I am a pre diabetic. I tried some of the recipes for me and my family. Some of them, they enjoyed. Most of the recipes were easy to follow. I will definitely be using those recipes again. Thank you to NetGalley and Callisto Media for the E-ARC. This is my own opinion.
Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. The Prediabetes Action Plan and Cookbook is exactly as described. This is a (relatively) simple and no-nonsense guide to understanding insulin resistance, metabolism, and the implications of how diet and metabolism are interrelated. Author Cheryl Mussatto is a registered dietician with experience in endocrinology and her expertise with the subject matter comes through clearly.
Released 25th June 2019 by Rockridge, it's 164 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
The introductory material and first section define the concepts used throughout the book, explaining metabolic disease in a manner which is non-threatening, layman accessible, and not too technical. The second section includes recipes split into chapters with breakfasts, mains, sides&staples, and desserts. The recipes are appealing, simple, and made with easily sourced ingredients. The end sections include some metric conversions, ingredient information, resource links and more.
It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a no-nonsense 'do-able' plan with included sample menus and recipes. I am very much a blind follower when it comes to recipes and diet plans and this one feels reasonable and achievable. For people with a diagnosis of insulin resistance, this would be a good and positive plan of action.
My only quibbles with the book (and it's almost universal with the newer crop of cookery and lifestyle books the last year) is that there are very few photos of finished dishes and none of recipe preparation. None of the recipes are extremely complex, so the omission isn't crippling. The photos which are included are clear and appealing and are in color (see cover photo for an example). The other potential issue is that this book is aimed at readers who have no complicating factors, such as inflammatory or auto-immune disorders in addition to a diagnosis of pre-diabetes.
Four stars.
This was an interesting book. I thought the information presented was well laid out and flowed well. I really enjoyed reading it and want to try and start implementing some of what I read.
The highlight of this book is that it doesn’t let a prediabetes diagnosis be all doom and gloom. It even includes some goodies like pizza and desserts. It has a nice “how to start” with both dietary changes and increasing movement. Wish there were more pictures of the food like the pretty cookbooks, it this is more a resource for a health condition.
Thanks to the publisher for the digital ARC to review.
I've been working on keeping my prediabetes in check and found this book to be very helpful. Lots of great information and an action plan complete with food suggestions, make this a wonderful resource for those who want to learn more about prediabetes and how to control it. Recommended.
Thank you for making it simple to understand what pre-diabetes is and how with simple changes in your diet and adding exercises will make a dramatic improvement and reverse it. The recipe’s that follow the understanding of the types of foods to eat and avoid, make it so easy to create life changing meal choices. I never knew how much I didn’t know about diabetes and pre-diabetes.
Having diabetes, I was extremely interested in this topic to see what, if any, the differences were between the recommendations in this book and those that I adhere to. Found the information accurate and precise with the menus well thought out and would be rather easy to fit in with most American diets. With making small changes here and there, anyone could follow the ideas. My suggestion for to the author would be to add that the reader should find a local group to get emotional support as well as adding the website of the American Diabetes Association.
I received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for my volunteer review.
A great starter guide for those who have prediabetes or even just want to improve their overall eating and movement habits. The author is a dietitian who has 30 years of health care experience and has worked in an endocrinology clinic. The book has lots of background info on prediabetes and nutrition, how nutrients in food affect blood sugar, and a 2 week meal and movement plan. There is also a chart of how many servings of each food category to aim for and good explanations on what a serving size is, and suggestions on what to stock/what to remove from your pantry and refrigerator/freezer. Then it goes into recipes in chapters on breakfast, mains, sides & staples, and dessert. Recipes sound good and seem fairly simple to prepare, and all include nutritional information. There is also a section in the back of resources with lots of organizations to learn further, and references that the author has used. This is a really good cookbook/guide for those who find themselves with this diagnosis. I just wish there were photos of more of the recipes.
I received an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Take Action Against Diabetes - As a Doctorally prepared Registered Nurse and a Neuroscience Nurse, I have seen too many people suffer the complications from diabetes such as Stroke, Heart Attack and Kidney failure. This book focuses on Prediabetes yet gives a simple yet detailed explanation of the course of disease with easy to understand data and statistics on the prevalence of the disease. The information given is current and emphasizes the most important points. As an RN I want to ensure that the educational material is not only thorough and accurate but also easy to understand. I love the bullet point as a guide on how to speak to your physician and ask the right questions . The recipes included in this book look and sound delicious but simple enough for a week night meal and something if tried a few times could be a regular rotation and staple to a simple and healthy week night meal. I thoroughly enjoyed this informative resources and would highly recommend to anyone who is at risk or has a familial disposition to diabetes. If armed with this knowledge, the book is your tool to reverse or prevent diabetes altogether.
