A lot of my friends are fasting now and losing weight. I hoped this book would be a great place to start, and I was right about that. I like that the author covered this topic throughly. From health benefits to how to actually do this he covered every detail. The books is eay to read, as well as understand, and the recipes that were included are a definite bonus.
As far as healthy living and diets are concerned, this book is one of the best I have read!
All books by DR Mosley are easy to read and follow. Have since purchased hard copy and recipe book! All makes sense, ensure you get your nutrients and be in a caloric deficit.
I am interested in food and my relationship with it and how it impacts on my body, so I am happy to recommend this book to people who are looking to reset their relationship with food and to understand the effects of food on ourselves.
Dr. Mosley writes in easily understood manner and for the most part avoids lecturing or haranguing people about their bad food choices, he has been there himself he knows the guilt and the regret.
This won't be for everybody but it can help you to evaluate where you are in terms of food and lifestyle.
Like most diet books you are walked through why people gain weight, the science behind intermittent fasting, and there are some recipes mixed in. While you may lose weight quickly the key to keeping it off is making this a lifestyle and not just a simple diet. You also need to increase your activity and focus on the foods you eat. In the end, this is just another diet book with a few helpful insights.
This was a great read. A twisty psychological thriller that had me turning the pages. I read it in two days, and was desperate to know the outcome. Recommended.
The Fast800 Diet: Discover the Ideal Fasting Formula to Shed Pounds, Fight Disease, and Boost Your Overall Health contains some great information on the benefits of intermittent fasting. IF helps to improve blood sugar levels, heart health and boosts brain health and function. Dr. Mosley’s plan is built around a calorie count of 800 calories. There are different phases in the program to assist in following the plan. Also, included are recipes and four weeks of meal plans. This was a great tool for me. I just wish that it was not referred to as a diet but instead, a lifestyle or meal plan. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
Another diet book I'll probably forget about soon. There was just so much writing in this book and I felt it needed more recipes, but overall its an interesting concept and took a lot of info away from it.
I felt it was very similar to previous books in the fast series. I like the style Michael writes in and always find his books easy to read. This has the up to date information about the fast diet and it does work if you follow.
The Fast800 Died puts science and weight loss into terms almost anyone should be able to understand!
The author did a wonderful job making this book easy to read. Motivated to try!
If any of you have watched Michael Mosley you will be familiar with his down to earth and personable style, his books are no different.
The concept is very approachable and is based around intermittent fasting, the currently popular Keto diet and the healthy Mediterranean diet. He starts by explaining the ideas and science behind his diet and his experience as his very own test subject. Not only did he lose a substantial amount of weight but more importantly he managed to reverse his risk of developing diabetes. The second part of the book is made up of recepies, not totally unrealistic food but tasty nourishing food.
I have actually re-watched the episode covering this diet and also purchased the Fast exercise book which is also excellent and based on the high intensity from of exercise, they work together as a pair to encourage me to stick to my New Years resolution of getting fit and healthy. (If I can't succeed using this then there's really no hope for me)
If you are looking to lose some weight, improve your health and hopefully live longer then you won't regret buying this book thats five stars from me!
Thank you Netgalley, Atria Books and Dr Michael Mosley for giving me the opportunity to read this arc.
I have for awhile now done time restricted eating ("TRE") and had heard of the 5:2 program but was never very interest because it restricts down to 500 calories. This plan is very interesting in that it comes with three parts; first you TRE and also restrict to 800 calories daily for a period of several weeks to kick start the process. Then you go to a 5:2 process but restricting only to 800 calories. Once you have achieved your goal you go to maintenance.
Mosley spends a good portion of the book talking about the research behind this plan and the elements that make it up. This helps lend credibility to the Fast800 plan. I think that if this type of diet is something that interests you this one might be more doable than some others.
This book was easy to read and understand, the science was explained in a digestible manner. Whilst I understand the principles I do worry about this method being misinterpreted. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
While this had great information, I fell like it lacked a certain pizzazz. I would have liked it to be a little less like a text book and more welcoming and encouraging.
I have read his other books and so I was interested to see if there were any different takeaways from this book. I am vegan and a firm believer in fasting not only for weight loss but for health. The plan works if you work it, but there is relevant and important information for anyone who is a beginner to fasting and was afraid to try it. The 800 calorie restriction is much more doable and less frightening than the previous number of 5oo calories cited in 5:2 fasting. Of course the key is sticking to the plan for results, but it is a good guide for those beginning the fasting journey.
I can not argue with something that is supported by science. However, I have not tried this diet. The author does make this book seem pretty motivating. I have a hard time sticking to any kind of diet and I don't know that I would have self control with this one. YIKES!
I was given an ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
Although I found this book informative, it is written in a way that is so boring.
It reads as a text book, I understand that the point is that is is scientific and important, but it is so boring to read. no pictures, no pops of colour to keep you wanting to read more.
I love the proposed idea. just let down by the execution.
Title: The Fast 800 Diet by- Dr. Michael Mosley
Health/Fitness
My Rating 5🌟
Excellent book! Thought it was an interesting conflate of: nutrition, and exercise Dr. Mosley well researched and broke down in layman's terms for readers.
His approach is not too unusual; I've heard of Intermittent Fasting before. Heard and actually tried some of the workouts he'd mentioned in the book. This book was less of fad and more a realistic way to approach a problem, with real solutions. That in mind, nothing is magic. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Which means there's work to do. Work 'I' must do if I expect change. Like anything worth having you must have faith, and work for it. Which is what I intend to do. After reading TF 800 Diet I'm compelled to try again. Clean slate. No backtracking. Only forward and upward I go.
*I recieved this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review *
I started this diet on the 24th June 2019. And I just can’t praise it enough. It was the right diet at the right time.
When I first started I stuck to the 800 kcals. I soon discovered this wasn’t enough (more on this at the end). Over the months I’ve adapted this to suit and I now have the perfect diet for me.
I’ve lost 31lbs in 6 months and after the first couple of weeks it was easy. This includes 3 holidays and more meals and nights out than I can count. Losing weight is all about finding the right diet for you and this is it for me.
While I may not follow the book exactly as it’s written. My diet today is a result of this and there’s no going back.
Original review.
The 5:2 or in my case the 4:3 diet has worked really well over the last couple of years. It’s the only diet I’ve found that allows me to lose weight but still have a social life.
While the 500 days are hard the results make it worth it. It’s a shame I don’t do it all the time. Life gets in the way usually in the form of holidays and then I’m gone. It’s then a case of getting back on track which gets pushed back. You know how it is.
I was intrigued when I noticed this book. Mainly because 800 calories sounds a whole lot better than 500.
This book is well written, clear and simple to read. Examples and data are given to back everything up.
This book really is the best of all worlds.
It explains the advantages of following an 800 calorie diet. How you can fit it into a 5:2 if that works better for you. It also covers the TRE (time restricted eating).
This was the right book at the right time for me. I’m now following an 800 calorie 2:5 or 3:4 diet (depending on what’s happening certain weeks). I’m also using the 14:10 or 16:8 (all calories are consumed with a 10 or 8 hour period) TRE.
This book was fabulous.
#### UPDATE 29th DECEMBER 2019 ####
This diet has become a way of life for me.
I aim to have 5 diet days a week. And when I started that was the case. This is because I have lunch plans every Tuesday and Thursday. On these “off” days I eat and drink whatever I like.
Obviously other things come up and some weeks I end up with only two diet days. It depends on what’s happening. I no longer get hung up on these days. I’ve been doing the diet long enough now that I don’t seem to put weight on even on really bad weeks. This doesn’t include holidays. But I’ve found that two weeks back on my plan and I lose all the holiday weight anyway. This gives me the freedom to have two weeks off at a time and not worry about my weight. I truly can enjoy my holidays I just accept that on the Monday after I’m back on the plan.
The plan for me involves eating between 1200 and 1500 kcals on my diet days. I eat good food and make all my calories count. Because my “off” days are just that. I have whatever I want and as much as I want.
You may be wondering (if you’ve made it this far) why 800 kcals isn’t enough yet I did the 500 kcal 4:3 diet perfectly well on and off for years. That’s because with the 4:3 I’d split my days. I never did consecutive days which made it easier. But when I started this my first week I had fri, sat, sun and mon on 800 kcals. Monday night I was so hungry I felt weak and fatigued and realised that 800 kcals just wasn’t enough for me. Initially increased it to 1000 temporarily but I was still losing weight. I wanted to keep my metabolism up and found I was losing weight on 1200 to 1500 kcals so this is what I stick to.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley.
Full of strong references and actionable information.
Recommended reading for those who are interested in a healthy, calorie-restricted diet designed to yield quick results.
It’s almost time for a new year and a new decade! It is also time for me to try once again to lose some weight in the new year. The Fast800 Diet is an unpdate of the author’s previous two books—The FastDiet and The Eight-Week Blood Sugar Diet.
In the original FastDiet, the fasting diet calorie level was 500 calories. That was too low for many larger people. This new diet allows fasts with 800 calories a day. There are, however, some additional rules for what can make up those calories. Each day must incorporate 50-60 grams of protein. Carbs must be cut to allow for a ketosis state to begin such as that seen on the Keto and Atkins diet.
The book contains some Mediterranean diet recipes and meal plans. The author also includes three new trends in dieting on his new plan. First, participants should kick off their diet with periodic fasting for at least five days. This should be repeated every few months. During the plan, two days of every seven day week should be with the lowered fasting calorie count of 800, which the author labels the 5:2 plan. Finally, if you narrow your eating window gradually from twelve to eight hours a day, you will lose even more weight. And this diet is built for quick weight loss to keep the dieter motivated. The book states that you can lose up to 11 pounds in two weeks if you can keep up the periodic fasting that long. It doesn’t specify how much you will lose once you convert to the 5:2 plan.
There are many scientific studies referenced within The Fast800 Diet. Just from my own experience in grad school, I bet if you looked, you would find just as many studies proving the exact opposite of what is advocated here. However, bottom line is “Will it work for me?” If you think it will, or are at least willing to try it for a few weeks, it will probably cause you to lose weight. I think I might try it. I’ll let you know if it goes well. If nothing gets added to this review by mid-February, assume that I returned to the slow, boring but steady WW (formerly Weight Watchers) plan. We’ll see. 4 stars (if it works, I’ll up it to 5)!
