This is another great read from Jess Michaels, this novella features David Shaw and Miss Rose Higgins in a rather exciting rags to riches story. The telling of this story was very good and the story was most certainly very entertaining to read. The characters had a good connection with each other and I loved how we got to see a few older characters from the 1797 club series appear for a brief moment within the story. My only reason not to give this book 5 Stars is that I would have loved more of the back story for both of Rose and David, and maybe that's not possible for a story of this length but I felt that this book would have been so much better at being a full length novel as it left me wanting to find out more of what both of the lead characters had endured in their lives, other than that I really did love the idea behind their love story and so maybe it's just the fact that Jess's writing is alway so good that I find myself always wanting more from this author!
Rose Higgins is a comportment teacher for ladies of society. She must eke out a living and it's the best way she knows how. Rose faces her most difficult challenge when she is employed to teach the new Viscount Shaw, David. She wants to refuse, but she just cannot turn down the money offered.
David Shaw cares nothing about the title, but he wants to prove to himself and his deceased father that he is good enough to inherit. He is however, a little perturbed when his cousin employs a lady to give him lessons on how to be a proper gentleman. David immediately feels a connection to Rose, and is certain he can teach her a few things as well. Can he give her up when the time comes? Or will he find the nerve to offer her a place by his side?
Author Jess Michaels never fails to write an entertaining read, be it a full length novel or a novella. MY FAIR VISCOUNT certainly helped me while a way an afternoon. I sympathized with David and Rose. Both have complicated pasts, but sharing and overcoming these things will not be easy. It's such a wonderful thing that they were able to confide in one another. Because of it, they are able to establish an even closer connection. I couldn't have paired a better couple than David and Rose. I look forward to reading Ms. Michaels's next novel.
I normally love Jess Michaels but I just could not connect with the key characters in this novel. It is a rags to riches tail following recently discovered Viscount David Shaw, who until recently was living in the Hells.
David's cousin hires a deportment coach to ease David's transition into Society.
For me, it felt like that there was something missing. The story was too predictable. There was a definite need for a subplot to keep the reader interested.
I received this ARC for an honest review from NetGalley.
A delightful romance. Interesting characters. Enjoyed this a lot - will be ordering for the store, so I can handsell to others romance readers!
Rags to riches is David Shaw, living his life in the rookeries and now a viscount. His cousin knows he needs to get his ready to enter society and who better to assist than someone who prepares others. Enter Rose Higgins, a woman who teaches comportment to ladies entering society. The offer to make David acceptable to society is too good to resist. Yet, neither expected for their hearts to be involved. Both have difficult pasts, but have overcome them. Still, they are separated by their social classes and know nothing can come out of it, but cannot deny the passion that exists between them. Will the son commit the sins of the father?
It’s a really sweet and romantic read, I loved the story. The two characters were so lovely, and David made my heart swoon.
David Shaw has just had his life upended when his cousin informs him he's the new Viscount Shaw. Raised in the rookeries, David knows nothing of proper behavior for a member of the ton. Enter Miss Rose Higgins who has been hired to teach him the proper way to do things. These two have an instant spark, but can they work together without giving in to the temptation?
I've read other Ms. Michaels' books and this one is my favorite. Though it is short (too short, I'd love it to be longer), the depth of both David and Rose is well-written. They both have struggled with a difficult childhood and I loved how they revealed deeply held secrets to each other when they finally gave in to their attraction. This is a lovely "My Fair Lady" type plot in reverse and it works.
As is usual, Jess Michaels, always seems to make a novella feel like a full length Novel. She somehow gets the full story in without you feeling cheated.
She picks up on all the little tender moments where you see the relationship build.
This story is an Eliza Doolittle in reverse. The newly found Viscount, David, has been raised on the streets of 7Dials. He has a bit of a cockney accent.
Rose is a finishing coach for young debutantes, ready to make their coming out. She is hired by David's cousin to help him become the Viscount the title deserves .
You see the instant attraction. But you also see the relationship develop between them.
It was a great novella. Short summer read for the beach or pool while on vacation. Enjoy!
I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.
This is my third read by Mrs Jess Michaels, and the two previous were the installment 2&3 in this series.
While the other reads left me with mixed feelings, I just loved this one, my only complain was it was too short but never the characters lacked of depth.
This is a reverse spicy retailing of Pygmalion or My Fair Lady with a new found Viscount featuring Eliza Doolittle’s role, and his name, Shaw, a wink to author of the play.
David had not a nice upbringing so when he is given a way to take revenge from the man who is at the origin of his predicament, he accepts the challenge even if he feels as an outsider, like he will never fit in, he is lost in between two worlds. He is a character with whom I sensed a connection, I understood his struggles.
Rose too was so greatly crafted, while she appeared haughty during their first encounter, she was just putting on a mask, she too was betrayed by those who should have protected her but she rose herself and made a living for herself, why she has so much at stake when her feelings deepen in close contact with David.
I adored watching them grow closer, their relationship was one to admire as they were true to themselves, I was heartbroken for them when they had to part way and admired them for their strength, but I also cheered David after he decided to bend his future on the right path.
Despite its shortness, it was a delightful and heartfelt tale of acceptance.
I was provided an advance copy by Netgalley and the publisher Victory Editing Netgalley Co-Op, I also had my own copy purchased. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
