I did not finish - I have tried reading this book on multiple occasions and just could not get into it.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This cute interactive story is great for young readers. I love the bright pictures. Great for teaching prepositions.
This is a very simple book, but done well. It has simple sentences, colourful pictures, a fun message about playing with friends and teaches about positional prepositions. The premise is strong, and the concepts are clear. Each time a character hides, the others go looking for them UNDER, BESIDE, INSIDE, OVER, etc. The illustrations clearly show the meaning of each of those words, so beginning readers would be able to use picture clues to help decode the new vocabulary. My three year old granddaughter counted together, and did a search for the animals before they were revealed. She enjoyed this story a lot. My one concern is that there appears to be a missing page and she noticed it. I hope this is corrected in the final copy, as we read an ARC. The page with owl taking a turn being "it" starts counting at 5, and it does not follow the pattern for the rest of the story. Overall, this was a successful reading experience for this grandma and granddaughter.
I would use this book with the older toddlers I teach in order to help them learn their positional words. It is nice short phrases with animals as the characters and pictures that show what the meaning is of each positional word . I also think that it shows that kindness should be a common thing through the use of hugs each time they find a friend.
My 4 year old LOVED this book. She wants to do it over and over. The pictures are bright and colorful . This simple book has lovely illustrations and nice bright colors. When my grandkids came I read it to them. They are 1 and 2. It was a huge hit with them also. Def a 5 star book.
Thanks to Kids Can Press and NetGalley for the provided e-ARC and the opportunity to read this book. My review is honest, unbiased, and voluntary
A cute little story that uses positional words in a game of hide and seek. The illustrations are eye-catching, and the story is a perfect length for twos and threes, who are just starting to use positional words.
It is a very cute book that will resonate well with young children. Besides positional words, this book offers counting and a familiar game of hide and seek. And, of course, the hugs are always appreciated!
Thanks so much Netgalley for having me review this book. It was such a joy to share this book with my little one. Plus it gave an approach to educating kids on position words. Overall, I recommend this to parents who are teaching their children for the first time, plus this was such a fun book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley!
adorable kids book.
we loved the illustrations.
the story was unique & easy to read!
Fox, bear and owl play hide and seek. Where could owl be? Is he beside the slide? No, he’s in the tube slide! Where is bear? Is he in front of the climbing wall? No, he’s behind the climbing wall. This is a cute and gentle introduction to prepositions, perfect for toddler - preschool age. The three friends enjoy one another’s company and share hugs afterward. The illustrations are warm and endearing.
I was provided a digital ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I've noticed that a lot of board books are way too long for the little guys that would benefit most from them. I liked the short, simple sentences in this one. I was thrilled with it as a possible addition to our board book collection (I'm not even sure it's going to be a board book) until the second round of hide and seek started. I think it stretches on a little too long for bitty ones. It's appropriate for the preschool crowd, though. My three year old enjoyed it. She loved finding the animals that were hiding before the one 'that was seeking. The only problem we ran into was some confusion over owl being ON the slide. She didn't interpret the shelter above the slide as being on the slide itself and she wasn't able to find him without some help.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This easy to read picture book includes three friends playing hide and seek and points out the position words like In, On, Out, etc.
Cute fun story about an animal and all his friends playing a game of hide and seek in the woods. Great book for a kindergartner
This is a cute picture book that teaches positional prepositions while telling the story of three animal friends playing hide-and-seek. The premise is strong, and the concepts are pretty clear. Each time a character hides, the others go looking for them UNDER, BESIDE, INSIDE, OVER, etc. The illustrations clearly show the meaning of each of those words.
The pictures are simple, but cute and effective. I think the main issue I have with this book is that there appears to be a page missing. Each of the three animals takes a turn at counting and seeking, but when it's Owl's turn to count, we only see the second half of his count. The page that should be there (if it's consistent with the other two seekers) would read: Owl counts. "1, 2, 3, 4 ..." Unfortunately, this page appears to be missing. (I am reading an ARC, so hopefully this will be fixed in the final edition.)
Aside from the missing page, I think this is a great book for teaching positional prepositions. It's clear, it's enjoyable to look at, and it makes it fun to search for the characters as they hide (you can just see them, if you look closely).

4 stars.
Wow. This was so good for a few reason. It was fun. It was easy to follow. It teaches children what positional prepositions are and it is really very cute. I love how they give each other hugs once they have been found while playing hide-and-seek. It's very loving and comforting and that adds such a nice touch to this book. The illustrations are colourful and basic yet descriptive enough for very young children to be attracted to them. This is a perfect book to read to your child and you can have fun and play with them at the same time. I definitely would have liked this as a child.
Hide-and-Seek is the only First Book of Position Words you’ll ever need, and definitely the cutest.
Join three friends—Bear, Owl, and Fox—as they play Hide-and-Seek at a playground in the woods. Using the slide, swings, and trees, R. D. Ornot deftly weaves the prepositions into their game. The position words fit the story naturally, without seeming forced. A climbing wall, a bench, a tunnel, and a bridge provide more hiding places for their game.
Hide-and-Seek with Bear, Owl, and Fox is polite and fair. Young readers can play along, as Sakshi Mangal’s fantastic illustrations contain clues about where the animals might be hiding. The trio take turns being the Seeker, and when Bear feels he’s looked everywhere for his friends, he gives up and sits on the bench. Fox and Owl race toward him, one on each side, and give him a much-needed bear hug. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book; well done!
