I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.
This has been on my TBR pile for so long, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really enjoyed the storyline and seeing the characters change throughout the story was a great character development. The plot was great and kept my attention. I'm glad I got the chance to read this and will be on the lookout for more in the future!
Now this was an interesting story! Coin is nameless, so really she lives on the street, the laws don't apply to her and spends her days pickpocketing and sleeping on the streets. So really it's just another day for her until one of her friends gets caught and she steps in to save her in the name of the queen.
Yup, that's right, Coin now has a tattoo which makes her queen. But how? She doesn't have a name, how could anyone speak her name and give her this tattoo and its real. Because if she was caught with a fake one, whelp that would just be the end of that.
Now what? The council doesn't like her, she has these newfound powers/magic she needs to learn and harness as she becomes more powerful and she may even lose it all at the upcoming tournament. Oh but that isn't all, the nameless have been going missing and as queen you think it would be fairly easy to get her friend out of the prison right? Well that was a journey in it self right there.
As the story builds, there are twists, surprises, good friends and a list of enemies. But the ending was truly lovely and it was amazing to see that the nameless can finally have a place in this world and Coin is going to make huge changes and progress in a kingdom that really needed it.
Nameless Queen just did not do it for me. There was a lot to like about Coin, except the longer the book went on the less believable and the more contrived the whole plot felt. It was almost too convenient. I was bought into the idea, but I think the book suffered from execution.
I read this book awhile back but, I can still remember it like it was yesterday. This intense novel is about a girl who has to make a choice that could mean life or death for her. I read this book in one sitting and absolutely loved every minute of it. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Highly recommend to any YA fantasy lovers.
Unfortunately, this wasn't wholly to my taste. I really loved the premise, but the execution was a little boring. I read the Dutch translation, and although I haven't read the original, I do think the translation was done a bit poorly. I might have enjoyed it better in its original form.
This was a very interesting premise, but I did not think it was executed well. The world-building needs to be more detailed because it was incomprehensible. I found the main character to be uninteresting and found the other characters to be more fascinating than her. The plot was also very rushed. Thus, this would have been better if it was slower and focused on the world-building and the main character.
I thought this book was good. It was not great but it was not bad either. I thought the writing was okay and the descriptions of the world building could have been a little better. I also really enjoyed the characters and the storyline. It was pretty fast paced and I flew through the book. I will probably read more by this author.
I'm currently clearing out all of the books that were published in 2019-20 from my title feedback view!
Ugh, I wanted to love this book, I really did but it just fell flat for me. The world building was lacking and the characters were flat. The magic system was a bit inconsistent and not explained well.
A young adult political fantasy that falls flat. The description had me very excited. It was going to be an exciting ride and yet it was unoriginal and been there done that. Sorry to say.
I really wanted to like this, because I head so much about it and others that I know and trust enjoyed it. But YA/Fantasy hasn't been working out for me these days and I just couldn't do it.
All I will say that it takes a really fun, unique, and exciting plot for me to get over fake cursing. Just no. Teens can curse too. That writing was so distracting that I quit around 15%
This reminded me a bit of Three Dark Crowns! And that cover is gorgeous! I loved the world and the characters and would love to revisit someday!
I don't think I see YA novels as I've seen them when I first introduced myself with the genre.
It just doesn't feel right. For it's demographic, I think that this novel will better be suited for lovers of YA but not necessarily of fantasy. It just doesn't connnect.
Good book, would read again. I actually read this a long time ago, so I don't really remember all the specifics.
I had always told myself that I would come back to this book, because I had started it, but I honestly never have. Because I don’t remember finding it interesting. If a book does not capture me within like the first 10%, the chances of me continuing are minimal. It felt too much like every other YA fantasy book, and I am desperately craving something new.
I got sucked in and read Nameless Queen in less than 48 hours. Gorgeous worldbuilding and unforgettable characters. Will be purchasing for the library's YA collection.
Fake cursing and bad ending aside, this wasn't a bad book. It was nice to read a YA fantasy with no romance aspect to it. I feel like nothing really got tied up at the end which is frustrating but for a standalone fantasy novel, the book delivers the necessary triumph and leaves loose ends in case the author wants to return to the world. I'd love a back story book on Glenquartz or something about Hat or even just the Nameless themselves. I think they were more interesting than Coin's entire arc but overall, a decent story.
Nameless Queen by Rebecca McLaughlin is a standalone fantasy. At least, I haven't heard that there will be other books, although the potential for more is there. Coin has lived a life based on survival and self preservation, and she's good at it. I have so many "Why?" questions upon finishing this story. Why was the magic bound to those with the tattoo? Why doesn't magic effect the Nameless? Why is this world the way it is? Why? Why? Why? I needed more world building and in some cases, character building as well. I think that would have been a great way to answer some of these questions. I loved Coin's sarcasm and spunk. The emphasis on family was pretty nice too. Not to mention the premise, which is what led me in to begin with. There was a lot to offer here, but I needed a bit more to truly grasp and connect with what was going on.
This was nearly a DNF but I skimmed the last half or so to make sure it didn't improve before giving my final rating. This started with a strong and promising premise, but unfortunately, that's where my praise ends. The names were so ridiculous they were distracting, the worldbuilding was thrown together and sorely lacking, and I wasn't able to form a connection to a single character. In addition, while there's the appearance of conflict, the struggles to overcome any barriers are practically non-existent. After the first (or second or third...) instance of this, it became difficult for me to feel invested or gripped by a desire to see it resolved because it quite clearly would be, with the main character discovering yet another before-now unknown skill. Two stars for the above-mentioned issues and because it was readable enough that I was able to finish.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy. This did not affect my review.
