Just couldn't get into this book. Characters were all over the place and just didn't interest me. I was unable to get past the first couple of chapters.
It's been a while since I've read a book about the glitzy, decadent lifestyle of Hollywood and thoroughly enjoyed this latest adventure from Gigi Levangie. More hilarious than a Jackie Collins tale, the rollercoaster ride best-selling author, Agnes, finds herself on makes for a delightful read.
Been There, Married That by Gigi Levangie:
“Agnes Murphy Nash is the perfect Hollywood wife – she has the right friends, the right clothes, and even a side career of her own as a writer. Her husband Trevor is a bigshot producer, and from the outside it looks like they’re living a picture-perfect celebrity life, complete with tennis tournaments and lavish parties.
But the job description of a Hollywood wife doesn’t cover divorce, which is the way Agnes’ life is headed after she comes home one day to find her credit cards cancelled and the security passwords to get into her enormous LA home changed. Oh, and there’s a guy there whose job it is to tase her if she tries to enter…which she does. Needless to say, Agnes’ husband is dead set on making sure she loses big time, but Agnes isn’t the type to just lie down and take it. In a world of fremenies and hot nannies, personal psychics and “skinny” jello shots, Agnes may be losing her husband, but could that mean getting her own life back?”

There's nothing more to say rather than "This book isn't my style”. I was expecting a good laugh with this book, but all that I got was a lady trying hard to be funny, making it one of the most slow reads ever.
One of the main problems with this book was that it wasn’t engaging at all. The characters weren’t relatable and I simply didn’t care about their problems, making them just annoying.
There are twist that came out of nowhere and in my opinion didn’t add anything reliable to the main plot. To me they were like fillers between main scenes, just like commercial breaks.
Honestly I wouldn’t recommend this book. Sorry.
I liked Agnes, how snarky and quick witted she is. What I didn't like about Agnes is how she kept defending her narcissistic husband Trevor even though he was trying to ruin her. Trevor was crazy. I also liked Agnes' sister Fin. She was a great character. I'm sure there are Hollywood types like this couple and it's sad that people would treat each other the way Trevor treated Agnes. There were eye rolling times, times when I thought seriously, but there were also times I laughed. I found it entertaining. It's a good beach read when you want something without a lot of emotional substance.
Enter into the witty world of Hollywood with story that will appeal to fans of Candace Bushnell and Plum Sykes. In the city of the silver screen, anything can happen to the wife of a producer when her husband decides he's had enough of married life. Will juggling matrimonial mayhem, a promising career as a writer, and a teenager be too much for Angus?
Although interesting, and at times humorous, I had trouble relating to the protagonist and really getting into the story.
I was fortunate to receive a free ARC of this book from Netgalley. The above thoughts, insights, or recommendations are my own meek musings.
I expected this to be a satire book about the rich and glitz of LA, but the narrator was mean-spirited and just as insufferable as the people around her that she mocked. I don't consider myself easily offended, but when the main character needs to point out a minority character's grammatical shortcomings, (which was just there to perpetuate a stereotype, and was a completely unnecessary detail that had nothing to do with the story-line), I can't root for that character. Besides that, the writing was choppy which made the story incredibly hard to follow. If I didn't read the synopsis beforehand, I would not have been able to follow what was even going on.
Been There, Married That is about the journey of Agnes Murphy Nash. Agnes is discovering her identity in the middle of a divorce from her Hollywood husband. Their lifestyle is larger than any life I could imagine for myself, which just makes it a perfect escape! This has the glitz and sophistication of Hollywood living, but it also has the pressure and the quirks of all the weird people in Agnes' life.
The supporting characters to Agnes' life and journey are great. Her teenage daughter, her sister who spent time in prison, her husband, Trevor...and many more people that you will either love or hate. Overall, a hilarious read!!!!
This book is a mess! The writing is bad with its chopped sentences and the characters were some kind of caricatures. I think the author wanted to write a hilarious rom-com novel but totally missed the mark. It was painful to read and I had to put it down.
Been There, Married That was a fun read. I have never read anything by Gigi Levangie before but will look for more of her works in the future. The story was a bit all over the place and felt rushed at times, but overall was an enjoyable read. I found the book humorous and entertaining. .
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this free eARC
I really enjoyed reading Been There, Married That by Gigi Levangie. I received it for free in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley. I will say that there are many edits that need to be made to make it smoother, but I honestly could not put it down. I found it to be snarky, funny, and witty. It was very enjoyable and I will be looking for more to read by this author. Thank you!
I like snarky books because they make me laugh but this one was all over the place. Was getting a little confused at times. Maybe if the author kept on 1 topic instead of being all over the place I would of enjoyed the book more.
This book was good though I will say it lost some of its momentum towards the end. I enjoyed the characters, but the love triangle was smothered what felt like far too quickly and easily when we finally had everyone all together. All in all it was a fun read I just felt it could have been even more. I wished there had been more details and plot reveals in the end instead of the drawn out beginning and short end we received.
A hilarious account of what happens when a Hollywood couple divorces, especially when the wife was a normal person. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get behind any of the characters; none of them are really likeable and this isn’t a story where they’re suppose to be unlikeable. But, it was a quick and short read, so I didn’t expect it to go beneath the surface.
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I thought I would. I thought it would be much funnier, but was still a light enjoyable read.
I’ve never read a book by Gigi Levangie before, and I felt like I was missing out on several inside jokes. I found the narrative to be an entertaining but scattered inside look at a messy Hollywood divorce. While it was hilarious at moment it was also at times confusing and hard to figure out how we got there.
I think this is the first netgalley book that has been sent to me that I just cannot read. It's like listening to someone talk at you while suffering from ADD and on steroids, it's all over the place and just so uninteresting.
The cover/title and description of the book sounded like one I'd really enjoy However this just wasn't one that was my cup of tea. I'm sure there are people who will love it...I just didn't get into it. Thanks to NetGalley for an honest review in exchange for an e-ARC.
The first few chapters were kind of hard for me as they made me think I was watching one of the many housewives of wherever, and I don't care about name dropping brands. When husband decides he wants a divorce right now the first time I was ready to throw in the towel on this book because wife has been a high profile wife of a very successful producer for ten years and didn't seem to know anything about how the world works in wealth. She is just too innocent and plainly didn't pay any attention to her "friends" divorces. However, once the split happens for real and sister comes into the book, it gets good and fun. I kept reading to find out what's going to happen with our menopausal heroine and when is she going to grow a spine and give old husband a shove out the door. Somethings never happen, but she finally uses her brain and evens the playing field for her child. The writing gets confusing at times, we're on a subject and suddenly reading about something completely different, maybe scene breaks will show in the final version, it would help to not take the reader out of the story. All in all it was a fun read. Thanks NetGalley and publishers for the read.
Life's been a bit tough lately, and I needed something that would make me laugh out loud. This was the perfect dose of catty and trivial, which is what I'd hoped for going into it. Good for when we all need to pick up something a little bit lighter!
Is there such a thing as too many witty one-liners? That's what I have to keep asking myself as I'm writing this review. Let me start out by saying this is my first Gigi Levangie book so I had no clue what to expect. For the first few chapters, I seriously felt like I was reading an author's brainstorming notes on funny scenes/phrases/conversations that they might stretch throughout their next novel, then I felt incredibly confused, and then it finally clicked that Levangie LOVES witty one-liners and that this book doesn't have enough paragraph breaks. Once I finally "got it" the rest of the book felt like standing in the ocean surf where the waves keep trying to knock you down but you are kind of enjoying it, but kind of not enjoying it because you keep sucking salt water up your nose. I thought Agnes and her sense of humor were pretty special for the most part, but it just never stopped and she always had too many snarky thoughts/comments/observations for her character to ever feel real or relatable. Levangie didn't allow the reader time to laugh/sigh/gasp and really take in the first snark fest before she threw in three more witty comments for good measure. So I kept reading to find out what happened to Pep, but I really didn't care about any of the other characters. I know that a lot of people would really enjoy the constant biting, self-effacing, gossip type humor but I'm not one of them. I would love to read another Levangie book to see if her vivid world creation and humor would translate differently in a non-Hollywood book. Thank you for allowing me to read and review this book!
