Disciplines of a Godly Man by R.Kent Hughes is one of the classics of Christian living. This new edition updates the tried and tested book in a way that helps us see more clearly what is already present in the previous addition. Furthermore, this new addition brings new insights and speaks into modern, everchanging culture.
This book is must read for any man who seeks to follow God's Word faithfully.
Christianity, godliness, is far more than a checklist. Being "in Christ" is a relationship, and like all relationships it deserves disciplined maintenance, but never legalistic reduction-ism.
According to Mr. Hughes discipline is everything. In order to lead your family, business, and personal life well, discipline is needed. Disciplined must be developed not as a check list of things to do or where pride leads to self-righteousness but as a way to know and follow the Lord well. Being a wife and mother, I felt like this study ministered to me as well in my own life and the lack of discipline. The whole aspect of relationship and discipline is rich in many different ways. There is accountability, there is motive of love and care, and when there is lack of discipline, you are not alone in your despair.
The study is in 5 parts.
Introduction into Godly Discipline
Relationships
Soul
Character
Ministry
What discipline looks for each these parts and how it help you grow in Godliness and in your relationships. Discipline is a tool that makes growth possible.
My greatest take away was the prayer app PrayerMate which has given me a new outlook in prayer. I suggest you look this up and download. I now look forward to prayer as it keeps me focused and in the word as it has a list of scripture to be used in prayer depending on the need.
This study is geared to the needs of men but as I stated before, I was ministered by it as well. I think it can be helpful for a wife to read to be the help mate for her husband in his request for discipline.
A Special Thank you to Crossway Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Disciplines of a Godly Man by R. Kent Hughes is a book that I have been wanting to pick for a long time. The book has been around for over a decade and highly recommended among many church leaders. Crossway has now an updated version of the book available along with study questions for those who are doing a group study or your own personal growth.
In this book, Hughes addresses the issue that men in our day are not disciplined. There are a number of reason for what he does go into great detail. He also expresses that men are on a spiritual decline where women are growing more spiritually then they are. While we can rejoice that women in the church are growing spiritually, we also must be concerned that the men in the church are not. The church in America, as Hughes puts it, needs real men and I agree. The church needs men who will lead, grow spiritually, love their families, and stand for truth. Contrary to what Feminism says, women in the church desire to see men stand up for Christ and take charge.
The rest of the book deals with the discipline of a man in every area of their lives. The first is in relationships. We must have discipline to be husbands and fathers. We also must be disciplined in purity where we seek to be holy in our words and actions in our relationships. Next, we must be disciplined in our spiritual growth. We need to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ as 2 Corinthians 10 tells us. We also desire prayer and worship in our spiritual growth.
Hughes goes on to address our character that we must be men of integrity and men who do their jobs well. We also must be disciplined in ministry where we are ready to serve in our churches. Not every Christian is called to vocational ministry, by we are all called to be involved in ministry. We are also called to be a witness as well. Christ commands the church to make disciples. The church need men who are disciplined who will be able to make disciples.
There is so much in this book that it might take a few posts to address them. I am grateful that I had the chance to read this book and hope to read it again with a small group of men as we seek to be the men that the church needs.

As you all know I like to read my husband´s books. My dh R has been part of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences, R. Kend Huges, the author of this book, is the founder! (in case you don´t know) the conferences are available throughout North America and worldwide. Other pastors, I respect recommend that training too. Since he told me it was good material, I didn´t hesitate to dive into this book. As you know WE READ A LOT, but I do not write a review on every book we take... just the ones I´m thankful about. This one is priceless. I am challenged in the way I live my spiritual life. One thing you may find useful is the study guide because it will give you the opportunity to study with others (I truly appreciate when authors add that bonus! an when they add resources for further growth, they help me to pick my next book, my wishlist is growing, and growing) It is a very user-friendly book. Hopefully, someday soon a local group will start this study and grow as a godly man. Even when this book is for man, I think if a woman reads it she will be encouraged to pray for the man and to grow in the discipline as well. I´m grateful for Crossway and this practical and biblical resources, they encourage me in my walk with Christ. Part 3 and 6 were my favorite because I need to focus on my soul, mind, and consistency. R. Kent Hughes challenged me to a more disciplined life, "no sweat, no sainthood".
You can pre-order now, you won´t regret. Release day is July 30th.
