HInestly, I requested the book because my mom is very much into this stuff and she is always talking about intermittent dieting, so I was especially interested in this type of diet when I got the book.
I found it to be very informative and easy to understand, I'm not sure allt he types of diets are for me but there are definitley some I am interested in. Now it is all about applying it to my daily life!
Read the book, learn the recipes, apply, digest.
Now the hard work, commitment, and willpower starts.
Simples!!!

This is an excellent book on the different types of intermittent fasting and a couple of different diets. Dr Mosley does an great job explaining various studies that back up his teachings. He also explains how these options can reverse diseases and overall improve health, not just for weight loss.
If you haven't heard of intermittent fasting, TRE (time restricted eating, which is a form of IF) and the link between carbohydrates and weight gain, then this book provides comprehensive and convincing imformation, all based on medical studies. Michael Mosley is not one to base his recommendations on anecdotal evidence.
If you have been interested in IF, TRE and low-carbohydrate eating, then not much here will be new to you, but if you are like me, and you can use frequent reminders to help you stick to a lifestyle, then sure, this book will help cement your convictions and won't be a waste of your time. Dr. Mosley's writing is very accessible and entertaining. The recipe section comprises almost half of the book and there's a short section at the end with information on the Scientific Method.
I tried to follow Dr. Mosley's original 5:2 approach, but I found it very hard to stick to eating only 500 Kcal a day on fasting days. Counting calories made it stressful and I felt deprived all of the time. I will give the 800 Kcal on fasting days approach a fair try over the next few weeks and I will select recipes from the book and the website to eliminate the stress of calorie counting. I'm working on a gradual approach to change my eating habits and limit my carbohydrate intake. Moderating one's carbohydrate intake and switching to a healthier diet overall, seem to be the newer advice in this book, anyway. Once I feel comfortable with that, I'll add fasting days to the mix. I'll be back to report on my results!
I read an ARC of this book that is freely available on Netgalley. Thank you!
I chose to read The Fast800 Diet because I was intrigued with the 5:2 diet where calories are limited a couple of days a week. In The Fast800 Diet, calories are restricted to 800 instead of 500. Who wouldn't want 300 more calories, right?
I liked the layout of this book, the science behind The Fast800 and the presentation of different types of diets including The Mediterranean and Keto (Ketosis) diets: two that I am very interested in. There are many ways to personalize when you eat and what you eat plus recipes in the back. I also liked the sections on exercise and mediation!
Right now I have been following a 16/8 Intermittent Fasting ( I eat my food within an 8 hour window most days) and eat keto. I am down 12 lbs in four weeks!!! I like the flexibility that Michael Mosley offers in The Fast800 DIet so that I can switch things around when I need the flexibility!!!
This book was mostly a short summary of Michael Mosley's other books -- with the base idea that doing a more extreme diet either short term or just a few days a week will be more effective than trying to cut down calories. The biggest change in this book appears to be to raise the max calories of the extreme diet to allow some people to do it for a longer period.
I would recommend this book for anyone who has not read any of Mr. Moseley's previous books and also anyone who wants a motivating kickstart.
Additionally the recipes looked quite yummy
An interesting book filled with weight loss methods that are unconventional yet up and coming, Michael Mosley introduces us to the ways of Time Restricted Eating (otherwise known as intermittent fasting) and why the Mediterranean diet works. I found this book to be very informative, giving examples of case studies which are done over many years. The 800 calorie diet which is supposed to be done in the beginning is the only part of Mosley's book that I still question. In it, it states that it was not difficult for the people in the studies to have meal replacements for up to twelve weeks for several of the meals to stay within the 800 calories. I found this very hard to believe as 800 calories is very little. For someone who exercises regularly, I can't imagine this being enough to sustain basic bodily functions. I do agree with the TRE though because it allows the body to break down fat during the fasting period. I have seen it work with many people including myself in terms of weight loss. Plus, it is not that difficult to do. It just takes a little meal planning. Half of the book was recipes and meal plans that were incorporated by Dr. Clare Bailey. I found several recipes that I wanted to try in this section. I especially enjoyed this part of the book. Overall, The Fast 800 Diet was a great read with many health and nutrition tips for all.
I was interested in reading this book for the long-term health benefits as well as the ideology behind the concept of fasting. In addition to the 5:2 diet process, the book explains the science bit quite well and includes practical advice on keeping fit. It also includes a great chapter on beating stress, which all helps for an holistic approach to diet and fitness.
A highly informative book on improving one's health: how to lose weight, reverse diseases, boost brain health, and more. The author presents a three-phase program designed to help you achieve these results. The book also includes meal plans and recipes for the reader to try. A must have for anyone looking to improve their overall health.
Thank you to Michael Mosley, NetGalley, and Atria Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I wanted to read this book to understand the benefits of intermittent fasting from a medical and scientific perspective. I have been fasting for health (not for weight loss) so I wasn't overly interested in dieting, but I did glean some really good and useful information. The only thing I thought was a bit disjointed was the recipe section, it felt as though it had been written for the American market (some of the ingredients were given with the US names and none of the measurements were in grams). Overall though I found the book an excellent read, and the diet is manageable in some form by almost anyone. I hope it benefits lots of people and helps spread the word of the benefits of intermittent fasting.
I found this book to be very informative. He explains the benefits of fasting, and how much it can help for weight loss, and fighting disease very well. The plan is easily personalized to fit your life and make it a lifestyle and not a diet. He goes over different fasting schedules, and diets (including keto, and Mediterranean). It includes some delicious recipes in the back, and also goes over some exercise and meditation. I am really excited to utilize this book, in my day to day fasting. I have been fasting for about a year, but haven't found the schedule that works with my life. This gave me some great new things to try and adjust in my schedule to get even more results that are sustainable. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about fasting, and TRE (time restricted eating). He is clear, concise and very knowledgeable.
I received this ARC from netgalley and the publisher.
This is a groundbreaking book, that breaks many of the preconceptions that I have had about ‘dieting’. As someone who binged and purged during the 90s (didn’t we all?) I have settled into a comfortable middle aged overweight situation. Not happy with it, but convinced that yo-yo dieting for 30 years means that I couldn’t lose anymore weight, and that limiting calories too much would plunge me into starvation mode and therefore make things even worse. Calories counting in and off had resulted in tiny bouts of weight loss that were not nearly as appealing as a bar of chocolate, to be honest.
This book uses scientific evidence to show that short term very low calorie eating plans can be amazingly effective, and won’t ruin your metabolism as I’d always believed. Not quite sure how this myth has survived so long but there you go...
I’ve lost 4kg in one week, and apparently such a quick loss is actually useful in that it inspires you to lose more and keep going, Believe me, eating a limited amount of food is incredibly do-able given my weight loss goal of 20 kg is finally something I think that I might actually be able to obtain.
Clearly and convincingly sets out the scientific research which (assuming it’s true) can help you maximise your health – Time Restricted Eating, Intermittent Fasting and HIIT. I don’t think it works so well as a ‘diet book’ – the recipes and menus are too limited – but that’s not why I read it anyway.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
The Fast800 Diet has some interesting information and recipes. Well written and easy to read. This book makes some good points.
A refreshingly practical and hype-free book about diet and disease prevention.
I like that Mosley shows the rationale and the scientific research behind different kinds of restricted eating patterns that can achieve the same results. Clearly written and informative. The second half, with exercise advice, recipes, meditation info etc seemed more like filler.
I’m not sure how realistic this program actually is but I found some things to be helpful and eye opening. The recipes sound delicious and easy.
After nearly a week of deliberating on whether or not I should go "keto" again after experiencing a 20+ lb recent weight gain, I was given access to this advanced reading copy of the "The Fast800 Diet". It could not have come at a better time! I wasted no time and dove in finishing it off in under 90 minutes. I particularly liked the authors ability to explain several popular eating plans including the Mediterranean Diet, Intermittent Fasting and Keto based diets. After discussing the ins and outs of each in simple to understand language, he does a great job at comparing the results obtained by showing recent studies with each. Several plan options are offered up such as 5:2, 2:5, 12/12 and 16/8. What do all these numbers mean? Hours and days on and off plans and the reasons to use one approach over another are offered. The back of the book is filled with some great sounding recipes, however, that was not my focus on reading this book. My focus was to pick an eating plan that I can stick with and the information provided in this book has made that easier for me to do knowing at 50+ years living and eating how my body reacts to different things. I skimmed over a small section on exercise and another on meditation because, well, that's just not my thing. I am confident after finishing this book that I can start with a fast track approach, intermingled with IF (14/10) and a 800 cal 5/2 approach but leaning towards more of a keto than Mediterranean based diet (I truly dislike fish!). Yes, this book provided me with all the information needed to come up with MY plan for MY body. I enjoyed this book and look forward to implementing what I have learned into an eating plan that hopefully puts me back on track. Many thanks to Atria and Netgalley for this ARC (all opinions expressed in this review are authentically mine).
There is some good info in here and I feel like I’m really going to love most of these recipes! I can’t wait to try them!!
