Beautiful, tasty, and well presented cookbook full of Palestinian-inspired recipes you will want to eat every week. Worth a buy!
I am a home cook and baker, teach young adults how to cook, and really, really enjoy reading cookbooks. Many of my cook books are from the Middle East, North Africa and South Eastern Europe - this book is now on my shelf, and in regular rotation in my kitchen.
The recipes are tasty, not too difficult to follow, and more than well laid out in the book. The book is beautiful, holds stories and other anecdotes that complement the recipes fluidly. I have recommended this book to many. Thank you.
Beautifully presented cookbook that highlights the variety of flavors and influences on Israeli cusine.
One of the best ethnic cookbooks to hit the market this year! Rich, vibrant photographs accompany relatively simple, yet complex flavored, recipes. The included stories really make the title shine. A must have addition for any home cook!
Artisan Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Shuk: From Market to Table, the Heart of Israeli Home Cooking. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
A shuk is an open air marketplace, filled with the tantalizing smells competing for attention from the many stalls and booths. This cookbook is designed to give the reader a clear picture of modern Israeli cuisine and its deep roots into the cultures of many different regions. Shuk is separated into multiple sections, including: Salad All Day; Cauliflower and Eggplant; Dairy and Eggs for Breakfast and for Dinner; Mad About Chicken; All About the Rice; Soups to Comfort and Refresh; Deliciously Stuffed; The Couscous Table, The Flavor of Fire; Flatbreads, Traditional Breads, and Sweet Endings.
The beautifully photographed dishes are sure to inspire readers to try something new, educating their palates to the complexities of the flavor profiles. Those who are new to Israeli cooking will soon discover how healthy and flavorful the finished dishes are, laden with lean protein and delicious vegetables. There are too many good recipes to mention, from stews, to Persian Beef and Duck Meatballs, to Israeli cheesecake. Readers looking to expand their palates will not be disappointed in Shuk and I look forward to trying each and every recipe in this cookbook.
This cookbook was beautifully illustrated and the recipes were easy to follow. I would recommend it for people interested in an introduction to Israeli cooking and food.
Israeli food has enjoyed a surge in popularity lately, and for good reason: Israeli food is healthy as well as delicious. Shuk: From Market to Table, the Heart of Israeli Home Cookingis one of the best cookbooks to introduce cooks to Israeli cooking, as well as to * those who don’t know much about the history of the region and influences in cooking. The authors, Einat Admony and Janna Gur are both professional cooks who have written several cookbooks, and they know what they’re talking about.
A Shuk is the marketplace, and the authors speak fondly of the beautiful offerings at any given time, especially the fruits and vegetables. According to Gur, “the contemporary Israeli food scene is a fusion of the local (Levantine/Palestinian) cuisine with foods brought to Israel by Jewish immigrants (including settlers from Eastern Europe followed by a large wave of immigrants from central Europe…and hundreds of thousands of immigrants from North African and Middle Eastern countries)”.
The photographs in this beautiful cookbook are exquisite, and make it difficult to decide what to make. Israelis eat salad three times a day, including breakfast, and their salads are mouthwatering. Salads are so important in this cuisine, that there is a section outlining Israeli Salad Rules. Some favorite salads that are in the queue are the basic Israeli Salad which is suitable for serving with any meal, Israeli or not, as well as Orange and Olive Salad with Harissa Vinaigrette, Cauliflower Tabbouleh with Crunchy Seeds, and Autumn Salad with Farro, Apple, and Roasted Persimmons. There are side dishes, soups, main dishes, and desserts, some made with exotic ingredients, and some with ingredients already in our cupboards. The Shakshuka recipe is delicious, and the Orange Blossom–Scented Roast Chicken and Potatoes is suitable for just family or guests. Another favorite is Hummus with Spiced Beef.
After reading this book, it is probably a good idea to make a trip to a Middle Eastern grocery to pick up any unusual ingredients needed for the dishes you’ve chosen. Then, you’ll be able focus on the easy-to-follow recipes and turn out picture-perfect dishes. There is something here for everyone, and it is a cookbook that will inspire cooks, from beginning to advanced.
Highly recommended, this book makes a good gift and especially a good addition to a cookbook collection.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Gorgeous and stunning book! Rich in beautiful photographs and stunning recipes. I'm particularly excited to prepare the chermoula, spicy tomato salad and Moroccan vegetable soup. Fans of Zahav and Ottolenghi will want to grab this book. I look forward to purchasing copies to give as gifts.
Thank you, Artisan Books and NetGalley for this digital ARC!
Shuk From Market to Table Israeli Home Cooking
By Einat Admony and Janna Gur
This is a beautiful cookbook. The first thing about this book that strikes you as soon as you open the cover is the incredible photography. The colors are rich and vibrant bringing the the food and the market to life. Your mouth waters at the pictures of each dish and then you read the ingredients. Now you can practically taste the food emanating right off the page.
The ingredient lists are short . There is great detail in how to make some of the spices combinations that may be hard to find in the United States. The detail and explanations behind the Shuk, itself, an Israeli market, and each recipe also is just fun reading.
You will enjoy just reading and sharing this cookbook with friends. The added treat will be savoring the food just for yourself , your family or with company.
I am in love with this cookbook! The stories are very informative, the recipes sound delicious, and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. The authors give wonderful background and context to all of the recipes and I felt immersed in the world of Israeli food culture. Truly wonderful and highly recommended!
Fascinatingly beautiful, informative and practical this book of Israeli cuisine was created by two of the foremost voices in Israeli culinary arts. The book examines the culture of the Shuks of Israel, the marketplaces that provide the raw ingredients for the wonderful collection of recipes included within. The book is much more than a cookbook; the authors share their stories, traditions, and culinary arts as well as a visitors guide to each of the eight Shuks featured. The recipes are traditional shuk to table . They focus on the local cuisine of each as well as the eateries found in each area. The photography is stunning, giving the reader the visual experience of visiting the places and visually tasting the food. The culture and the backgrounds of the dishes and the methods and techniques are beautifully presented. The recipes are interesting and easy to follow. This is a spectacular book!!
