A useful guide. I had become stuck in a rut with Word, and this was a good refresher course. I also learned some new tips.
Surprising Helpful, if at Times Too Simple, Guide to Word
I have used Microsoft Word since it was a DOS-only program. I still use it every day as a writer, YouTuber, and freelance editor/proofreader. I used it in the past during college as well. I thought I knew the ins and outs of Word pretty well as I've used it for so long and in so many capacities. But I recently updated to Microsoft Word 2019 as a part of my 365 subscription, and I had noticed that things looked a little different but didn't really take the time to explore them.
I'm not quite sure what I was expecting from this book other than a brief look at Microsoft Word. The book purports to be able to be read in 30 minutes, but it definitely takes longer than that to go through the book, especially if you decide to take a few concepts for a spin in Word itself. Maybe it would take 30 minutes if you skip the parts that you already know (or think you know). Some information in this book is too basic, like how to copy and paste or save a file. Don’t we all know how to do simple computer tasks like that now? But there are plenty of nuggets of information here for people who haven't used every bit of Word’s impressive capabilities. For instance, it has been a long time since I had had to do anything with references or citations, so it was good to get a refresher course. I also have never built an index. I was also intrigued to see the new things added to Word 2019. There is certainly more to Word than a simple word processor. If you aren't sure about all that Word has to offer you, you might enjoy this book so you can understand its current possibilities. If you are relatively new to Word, this quick read will introduce you to the basics and then some. I recommend this book as a quick reference to anybody who uses or wants to use Word.
Clear and concise instruction which I intend to put to use on various reports for my job.
Thank you for writing this!
Thanks NetGalley for the most useful ARC!
This book will be helpful to beginners and intermediate users of Word. It will definitely help students learn the full capabilities of the program and become comfortable with it.
With more screenshots, this would be an excellent book. As it stands this book taught me a few new things, and as an advanced user I agreed with a lot of the tips and tricks it suggested. I knew a few faster ones, but only because I've been working in Word for a long time.
I have to say that I have spent considerably longer than 30 minutes with this book and every one of those minutes was of value as the author has done me an enormous favour for which I offer my thanks.
The whole raison d'être for this volume is to get one into Word and to generate a genuine comfort zone. I think the outcome for me is somewhat different from the author's intentions. The book proved to me that I have no need of any of the recent versions of Word as all I need to achieve from said program can be achieved with Word 2007 and long may that continue! Having explained the large benefit derived, I must also say that the book does what it sets out to do and clearly.
I will conclude by saying that whatever your wishes are regarding Word, this volume will most certainly help you along your path.
It was OK. I wished it would have had more screenshots, it is always helpful for this kind of books.
There are several books on the market whose goal is to teach you how to use Microsoft Word (or any of the other Office components). This might lead people to ask, “Why another book about this topic?” However, as I have learned over time, people need different approaches to learn the same thing. Therefore, the practical approach used by this author will work with certain audiences. The approach used is like having someone sitting down next to you and guiding you through each step. In addition, the illustrations provided help translate the text for those who may need that assistance and “Protips ”are offered. For those who still struggle with the digital society we have become, this book makes an excellent teaching tool.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book that was provided by the publisher through Net Galley. However, the thoughts and opinions presented here are my own.
A useful guide for beginners, containing some nuggets of information for seasoned Word users too. Very handy and useful.
A very personal account of the use of Microsoft Word which is completely different from the standard textbooks. As a lecturer in IT, I found the book interesting on a personal level but feel that my students would be frustrated by the written explanations which were good, but would have greatly benefitted from more supporting illustrations.
Quick, concise, and very easy. Hoping to use some of what I learned at work and home. Great book.
Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free,it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
I have Word 2007 and the Word iPad app. I've been using Word with Dragon Dictation by Nuance Communications since I was at school. I'd always wanted to write books and Word is still my go-to programme for that. So many concepts are in this book. From editing to indents and paragraphs as well as styles and much much more.
A good book for anyone using Word at any level: a casual user, writer/ author or a student. I think everyone will get something out of this book. Good for dipping in and out of and it has well-structured chapters although the Protip boxes aren't clear at all. I only knew what was in them as VoiceOver read everything out to me. The screnshots from Word were small in the eARC.
Thanks to Angela Rose for the eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntery review. 4 stars.
It is a very useful and accessible set of information about how to properly use this year edition of Microsoft Word. The book has plenty of tips, explained in a very easy language, and additional visual helpful content. It has some cat-related jokes too.
At the end of the reading - which may take a bit over 30 minutes, especially if you are the kind of person who is taking notes and wants to test different features and advice given in the book, you will be able to know not only how to create a new document, but also how to use professionally the collaborative features, add images and tables to the content, use correctly the indexes etc. Some new features of 2019 Microsoft Word includes online storage, new templates and the possibility of working together on a document, a detail which is very useful for extended projects but also for academic work. As an academic myself, I highly appreciate the details regarding the index, references and footnotes, which once manager properly, are so easy to use moulding different academic formats.
A very useful read that makes writing more pleasant while relying on a professional service.
** Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with the digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review **
Microsoft Word is a easy to use and informative book. It is well written and I learned some interesting things I didn't know. This is a useful book.
I use Word everyday at work and this guide was able to show me some new things that I didn't know that I could do in Word. It was nice to have a guide that was condensed and useful.
A useful, well written guide. I use Word on a daily basis and still discovered some little gems in this book. Recommended for anyone who wants to brush up on their skills..
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I think for anyone that doesn't have any prior knowledge of Microsoft Word, this book might be beneficial. However, if you're already familiar with Word you won't really gain anything from this book.
This was an easy read and I quite enjoyed that the author decided to compare the various available versions of Word 2019. It's great refresher in Word and excellent learning tool for new users to Word.
I personally enjoyed the keyboard shortcuts index at the back of the book.
Microsoft Word is perhaps the most ubiquitous computer program in he world. This short guide presents a wealth of information for those interested in using the newest version of the program. Just the list of keyboard sortcuts makes this a worthwhile read.
