Kelly finally has the life she always wanted; beautiful twin daughters, a baby son and a husband who adores her as much as she does him. So what if she needs to count her steps, bargain with herself as to what will or won't happen if she doesn't reach a pre-set target in time, that's normal with a new baby who cries alot, it's just a stress reliever, isnt it?
Her daughters are starting school, a new chapter has begun in her life but then things begin to happen which she can't explain, but knows could easily be down to her forgetfulness but what if they aren't? There are secrets she has been keeping from husband, Mitch, and she is responsible for a tragedy from when she was only fourteen but telling him would ruin everything forever.
This is an entertaining psychological thriller with the desire to have a normal, happy, family life at its core. There are flashbacks but they slide effortlessly into the gaps in the present day narrative giving it depth and clarity and fleshing out Kelly and her childhood memories. The relationships are well done and the twins were endearingly and realistically drawn, The ending was unexpected, but still satisfying and to me, at least, kept true to the main message I took from the book as a whole.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a psychological thriller slightly less tension filled and heart stopping than some, with a positive message at its heart.
I really liked this book. I thought the way the chapters alternated between past and present really racked up the tension. Every time we ventured into the past we learned a little more about Kelly's childhood and the effect Freya had on her life. The only thing I didn't understand was why she had never talked to Mitch about her past especially as it explained so much about her personality and insecurities. I will watch out for this author in the future.

Kelly wishes for a sister and on her birthday that wish comes true with the arrival of the elusive Freya who her parents are foatering. Tragedy strikes and Kelly leaves her childhood behind and marries Mitch. Three children later Kelly is struggling with lack of sleep with her young baby and strange things are happening. Who’s in danger?
I loved Wendy’s first book and was over the moon to read the second and it did not disappoint. Brilliant work. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This book had a bit of slow start and isn’t exactly what I’d call a thriller all the way. Though there are moments of tension but it takes awhile to get there. It’s told from the perspective of Kelly when she was young and Kelly now. Kelly has just had her third child and is acting paranoid so much so that her own husband chalks it up to being tired or overwhelmed by motherhood. But Kelly thinks someone is watching her and messing with her. Is she right? Or are we reading through the perspective of an unreliable narrator? Well, once we delve deeper into the past, painful secrets are exposed and that’s really when things got interesting to me! I began to feel paranoid myself! I’d definitely recommend this book. It didn’t have the typical twists and I found the plot unique. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced ebook in exchange for an honest review!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this Arc.
This psychological thriller had me on the edge of my seat and my heart pounding throughout!!
From suspected murder to manipulation to kidnapping you definitely won't be disappointed!!
I would highly recommend it.
We Were Sisters is set in two timelines- one when Kelly was a young girl living at home with her parents and meeting the children they fostered, especially Freya, and the other when Kelly is herself a wife and Mum to twin girls and a young baby boy, Noah.
A troubled and traumatic past still haunts and affects Kelly in her every day life, so much so she doesn't know if the things that suddenly seem to be happening to her are real or imagined. Plenty of twists and an ending I hadn't seen coming.
Another great novel from Wendy Clarke , a compelling and enjoyable read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy for my honest review.
Drew me right in from the first pages Kelly turns her back on her babies carriage for a second &in that second her baby disappears.Found just a little while later time full of terror & then when the baby is found there’s a locket in the carriage and this multi layered story full of twists and turns takes off.A book that kept me up late guessing to the end.#netgalley #bookouture.
my 1st book buy this author and so enjoyed 2 girls both want to be loved so different a selfish mother the story goes back and forth very twisty and very emotional one of these girls will do anything to protect her children this book keeps you wanting to read till the last page I so loved this story highly recommend
Haunting psychological suspenser which tells the tale of damaged children who grow into damaged adults. There are surprises and twists but mostly it's a human story about love and loss and the need to belong.
We Were Sisters by Wendy Clarke is another page-turner from an author whose books I will jump at any opportunity to read. This one did not disappoint, and kept me fully engaged until the final page. I must admit, though, that the ending is a tad anticlimatic after a highly suspenseful buildup but, nonetheless, this is one that will keep you guessing.
Kelly, a wife and mother is struggling to reconcile herself with the events of her past which continue to haunt her. A troubled relationship with her mother, and a shocking discovery when she was fourteen have led Kelly to want to distance herself from her childhood as much as possible. But when someone appears to be leaving warnings that suggest that the events of the past are far from forgotten, Kelly is pulled back into a nightmare that she believes is of her own making.
This is a compelling read that held me engrossed throughout. I will continue to seek Ms Clarke's work out in future.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
Loves this book. The story, the characters were all fab. Gripping and well written. Another great author to add to my list of must reads. A brilliant book.
This was a really goody mystery thriller that grabbed me from the first page. I really felt for kelly and I liked the dual timeline as it seemlessly wove the storyline together. Thank you for the chance to review this title.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with an early copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own and have not been influenced by this opportunity.
What an amazing breath of fresh air!!
I've been waiting so long for a book like this and I'm so grateful to the publisher for the privilege of receiving an electronic ARC.
Let me start out by saying that this book is very well written. The characters had agency, the stakes were high and the setting very well described.
It was a very interesting read. I like that it's fast-paced. I think I might have finished this book in one or two days.
I want to thank NetGalley, Wendy Clarke and Bookouture for an Arc of we were sisters. I was definitely intrigued when I saw the cover and it said she lied, she died. Psychological thrillers is one of my favorite types of books to read. When I read the story plot it seemed a lot different then what I had imagined but it still sounded really good.
The story starts out with Kelly taking her twin daughters to school. She has her newborn Noah with her as well in the stroller. She turns away for a moment to see her twins off and turns around to find Noah gone. Panic ensues and Noah is quickly found in front of another classroom unharmed but there is a locket tucked into the stroller with Noah that belonged to her dead sister Freya. From here Kelly's life starts to unravel.
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was filled with a really good amount of twists and secrets to make you keep turning the pages. Check this one out!
We Were Sisters by author Wendy Clarke was a good book. Wasn’t anything to scream from rooftops but it wasn’t a bad book and it didn’t disappoint at all. I would still recommend it, all the components are there!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
I loved What She Saw so when I saw Wendy had wrote We Were Sisters I knew I had to read this!
Kelly is haunted by her past, especially by her foster sister Freyas death. Apart from some obsessive OCD counting it’s all in her past though....isn’t it?
Maybe my expectations were a little high going into this book but it didn’t do anything for me. The story was slow with little tension and I found myself bored and unable to draw myself into this world. Obviously there’s twists but nothing groundbreaking, absolutely nothing that made me feel it was worthwhile reading We Were Sisters.
It’s possibly also one of the most anticlimactic endings I’ve ever read in a thriller as well. This book could have been so much more and I’m really disappointed it wasn’t.
Kelly is panic stricken when her infant disappears when she turns away for a moment. The baby is found safe and sound in her stroller, but with the baby is a locket. One that Kelly has seen since her sister Freya died. This book is incredibly suspenseful and kept me guessing until almost the very last page
