Robert Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite has been through many trials and tribulations to get to the point where she feels she can actually rest and relax. Returning to Cedar Grove for a family vacation does not work out the way she thought it would. As always, Dugoni manages to give readers more than a simple mystery...there's always another choice that could have been taken. His characters, including Tracy, are well developed and by book #7, seem like old friends. I'm always happy to see a new Robert Dugoni book.
This is the seventh in Robert Dugoni’s series featuring Seattle homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite. I’ve read some of the previous ones and enjoyed them all.
Tracy has given birth and while their home in Seattle is being renovated, Tracy, Dan, and Baby Daniella retreat to the couple’s hometown of Cedar Grove which, for a small town, is seeing a bit of intrigue of its own. An unseemly attorney hired to look into the death of Heather Johansen, a young woman murdered around the same time as Tracy’s sister, Sarah was killed has become a victim himself. A local reporter, the wife of the present day sheriff, has died in a fire. Suspicion has fallen on the sheriff who is now suspended. Could all of these incidents be related, including the original death of the first girl?
Tracy has taken a leave of absence from her job but soon finds herself immersed in investigating these incidents at the request of retired sheriff, Roy Calloway, long time friend of her deceased father. Her investigation puts her life in danger. But, after all, Tracy is a homicide detective and that is what she does. Meanwhile, attorney husband Dan is involved in a business lawsuit against the city of Cedar Grove.
I thought the first part of this book was a bit of a slog. The case unfolded slowly and there was, for me, too much talk about the baby. But, it picked up resulting in another satisfying Dugoni read.
While having read the prior novels that involve the earlier death of Tracy’s sister is helpful, Dugoni does a good job of filling in enough background so that this can be read as a standalone.
The latest in the Detective Tracey Crosswhite series, I read this as a stand alone and totally enjoyed it. The detective is facing her hardest task to date- her newborn baby. Embracing life as a new mum, Tracey and her husband have returned to their hometown where she assists the local police with a murder enquiry. A fast paced thriller with plenty of action and twists to keep the reader guessing. I loved this rollicking ride that kept me glued from start to finish.
Many Thanks to Net Galley, Thomas & Mercer and Robert Dugoni for a chance to read #A Cold Trail, 7th in the series of #Tracy Crosswhite.
I think this is one series after Lisa Gardner's D D Warren that I have faithfully followed and in number order too. Each of these books can be read as stand-alone, but to get the whole growth of the character and the changes each year brings in Tracy's life one must definitely start from book 1. What I admire most about Robert Dugoni's writing is that the stories are not just focused on the mystery aspect of it, each of them shows the decisions, the pains and the sacrifices these professionals make to get the results for the family of victims. There's so much depth to the character study and also we are not given Tracy's life alone but we get to see her team mates and glimpses of their life and pain too.
Dan and Tracy have moved to Cedar Grove as their home is being renovated and being a new mom to Danielle. things are not easy for Tracy but she's asked by Chief Roy to help in the investigation of a death of a journalist with ties to a 20 yr old crime. Dan is also looking into the civil case in the meantime but both the cases merge and truths emerge that leaves everyone gasping.
The series is just getting better and better and surely waiting eagerly for the next one.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the opportunity to get back into Tracy's life and see what is new.
Ever since I read "My Sister's Grave" I have loved the writing of Mr. Dugoni, and I eagerly await every story in the Tracy Crosswhite series. Tracy and Dan are new parents and are staying in their house back in Cedar Grove, while their other house is renovated. Tracy is struggling with the decision to go back to work or not, when she is presented with a cold case. A cold case that is having ties to the present. Dan is representing a business in Cedar Grove, who is being bullied by the city. Once again those several different threads come together to make one chilling story.
If you have not read any books in this series do yourself a favor and start with My Sister's Grave, you won't be disappointed.
Have read this wonderful series of Tracy Crosswhite series in totally the wrong order, do not know why but I have.
It has not spoilt this great book A Cold Trail
Difficult for me to give a review as I got a bit mixed up, sorry, but it’s a great series of books and do read them in the correct order.
Thanks net galley yet again with providing me with wonderful reading material by Robert Dugoni.
Even a New Daughter and Maternity Leave Can’t Keep Tracy From Tracking Down a Killer
The novel opens in 1993 with a lightly-dressed young woman walking back to Cedar Grove, WA, Terry Crosswhite’s hometown, on a deserted highway after dark with snow starting to fall. A car stops, and the young woman argues with the driver. She starts to walk away but is murdered.
The novel then skips to the present day. Terry Crosswhite with her husband, Dan, a nanny and a new daughter has moved into Dan’s parent’s home in Cedar Groove while their farmhouse in Redmond was being remodeled for their now larger family. While they were out for dinner, the retired police chief, Calloway, stops and talks with them. Terry quickly discovers that he is not retired but is the acting police chief. He tells them that there have been two murders recently that may be tied to the 1993 murder because both victims were looking into that murder. The prime suspect to 1993 murder was a young police officer, named Finley, who became the police chief when Calloway retired. One of the new murders was Finley’s wife. Calloway replaced Finley on a temporary basis. Terry had known Calloway her entire life, and with this quick conversation Calloway set the hook on Terry quite well; there was no way that Terry could not take up this case. Dan was spending his time representing a local store owner suing the city over code violations. The novel takes off from here.
The pace moves right along. There were adequate twists, turns and misdirections interwoven with good B-storylines that captured my interest quickly. I finished this novel faster than normal. These are major criteria for a high star rating. This is the seventh novel in this series. If you have not read any of the previous novels, that fact should not stop you from enjoying this novel as adequate background to past events are provided.
The B-storyline expands the reader’s knowledge of Tracy and Dan. As the story takes place in Cedar Groove where she and Dan grew up, many of the characters from this location fill in Tracy’s and Dan’s history and insight on how they became who they are. Introduced in this novel is a delightful character of their nanny, a young Irish woman whose mother seems to have a saying appropriate for every situation. Hopefully, she will stay around for the next few novels. Lastly, Detective Vic Fazio and his wife join the story and contribute to both the main and B-storylines.
There is just a sprinkling of vulgar language, and no graphic sex scenes so if you are sensitive to these, I believe that you should have any major issues here. There are some murders, and one described as it occurs. They are not grisly or over emphasized. Again, they should not be a problem.
Overall, I found this novel and enjoyable and compelling read. All of the story threads were tied up satisfactorily by the end of the novel. Based upon reading and reviewing this series, I have purchased previous novels by Robert Dugoni and am reading one of the novels now. I rate this novel with five stars. If you have read the previous novels in this series, you must read this one. If you have not but are intrigued with this novels description, do give it a try.
I have received a free eBook version of this novel through NetGalley from Thomas & Mercer with an expectation for an honest, unbiased review. I wish to thank Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read this novel early.
Not my favourite book of the series. I dislike legal thrillers and there was too much of the 'legal' stuff in this book. Plus I missed the characters from previous novels. Despite this it was well written and a good book, just not my cup of tea this time. The constant mention of Tracey's sister is beginning to grate as well. That story has been done and resolved, I find it irritating now when it's constantly mentioned. Feels like it's there to pad out a book rather than be relevant to the story line.
Thank you netgalley for an advance copy of A Cold Trail. I have been eagerly awaiting the next Tracey Crosswhite book to arrive, and the seventh installment in the series did not disappoint. We find Tracey and Dan back in Cedar Grove facing a lot of new challenges. Parenting a new daughter and discussions of if and when Tracey will return to work among other things. When the local sheriff reaches out to Tracey to help with an ongoing case, Dan is not pleased. When their family is put in danger including their nanny, Dan doesn’t know how to handle it. Tracey being a detective to the bone, can’t let this go though, and she continues to investigate so that she can solve what has been happening to residents.
Meanwhile, Dan has his own storyline regarding helping an old business in town survive to stay open another day. Businesses have been selling one by one downtown, and making way for updated, renovated storefronts.
Slowly but surely, as expected, these two parallel storylines merge into one. Personally I felt more drawn and interested in Dan’s storyline of what he was doing to save the store from having to close. While Tracey’s storyline was compelling, I found it a bit too predictable.
Overall fans of Tracey Crosswhite will find what they are looking for in this seventh book. I look forward to the 8th.
I love the Tracy Crosswhite series! I think I was hooked from #1 and continue to enjoy reading the mysteries and drama in Tracy's life. In A Cold Trail, Tracy and Dan have just had their baby daughter, Daniella, and during the remodel of their house just outside of Seattle, they move back to their home town of Cedar Grove (near Bellingham, WA if you are familiar with the area).
A few days after they move back, the chief of police sees Tracy at a diner and asks her if she would help out on a case he's working on. Of course, Tracy can never get away from her work as a detective and goes to meet with him... and is immediately hooked. It causes some tension between her and Dan because he would rather her stay with Daniella during her maternity leave, but Tracy can't stop thinking about the case especially when it has some ties to the murder of her sister Sarah.
At the same time, Dan is litigating a case involving one of the local businesses in Cedar Grove which starts to have connections to the case that Tracy is working on. Cedar Grove is a small town, and secrets cannot be kept, so everyone soon learns that Tracy is working on the local case. Her life becomes threatened which kicks in her mothering instincts to keep Daniella safe.
I love that her partner in the PD, Faz and his wife Vera come to her aid. Faz is a hilarious addition and their banter is so entertaining. Tracy teams up with several people to find out what is going on in this small town and quickly discovers that people are not all that they seem. This series is built on the vibrant characters, as well as the compelling story line and mystery. Another enjoyable read!
I hadn't read any of his other Tracy Crosswhite books except the very first one. I don't know what's in between, but it worked out perfectly because this book takes place back in Cedar Grove and actually connects somewhat with book one! A girl thought to be murdered by the same person as Tracy's sister may not have been after all. Cedar Grove is a sketchy town and Tracy and her lawyer husband are both going to get to the bottom of murders and fraud alike.
I really enjoyed the book. Great writing, great characters. Though I'm not a working mother, I can relate to Tracy's struggle in her new journey of motherhood. I appreciated the way Dugoni handled that matter, as well as her marriage to Dan. You don't really see healthy marriages portrayed very often in writing and I liked how he set up their marriage and had them deal with conflict. It's nice to see both partners recognize their selfishness and realize they need to sacrifice for one another.
The author did a good job stringing the plot along, helping us make the connections with the subtle clues. He created suspense and mystery and kept the culprit/s a secret until the end. I might just have to go back and read the middle books in this series!
**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**
Tracy grew up in Cedar Grove but the town has bad memories for her, as her sister was killed there. She returns with her husband and baby, and despite being on maternity leave, she finds herself helping out the local police officer concerning the murder of a colleague's wife. However, some cold cases, plus the case her husband is working on to represent a local business being forced out by the council suddenly all become intertwined.
The climax is well handled, as you spin as each party discovers facts that will impact on the other cases.
Tracy is torn between wanting to bring up Daniella and enjoy her babyhood, but also to keep her police career on track. Can she have it all? And what if her work leads to putting her family in danger?
It's a good read, keeping you in suspense. I enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tracy Crosswhite has just had a baby. She and her husband have returned to Cedar Grove, while their house is being renovated. Tracy is on maternity leave from the Seattle PD, but she gets sucked into investigating a cold case when another murder happens. The wife of the current sheriff in Cedar Grove has been murdered and her study burned to cover up the crime. Tracy has to go back to the past to investigate a 25-year old murder to discover how it ties into the current case. Nice twisty plotting and enjoyable characters make this series a joy to read.
Once again Robert Dugoni does not disappoint with the latest addition to the Tracy Crosswhite series "A Cold Trail". Dan, Tracy and their new baby head back to Cedar Grove while their house in Seattle is being remodeled. Thanks to the former police chief, Roy Calloway, it doesn't take Tracy long to get involved in another decades
old murder investigation that had originally seemed similar to her sister's murder. Grabbed me from
the beginning, fast paced, and if you've never read the Tracy Crosswhite series add it to your tbr list!!
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.
Tracy and Dan have moved back to their hometown of Cedar Grove, WA. Tracy, a homicide detective, and Dan, an attorney, are having their home in Redmond renovated after the birth of their two month old daughter Daniella. Cedar Grove is where they grew up, and Dan’s parent’s house is the perfect weekend home for their little family.
Tragedy lurks in Cedar Grove as well. Tracy’s sister Sarah was killed many years ago, followed by the death of another teen, Heather Johannsen. Now Kimberly Armstrong, wife of the police chief and former friend of Heather’s, has died as well. Coincidence or is something more evil at play here in Cedar Grove.
Lately I’ve been drawn to mysteries and thrillers. Something just a little bit darker than your usual chick lit. A Cold Trail brings a lot of great elements together. Small town, lifetime friends and acquaintances, and murder. The time travel sequences in this book that share the first hand experiences of the victims intertwined with the current day investigation into what really happened lends an interesting feel to the story. Throughout the book one is left wondering who was really responsible for these crimes, are they linked, and what was the motive?
I greatly enjoyed this trip to Cedar Grove, Washington. The dark and twisty nature of this story was just enough to make my skin crawl, but not so much that I was afraid to turn out the lights.
4.5 stars

Loved it! I have been following this series since it’s came out. I didn’t realize they were making a book 7 so of course was ecstatic to find out. With her being pregnant in the last one I thought that was it. This book was even more exciting because they are back in forest grove. Definitely another win in the Tracy Crosswhite series. Thanks NetGalley.
Small towns can be killer. Tracy and Dan return to Cedar Grove, where they both grew up, while their house is being remodeled and Tracy finishes out her maternity leave. While there Chief Calloway asks Tracy for some help on a couple cold cases and she takes the opportunity to see if she can balance a career and being a mother. From here the book takes off with glimpses of the past, Dan’s suit in Cedar Grove to help a small business owner and Tracy’s pursuit of the cold cases. Masterfully written, giving you chills while you try to figure out what really happened and who is behind the murders keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer. for this advanced reader copy edition and hearing my honest review. Looking forward to reading more with you

Thanks to Netgalley, Thomas and Mercer and Robert Dugoni for this ARC. I love this series and was excited to get a copy of this 7th book in the series. Tracey is one of my favorite female book characters and I’m always interested in what she gets herself into in each new book. This author never disappoints! Can’t wait for the next one !
This is a really well written and plotted book, where Seattle PD detective, back in her small town home waiting to give birth, has to solve a set of murders that go back far in time. There are enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing who is responsible. And the other law enforcement players show how small town politics plays into when laws get enforced. But in the end there are some surprising twists that make reading this one worthwhile.
A Cold Trail by Robert Dugoni is book 7 in the Tracy Crosswhite series. I've been a fan of this series and have been looking forward to reading this book. I loved that the story was set in Cedar Grove. I won't write a detailed review as the book will be released only in February.
The story as such was not up to the level of some of the other books in this series, my favorite being Her Final Breath. I especially found the details about Dan's investigations a little confusing. And there was very little investigation done by Tracy, which was something I really enjoyed in Her Final Breath. The reason I love detective novels or police procedurals is because I love to read about the investigation aspect of such stories, and that was lacking in this story. Overall, a good one-time read. I'd give this book 3.5 stars.
