••I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*.
I have to say that this author is versatile. None of her books that I’ve read have been the same. Which is refreshing.
This book has a lot of things I really love. British humor, snark, awkward interactions, and a woman determined to change her life.
It is not all light and fluffy. Both Chloe and Red have issues that impact their lives. Chronic pain and a former abusive relationship have made each of them hesitant. There are triggers and scars that they have to navigate.
I love that this relationship isn’t all drama or all fluff. The way it develops is authentic and Red is so sweet in his care of Chloe.
Such a good story.
SO much was going on in this book! I expected to be light and funny, which it was! But it was also emotional, fast-paced, and intense too! In all the best ways. I totally connected with the main character and I liked that the male character was realistic and dreamy all at the same time. Great read, I loved it!
This book started strong. I loved the banter between the main couple. Chloe is sassy and can dish it as well as she takes it. However, the story started to slog a bit at the middle and I could barely make it to the end. I think the switch in tone from fun and flirty to serious took my out of the story. By the end it was all melodrama. I know that real life is messy, but the juxtaposition between tone from the beginning of the book to the end was too jarring for me.
Man! Like this book looked good when I saw it. But...man! This book was a contemporary romance phrased like a fantasy novel. There is no way to describe how delicate and descriptive Hibbert is without being floofy. It's like there is one of those magic Cinderella swirls around this couple. And it's so strange, because you get into this book expecting it to be heavy because of all the mental and physical health issues the characters are dealing with. Instead those issues are completely normalized? They don't love each other despite their issues, they love each other fully, issues included. I've been reading a lot of New Adult romantic comedies lately, but this one possesses an effervescent quality. I couldn't put it down.
Seriously one of the sweetest books I’ve ever read. I adore the banter between Chloe and Red A LOT and how they come to love and support each other. I’ve got to incorporate Chloe Brown philosophy into my own life. :) And I don’t think it can ever be overstated how important it is to portray characters who are chronically ill and living their best lives.
Thank you HarperCollins and NetGalley for the ARC!
I did not finish this book. As a librarian I actively seek diverse fiction to recommend to patrons and I just didn't care for this book overall. Dialogue between Chloe and her sisters was so stilted. Everything just felt too forced with Chloe, Red, etc. Like the author was checking boxes. Final straw was the cat rescue/tree climbing scene.
Thanks to Netgalley and to the publisher for sending me an e-galley of this book!
Get a Life, Chloe Brown is a refreshing and hilariously sweet romance that will take your breath away and put a smile on your face. Like it did mine.
The story doesn't pull any punches with Chloe, who is chronically ill suffering from fibromyalgia along with a number of other illnesses that makes the simplest things much harder for her including getting out and living her life. She's written in a way which is real, witty and charming. I could relate to many aspects of her character and the longing need to push yourself out of your comfort zone to reap the rewards that life has to offer.
What I loved most about the book is that both of the characters, both Chloe and the immediately misunderstood Red have real emotional depth and a history that has left way too many marks, emotionally and in one instance, physically. There isn't a miscommunication more than a lingering self doubt that both of the characters work through over the course of the novel that makes it that much more real. Humans, not characters are flawed and carry the weight of pain, emotional and physical and the scars of those wounds will touch whoever they come in contact with.
It's so easy to fall in love with Red and wish for Chloe to be your best friend. A lovely story and a definite 5 star read for me. I'm picking up a finished copy for sure!
A fun, real, honest romance with characters who are struggling to overcome past pain and regret while falling in love. A great and enjoyable read. Thank you!
I picked this up in the middle of the most epic book slump of all time.
And I was charmed, at first. There's a lot to like here and I think under different circumstances it would have worked for me. Alas, I didn't make it all the way through. Another victim of my epic book slump.
I may circle back to this one some other time because all the ingredients are there -- I just couldn't attach or connect with the storyline the way I wanted to.
By now I should know that it is impossible for me to read a book by Talia Hibbert and not be moved to the depths of my soul. She is magic and the words that she writes, the characters and worlds that she creates seem to pluck a string within me that makes everything within me settle and rejoice all at once. Let's not even start on the fact that she builds sexual tension and chemistry and combustion in a way that is somehow simultaneously classy and dirty AF - she has a way of painting a such a vivid and real story that it all seems so very real and I'm left with a feeling of bereft disappointment when I realize that I'm not actually witnessing the goings on of actual people and therefore can not stalk them and ingratiate myself into their lives. From Chloe to Red, Dani and Eve, to Annie and Gigi - every character that graces the page is interesting, engaging, and worthy of a full on novel of their own (and apparently Dani is next in line!). As soon as I finished reading Get a Life, Chloe Brown I wanted to read it again. And I'm pretty sure I will feel that way EVERY time I read it. She gets all the stars, all the wine, all the accolades. I wonder if she's accepting applications for a slightly obsessive, mildly neurotic bestie from across the pond... 5 out of wine glasses.
A satisfying laugh out loud love story about the emotional scars we carry and putting in the work to heal. This book is must read for anyone who likes to watch characters building their confidence and stepping out into the world. Also, for any one who enjoys reading books with 'outrageously ginger' male protagonists. I found myself nodding at the cultural nuggets dropped throughout the book. A solid romance for fans of Alyssa Cole and Jasmine Guillory.
I'm in the process of writing a glowing review for Library Journal, so these are more my raw thoughts. I'm absolutely going to be picking up a finished copy and urge everyone to do so as well!
Such a delight, I'm just so pleased to see one of my favorites get a wide release. Talia Hibbert never shies away from difficult topics but always in a way that never makes you feel despair. Seeing a character with chronic illness get their HEA is important. Seeing a character who is emotionally abused and find their way to therapy and their own HEA is important. Seeing people who are very much like us, very much different than us, or a mix of both, is important. Talia Hibbert does all of this with sparkling wit, humor, and sensitivity.
Talia provides CW at the beginning of her books, but the ones that stood out to me I've described above.
GET A LIFE, CHLOE BROWN is tied for favorite of the four titles I read for Book Buzz.
The novel follows our titular character, Chloe Brown; Chloe is chronically ill and, after her last stint in the hospital, she decides to create a step-by-step list in order to, finally, get a life. The first step? Move out of her parents’ mansion in the suburbs. After acquiring her first apartment, however, Chloe is stymied – but happily ropes her tall and mysteriously brooding neighbor, Redford “Red” Morgan, into checking off items on her quest to Get a Life. But Red has his own issues and secrets, including Chloe’s casual reliance on her wealthy parents.
GET A LIFE, CHLOE BROWN was fun, quirky, and insightful. Chloe had a complete arc within the novel, which I appreciated, and you could see her character growth as she was exposed to new things. Red’s character was the perfect balance for Chloe – and was just the right dose of blue-collar realism this book needed.
This book reminded me of all the best parts of BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY meets WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER meets JUST FRIENDS. Read-alikes for this title would be PRIDE, PREJUDICE, AND OTHER FLAVORS by Sonali Dev & Jasmine Guillory THE WEDDING DATE series.
Special thanks to NetGalley, Talia Hibbert, and Avon for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
As a first time reader of Talia Hibbert, I went into this romance with no expectations and came out a TOTAL FAN of Talia Hibbert. Get A Life, Chloe Brown provides so much joy. I could not stop laughing or smiling throughout the entire story. The plot put a huge smile on my face for days.
After a near death experience, Chloe Brown who is chronically ill with Fibromyalgia, contemplates what her obituary would say. This promptly inspires her to write a bucket list that will force her to start living. I never laughed so hard during an epilogue. I know it sounds a bit weird laughing at a near death experience, but Talia Hibbert's writing is pure comedic genius.
Chloe (it is really hard for me to refer to her as just Chloe / I want to call her Chloe Brown all the time) is my kind of heroine. She's sarcastic and funny. She's kind of a little rude but doesn't really mean to be. She has been dealt some tough cards in her life which has forced her to build walls with everyone except her family. Chloe Brown is a strong, determined female. She is awe-inspiring.
The first chapter begins with Chloe living in her own flat where she begins to have awkward moments with the building supervisor, Redford.
Red is a total gingerish hottie who is also a bit down on life, He is a little stuck and is unsure how to get out of his rut. He almost seems fine being stuck. Whereas Chloe is very self aware of her issues, Red is not.
Initially, Chloe and Red cannot stand each other and I am all about it. Their personal prejudices hold them back from becoming friends. To make matters "worse", they are both equally appalled to find themselves secretly attracted to each other, leading right into a perfect enemies to lovers, slow burn set up.
I swooned hard when Chloe and Red became more. Their story is so beautiful. They both overcome so much. But the most stunning aspect is that although Chloe may have been the one trying to get a life, she gives new life to Red, too.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown is a must read. Hysterically funny. Delightful. Extremely clever. Inspiring. If Chloe Brown can get a life, so can you! I now must go buy myself a paperback copy so that I can spread it all around Instagram.
Side note: Talia Hibbert, your novel dedication is beautiful.
GET A LIFE CHLOE BROWN is a rom-com with more heart than most, because of the special heroine.
Hibbert deals with a relatively unknown but looming issue in society, silent chronic illness delicately and sweetly.
It was clever to make the typically handsome love interest vulnerable as well, so that the heroine was not 'saved' but they helped each other.
I'm glad Hibbert is writing another book with these characters, and I hope there is a lot of Chloe in it. She is like a modern Mary Poppins, feigning dismay at the fun her and her companions are having.
Loooved this book! The characters were amazing, the dialogue was great, and it was overall a great read. If you’re looking for a cute rom com with some emotional depth, read this book!
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a hilarious, sweet romance between two broken characters that learn to accept their differences and find love through their imperfections. Chloe suffers from chronic pain and has lived a life of seclusion and pain. She decides to make a list of things she wants to do in order to feel alive. She builds a tentative friendship with Red who is quietly infactuated with her and also feeling stuck in his life. Slowly they overcome their own fears and through quirky banter fall in love. Loved it because the dialogue is incredibly fresh and uniquely funny. The characters flawed but sarcastically refreshing. A must buy.
This book was an absolute joy to read. Chloe and Red are fantastic characters, and the author did such a fantastic job fleshing them both out and seeing how the two of them fill each other's gaps. It took my a bit to warm up to Chloe, and I think that was because she's so utterly British, but the more you see things from her point of view, you cannot help but love her. You see her growth as a person from Chloe at the beginning of the book to Chloe at the end of the book. You can see it, this transformation into what Chloe wants to become. You cannot help but root for her while rolling your eyes are her ridiculously posh-ness. She is bossy and demanding, but not in that "Ugh what a witch" kind of way. She knows what she wants, how she wants it, and she will go for her when she is ready to. She doesn't allow her illness to hold her back any longer.
Red has become my favorite male character this year so far. He is wonderful. He is not without his own issues, and you see how they've affected his life just as Chloe's issues affected hers. We see the effects of an abusive relationship, and I LOVE that the author chose to have the point of view from a male survivor of an abusive relationship. How the automatic negative thoughts take hold when you've been told you're nothing over and over again. The great thing about this novel is that Red recognizes this and seeks out treatment. And when he tells Chloe, she praises him for doing what he needed to do to get mentally healthy. And how he works with Chloe and her chronic pain, ensuring her needs are being met and that she is comfortable just melts this cold heart over and over again. I know in every romance novel, the two characters are going to end up together. Talia does it in a way that you just feel that these two were destined for each other. There was no one else on this planet for Red or for Chloe.
I love that this book had a plus-size MC with a disability and was a Black woman. We don't see that a lot of the time. But these things were not what Chloe was. She was so much more, and that was also what was refreshing about this book. Her size wasn't talked about at all. It didn't have any bearing on her chronic pain. It was just the way it was, and homegirl owned her body and knew she was stunning and sexy. I was a little worried that she would be fetishized by Red, but no, he genuinely found her sexy even she was sick, because Chloe is who she is. The way he worshiped her body made this plus-size reader swoon just a little bit.
This is a romance novel, and there are sexy scenes in it, and they were glorious. Not too raunchy, but not vanilla either. The scenes were sexy, sweet, and perfect.
I cannot recommend strong enough to go buy this book when it comes out. It will be absolutely worth it, and I know I will to add it to my collection.
I was given this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
It was a little slow at the beginning but it picked up and became so wonderful. I've always heard amazing things about Hilbert's writing and characters and they were not wrong. Chloe is an amazing character, living with an invisible chronic illness that wasn't believed and now is making a bucket list to get her "life" back together. Red is just a precious cinnamon roll boi that wasn't treated well in that past. But these two are just so great with each other. Can't wait to read more books from Hilbert.
Description from back of book:
Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?
Enjoy a drunken night out.
Ride a motorcycle.
Go camping.
Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
And... do something bad.
But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.
Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.
But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…
I’m in love with this one. This is my first book from this author and she definitely has my attention now. This book was filled with witty and funny anecdotes that caught even me by surprise. I could say I really understood Chloe’s apprehension after everything she’s been through. It’s always beautiful watching/reading anyone take back their lives. And boy, did she?! And Red was everything! Hahaha. He paid attention, noticed things people would not, and always had a great comeback. And even though he had a bit of hang up about his past relationship which is very understandable. I thought who he was, was a great pairing with Chloe.
You are definitely going to love this one.
Hope you enjoy.
And as always Happy Reading!
