special. I feel like I am in on something. I love that this book is so easy to pick up and read a chapter at a time. It is just enough of a taste that I can jump in whenever I have a few minutes (though I always ended up reading more than one once I got started). I have highly enjoyed Mike Rowe everywhere I have seen or heard him. This feels like he is sitting on my front porch with me on a warm summer evening sharing stories like I would with a good friend.
Mike Rowe has a distinctive voice, even when he is writing. I could listen to his stories all day. It is always interesting to find hidden facts about people you think you know. If anything, I would have loved more behind the scene stories of the people in Dirty Jobs and how this has led him to form his organization. Maybe his next book?
Mike Rowe's wit and intelligence come across in this memoir loud and clear. The collection of his short stories is as entertaining as his podcasts. You can imagine his voice as you read each of the essays. What a fun way to spend a day - learning about people, places and things in easy-to-digest nuggets.
As a fan of Mike Rowe, I enjoyed this book. He gives information about historical figures that I had not heard before. He includes his own back story and that of some of the characters we have come to know because of Mike and his shows. I have recommended this book to others. The only thing I wish it had were pictures! But, I guess that isn't how he heard it!
The Way I Heard It by Mike Rowe is a wonderful, funny, and insightful book, which I loved. I have always liked Mr. Rowe's sense of humor, but this book was so much more. The stories kept me reading from page after page, trying to guess who he was talking about. I strongly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and the publisher. Thank you.
I have always loved Mike Rowe, his quick wit, his engaging stories, his instantly recognizable voice, and even the stories he recounts of his parent's hysterical and adorable conversations. Simon and Schuster gifted me this on audio and hearing Mike Rowe read it to me was absolutely incredible. Thank you SO much for the opportunity to read this amazing book!
I love reading this feel good inspirational true stories.
On a blue day (or any day) it's a great reminder that good things come to those who work hard and overcome obstacles creatively.
It also helps that while reading, I hear Mike Rowes unmistakable voice.
I loved Paul Harvey and I love that Rowe has picked up the storyteller mantle and carried it forward.
The stories are interesting, with twists and turns, and i love Rowe's continued interpretations at the end of many of the vignettes. A great read.
While not something that should win a Pulitzer or National Book Award, this is a must read for fans of Mike Rowe's TV shows or podcasts or blogs. Plus, for those of a certain age who were fans of Paul Harvey, this will take you back to the days when "The Rest of the Story" kept you on the edge of your seats. (If you don't know who that is.....Google him!)
In brief "mysteries", Rowe tells the stories of inspirational characters and then ties their experiences to his own. So you get a biography/mystery/essay/self-help book all in one. The vignettes are short, and not necessarily in chronological order, so they can be read in short spurts and even out of order if you want. It's a quick read even if you go stright through. Recommended for a "feel good" read, especially if you are a fan. If not, I'll bet you will be afterward.
There is nothing to dislike about Mike Rowe's down home book. He has to be one of the most likable men in America. Mike has the story telling ability of Paul Harvey, the magnetic personality of Arnold Palmer, and the smirky sense of humor of Tim Allen. For my money, that's a pretty good trio to join.
Rowe sets out to tell the reader stories. They are everyday stories and most have a twist. He follows the Paul Harvey formula of telling us enough to keep us intrigued and then reveals who the story was about. Once the mystery has been unraveled, Rowe gives us a biographical peek into his own life. His humor is self-deprecating and he never takes himself too seriously.
There really is nothing to dislike about either Mike Rowe, his book or his story telling ability. So let's give it five stars.
What a great read. If you have ever listened to Rowe's podcast you will be familiar with the stories he pulls from there, but the biographical tales he intertwines with those "The Way I Heard It" bits make it much more interesting. Rowe shares some of his favorite "The Way I Heard It" stories and then follows with a related story from his own life creating a mixture that flows smoothly and revolves back around to itself in a way that holds your attention. And if you have ever listened to his podcast then you might have the same experience I did where you hear his voice as you are reading his words!
A huge thanks to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I saw this pop up in my options on Netgalley one day and immediately asked for it. I love Mike Rowe so much as a person and as an entertainer. I didn't really know what it would be about and I didn't really care. But I didn't need to worry about a thing. Mike presented us with a collection of essays about various celebrities that came with a history lesson. The deal was that he would give us many many clues and we were supposed to guess who it was about. Oddly enough, I knew very few. But, to be fair, I had no idea that most people in the celebrity world weren't even using their real names. I loved reading about his own early history and I loved reading about the celebrities, even the ones I didn't know. There was so much about HIM that I didn't know so obviously I loved that part...but the entire book kept me interested the whole time. It was a very easy to read book that I just ate up. Honestly, though, I was reading it in his voice and come on...he could read the telephone book and make it sound interesting. Wait, maybe he's done that before too?
I enjoy any book that makes me interested enough that I have to keep stopping to look something up about what I just read. But he DID say he would wait while we Googled it.
Mike Rowe is goofy (in the best possible way) and charming and engaging and endearing - he is who he is and does and says what he wants, and that is what I've always loved about him and his shows. The book reads exactly the way I imagined it would - it is full of fun facts, odd tidbits of history and pop culture, and anecdotes that tug at the heartstrings in a genuine and moving way, while providing surprising bursts of insight, self-awareness, and humor. I loved the way he spun the perspective of the tales he told so that it was often not clear until the very end (if at all!) who the story was actually about - it was a clever way to tell tales and meant that I was engaged throughout even if I was already familiar with the story being told. It was an entertaining and quick read and one I would definitely recommend!
Mike Rowe is a natural storyteller. His wisdom, humor, common sense and compassion are evident throughout these compelling stories of humanity. I especially love the mystery of the personality at the start of each chapter. Mike’s rolling out of little known tidbits leading up to the reveal is brilliant. Mike also peppers in his personal history and TV-land experiences. He has lived a colorful life and worked many interesting jobs. I enjoyed reading the stories of his work experiences and was unfamiliar with some of them, such as Deadliest Catch which I watched for years but had no idea Mike narrated that show. Mike Rowe is an awesome guy, an inspiration and a master at his craft. I look forward to see where he goes from here.
*will add to additional online book sites shortly.
The Way I Heard It by Mike Rowe has been great fun to read. I really enjoyed his stories. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, sit back and relax and get ready for a fun ride. Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for this amazing early copy.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This is a “ridiculously entertaining, seriously fascinating collection” of Mike Rowe’s favorite episodes from his podcast. For a brief time, I listened to the podcast at work, but found myself drifting off and neglecting work to concentrate on the story being told. This collection of 35 stories will engage you completely. Each is told in two parts. The first tells the story of the character whose identity is hidden until the end, so don’t peek ahead. The second part is Mike Rowe, the storyteller, weaving the story around to some facet of his life. He’s an interesting guy with a great sense of humor, and a conversational tone to his writing. Kind of like Paul Harvey.
As I’ve seen other reviewers mention, the entire time you are reading, it is Mike Rowe’s voice in your head! This is a great collection of facts and insights that will be hard to put down. Delightful and uplifting from start to finish, this one is so worth your time!

Mike Rowe is so much more than the host of television and radio shows. He is funny and full of interesting tidbits about people he has had the pleasure to meet and/or interview. The concept of breaking this up into short sections was brilliant, as it was easy to read on my breaks at work. Highly recommend!
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book. I loved this book for many reasons. The stories were about many people throughout history and the stories were fascinating. They were short enough to enjoy but packed full of Mike Rowe's way of thinking. While reading this book it was like sitting beside the fireplace and he was sitting there beside me. When I read about him being late at the airport one time because he had to hear the rest of the story by Paul Harvey, I too listened to Pal Harvey and had to wait to hear the rest of the story many times. I thought well these are short story chapters so I won't be late. Yes, I was late a few times, reading the book so he does have some Paul Harvey in him. Already I have gone back and reread a few stories. The stories capture your attention and seem to bring them to life, now that is a good writer. It is a wonderful book by an amazing man.
I've been a fan of Mike Rowe since the early days of Dirty Jobs. I have never been one for watching podcasts, but after reading this book I just might have to start. While to historical tidbits (taken directly from his postcast that shares the name of this book) are very interesting, it's Mike's comentary afterwards that truly make this book stand out. You'd think the being the voice behind so many hit shows & having a bronze bust of himself would give a guy an ego. Not Mike Rowe. Reading about his humble beginnings & the year spent in a haunted mansion only goes to show what a down-to-Earth guy Mike Rowe is. If he wasn't, the bust wouldn't be hidden in his garage (I'll openly admit I'd have one of me on display if it looked halfway decent). So, all rambling aside, I strongly recommend everyone read this book. You'll learn some interesting history, and also think about some other stuff along the way.
