An irreverent but useful compendium of all things Jewish. Covers culture, history, religion, food, etc. Does not shy away from controversy (the entry for Woody Allen mentions the abuse allegations against him, and the entry for Adolf includes "not a good baby name anymore", while Mark Zuckerberg's entry is illustrated with a thumbs-down emoji). There's even a listing for "bark mitzvah", which is, as you would imagine, a coming-of-age ritual for your dog.
This encyclopedia has something for everyone. It delivers the “facts” with the humor characteristic of its sister publications. It’s a publication well worth owning for it will bring a smile to the faces of those in the know or those among the newly educated.
I doubt there will be many reviews of this book that don’t use the term “unorthodox.” It’s a reference, but it’s a lot of fun. Some of the entries made me laugh out loud. There’s much inside humor, but it really is accessible, and I do believe that there is much to learn from this book for Jews and non-Jews alike. It’s graphically lively, with pictures and sidebars to keep up the interest and highlight various information.
I will definitely be buying this book for my home! Infused with a healthy dose of humor, this is the perfect book for your (unorthodox) Jewish home! I found I learned a few new things with the help of the regular players. There are Yiddish phrases throughout, various religious aspects, and a whole lot of culture. I think this would be great for anyone looking to learn more about the Jewish Faith/Religion also.
Broken into bite-sized chunks and infused with a healthy dose of humor, this is the perfect coffee table book for your (unorthodox) Jewish home! All the regular players make an appearance, along with several Yiddish phrases, various religious aspects, and a whole lot of culture!
A thoroughly hilarious and factual historical and contemporary walk through Judaism from A to Z. Mesmerizing details and laugh out loud antics required me to read this in one sitting as I could not put it down. The team behind 100 Most Jewish Foods has returned raising the bar yet again on how we learn about and celebrate this dynamic culture, religion and tribe. A must have for every gentile and Jew.
