I did not finish this book at 25%. The stream of consciousness writing is very difficult to follow. I expected this to be a comedic turn on Hollywood marriages, but this just did not work out that way. Conversations between characters were incoherent and left me wondering who exactly these people were and what they had to do with anything currently going on, so at that point, I gave up. Thank you for the opportunity.
Gigi Levangie is the ex wife of Brian Grazer-co founder of Imagine Entertainment with Ron Howard.-the producers behind blockbusters including Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind. Ms. Levangie is mostly known for her novel The Starter Wife (although she is actually Mr. Grazer's third wife), and the movie Stepmom. Is Been There, Married That a re-telling of her marriage and divorce to Brian? I hope not, as he seems like a decent guy despite an aversion to long term matrimony (he is currently on his fourth wife). Been There, Married That tries to be funny-the problem is it tries too hard and winds up becoming a caricature of itself. Perhaps that was Ms. Levangie's intention all along and the joke was lost on me, but Been There, Married That is cringe inducing, not just in its description of A lister's and their "dixie cup" (read disposable) attitude toward marriage, but also with the writing. It hop scotches all over the place making the dialogue nearly impossible to follow. I'm sorry to say, but I've Been There, Couldn't Finish that!!
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this ebook! I was super excited to read this as I’ve been a fan of Gigi’s other novels but this totally fell flat for me! I’m not into the Hollywood reality drama and I’m guessing I’m just passed this type of genre now because I was skimming through most of it just to get done. Agnes was an unrelatable character for me.
Let me start off by saying I’m not a fan of reality tv and this book feels like it should be one of those housewives of whatever shows. However, it was a bit entertaining.
While I didn’t like the heroine being so whiny and kind of weak, she did have some hilarious thoughts and actions.
This was a fairly quick read and great for the change in genre I needed.
This was a story about a relatively famous couple who go through a divorce. It was a great concept, but very hard to follow. The writing jumped around quite a bit and it was hard to understand time frames and when one paragraph ended and another began. I did enjoy the humor, but most of the story was very farfetched and the ending was unsatisfying. The main character and her sister were very well developed and likeable and that did carry the story along. All in all, I enjoyed the story, it was very different from the type of book I usually read.
For the life of me, I just could not finish this. It was light-hearted, humorous or interesting. Wow, I just did not get the try every sentence to milk something as funny. Sorry, this was not even good.
Thanks, NetGalley for the advance copy to review.
Really enjoyed the humor in this book, full of sassy phrases. But it went all over for me with really no story line . I appreciate the chance to read it. Did get lost a couple times when it jumped from one topic to another. Thank you Netgalley. Love reading new authors.
I requested to read and review this book for free from St. Martin press. This is the first book i have read by author Gigi Levangie. It was a very interesting plot and story line. There is a few intriguing characters in this story Fin, Anges., Gio, Pep. There is also characters that you find out that you want to watch your back around. And that life can sometimes throw you for a loop. But you are stronger then you know. And you can start again no matter what happens in life. This book is for a mature reader only. This book requires you to pay attention so you don't get lost.
Agnes and Trevor are getting divorced, which is not uncommon. However, he is a Hollywood superstar director and she is an author who has been running his life for years. Now that the marriage is on the rocks, things are going to get crazy! Gigi Levangie follows the ups and down of this over-the-top celebrity divorce, where the stakes are high, and the situations are straight from the Real Housewives franchise. When Trevor decides to go after everything that Agnes knows, she decides to stop being in the background. The characters are outrageous, and the story is fast-paced. This would be a great cleanse or quick read between heavier books.
I started to read it and it is quiet funny but somehow is not really takes my attention that much as I thought it will be. Also, the lines and the conversations are not so clear and they are confusing who says what.
I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
What a fun read. Agnes is married to a big shot Hollywood producer and one day she comes home and finds out that he has changed the security code to the gates and can't get it. Her husband, Trevor, wants a divorce. Trevor being the man-child he is, gets a fancy lawyer and just wants to win. At any cost. Agnes is going to fight him tooth and nail and eventually they comes to a compromise. Along the way, there are some antics like a stint in rehab for an almond addiction and some grief sex that make the story entertaining.
The hilarity never really surfaces in a novel which feels like too much surface: it's hard to empathize with or even to like these characters. Gigi Levangie nails Hollywood and its glitz: but a novel lives and dies in its characters...and these don't come to life.
Unfortunately, I did not like this book. It read like it was written in a rush. It had a cute enough premise but it was silly, vapid and full of plot holes.
I will gratefully read every book this author writes and join her for wine as well! An absolute perfect representation of the vapid and plastic environment called Hollywood and those who choose to be part of it. I laughed out loud at this book.
I've been struggling with what to write in this review. I honestly did not like Been There, Married That, at all for at least the first quarter to one-third of the book. I kept reading only because I promised to give this honest review in exchange for the ARC I received from NetGalley.
As I powered on through pages and pages, I found some parts that I really did enjoy and that kept me wanting to read. However I also encountered long stretches of verbal vomit that made my face do strange things, and I would get to the end of a paragraph and think, what on earth did any of that mean?
It's a little frightening to think that there might be actual people out there walking around in Los Angeles who even remotely resemble some of the characters portrayed in this book. I had a hard time differentiating between some of the lesser characters (friends and house staff) because there was no clear definition, and/or they were referred to so often by something other than their name.
I gave this book three stars because in the end I was glad I had continued on, and I did find some of the linguistic acrobatics entertaining; some (many) of them, not so much.
I really had a hard time getting into this book. I read about 1/4 of it and still wasn't hooked. From some of the reviews it seems to be good and very funny. But, I think it just wasn't for me. I got confused with all of the characters and the dialogue was hard to follow.
I could not finish this book as my distaste for all of the characters was immense. None of the characters had any redeeming qualities and I really didn't care what happened from one chapter to the next. I gave it my all 50% in.
I think the storyline here is engaging and the characters themselves are interesting, but I had a difficult time with the writing style. It felt opaque and confusing and left me uninterested in the story itself.
I really thought I would love this book but it was just trash. I rarely hate a book but I could only get 3/4 of the way through this book and had to stop. I loved the cover thought the story sounded cute but in reality the author just wrote long drawn out not funny story. Seemed as though the author was trying way too hard to get us to laugh. I was gifted this book from Netgalley. I was asked to leave an honest review and I have.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC version.
The cover and premise of the story really drew me in. I was excited to read this - jumped right in. Unfortunately it fell flat for me. At times I found it difficult to read, it seemed like scene transitions were missing, I had to go back and make sure I hadn't missed something.
I found most of the characters unlikeable or not well fleshed out. With that being said the last 1/4 of the book was good. While I had a hard time with 3/4 of it - I enjoyed the latter part of the book.
It almost felt like 2 different people wrote it - typically I find most books start off strong and fall flat - this was the opposite. I almost gave up and put it aside.
