I always find my self loving historial fiction books. This one was also a beautiful romance story. I absolutely love ho w the story was told, how the character were described and the writing style. Thank you Netgally and t the author forgiving me this opportunity.
The Orphan Thief by Glynis Peters is a heart-wrenching historical tale that totally consumed me.
The novel is set in Coventry during the night of 14th November 1940 and onwards. The reader, along with the characters, watches helplessly on as the medieval city of Coventry is destroyed by German bombers. The smoldering wreck of the cathedral says it all.
Rising from the ashes are the remaining residents of Coventry. Though shocked, the bulldog spirit is alive. Survivors band together making new family units as they learn to live again.
The dead are not forgotten but remembered in hearts all over the city.
There is a wonderful community of love and care for the lost and the vulnerable. Most have good hearts but there are a few who take advantage and prey on the young.
Despite the war, life and love, births, deaths and marriages continue. There are moments that make you smile and moments that make you cry.
The Orphan Thief is a marvellous and powerful read in memory of those residents of Coventry who perished and those who survived.
The city of Coventry is very dear to my heart as I have relatives who lived through the blitz in Coventry but they lost their livelihoods and homes.
Thank you Glynis Peters for a powerful read.
I received a free copy via Net Galley. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this ARC! Unfortunately it wasn’t my favorite book. I’d prefer not to spread negative reviews.
A brilliant read, great read and loved the historical context. Looking forward to reading more from the author in the future!
This book is a blend of historical fiction and romance. The romance isn’t a huge part of the book
This is an engaging book with a good storyline. However I felt lacked some emotion.
I received an advance digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and NetGalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The Orphan Thief is a beautifully written coming of age story set in the bombed out world of England in WWII. The lead character is no longer a child, yet still not truly an adult, she seeks to survive and she is determined that a little boy that she meets will survive as well. Romantic without becoming maudlin, she grows as a person and learns that of everything, love is the most important thing.
4 out of 5 stars. A good, entertaining read.
It's fascinating to travel through yesteryear through books.
This one too me through Britain as a 16 year old girl fights for survival after her whole family is killed by bombs during ww11.

This is a beautiful story of the strength and determination of one girl. Not quite an adult, but no longer a child. I don’t normally read stories about the war but this was a story beautifully told.
Ruby has to grow up fast when the Coventry blitz leaves her an orphan. Ruby is devastated but has to find a way to go on and there are others as lonely and lost as she is. Ruby makes friends and turns into a very resourceful young lady.
The characters were believable and well developed. Although the story was a bit predictable it was still very enjoyable.
In Coventry in 1940 Ruby is running an errand for her mother when the bombs start to fall and so she rushes back home to find that her house and all her family are gone, rushing to her Grans she finds her house has been bombed as well. Desperate not to be put into an orphanage she avoids all of the officials and befriends Tommy....... can she survive in the war torn city?
A good book showing the people helping each other in terrible terrifying times, Ruby was a character that stayed with me long after I finished reading the book
Sadly not for me. I struggled to get into it and therefore unfortunately didn’t enjoy it all that much.
This was the first time I have read anything by this author and I really enjoyed it. It was a good strong story and the book kept my interest. It was interesting reading about Coventry in war time and how war changes community spirit.
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Impulse and Glynis Peters for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review
I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought. The story seemed tilted in some way and I couldn't quite get into it. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.
What I Loved:
The main character, Ruby, is such a strong, fierce person in this story. I admired her strength to go on with loss after loss in her life.
How I Felt:
I really enjoyed the writing in this book, but at times it felt slow. I was hoping for a bit faster pace than what I got. I enjoyed the story-line and the characters. The romance fell a little flat for me, but I still enjoyed it.
Overall, this is a good book for someone who is looking for a historical romance.
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
I adore this author and this book was a brilliant read and one that is perfect to escape for a few hours and loose yourself.
Characters that fall out of the pages of the book and make you fell apart of the story, the setting comes alive and captured is well with words.
A great read. that I would highly recommend.
The story begins in november 1940 when Ruby a 16 year girl is living in coventry. The Germans boomb her town and her family is killed and her home destroyed. She braavely goes looking for others that she knows and a place to stay and hide from futher bombs and destruction. She finds help along the wayand is very ambitious and manages to give homes to others. She finds useful things that have been left behind when families run from the destruction or that are buired under bombed out homes. She sets up her own business to sell the things that she has found. She is a brave and with help. Though intersting this book was hard to read because things like this really happened to familes during the war! It describes the tragdy of wars and the courage of those caught up in them.
I love historical fiction.
This story is about Ruby, who lost her family during a blitz in England. She was out on an errand when she returned, her home was lost.
She went to her Grandmothers and her home was lost too.
Ruby tries to rebuild her life, with the help of her friends
