This one sounded like it would be fun - I enjoy stories that stories that poke fun at the rich and famous, especially when they're written with the voice of experience. It does have its moments, and maybe at another time in my life (or in the world!) I would've liked it a lot more. But while there were the occasional parts that were fun, most of the characters were so far over the top that it was hard to really enjoy them - too much rolling of my eyes got in the way of fully engaging in their stories. And it felt a bit disjointed at times - I had too many "Wait - how did we get here? What did I miss??" moments - although of course that might've been a consequence of my not being fully engaged. I did enjoy the parts I could relate to - including aging bodies and teenaged daughters and the attending joys of both. Mostly I came away happy that my life has been so unencumbered by the lifestyles of the rich and famous. I can imagine lots of people loving this one, it just wasn't a great fit for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Martin's Press for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
I tried, I tried so many times to get into this book and ENJOY it because I hate leaving bad reviews. Especially on ARC's. But this just didn't work for me. Maybe for you. But not my cup of tea.
*Huge thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for giving me this for free in exchange for an honest review*
Unfortunately, this was a DNF. This book just tried too hard. It reminded me of the kid in school that wanted so bad to be popular that they just tried everything all at the same time with no rhyme or reason. It got confusing. I could see where parts were supposed to be funny. The attempt wasn't lost on me, but the delivery was.
Vintage Gigi Levangie. Funny, sharp, funny, dead on, funny, fun. Our main character Agnes navigates the same waters as the writer herself, so there is truth on every page in this story of redemption, second chances and rebuilding your life. A big dollop of Hollywood glitz, glamour and truth.
I am late to review this title, but I am so glad I waited. It was just the laugh-out-loud read I needed during this crazy time. I couldn't decide on a favorite character and as a fan of the RHO reality series, I could literally SEE this playing out. A sleep companion....SMH. It was a refreshing read and I highly recommend it for a great laugh. It's the perfect beach/weekend read!
I was given an ARC copy of this book for an honest review. I was interested based on the recommendation that this was a humorous read. I do read some women’s fiction and chick lit but I knew immediately that this wasn’t going to be the book for me. The characters were not developed and the plot was all over the place. I never could connect or care at all about turning the next page. That said, to each his own. This one just didn’t do it for me. At all.
Hilarious! Loved the author's wit! Just a fun light-hearted read! I love getting lost in the Real Housewives shows so this felt right up my alley from the start!
Been There, Married That is a fast paced, humourous, and at times an almost hard to believe novel. I felt like I was reading a television reality show (think Desperate Housewives and a cross with Kardashians but maybe a bit more out of this world), you had moments of absolute disbelief but it also left you wondering could people really behave like this??
Our two main characters are part of the Hollywood crowd – they have the money, fame and careers. But as we know all too often, this doesn’t bring you happiness. Agnes’ husband (who is over the top, dramatic, selfish and down right unbelievable) decides he wants a divorce but he doesn’t go about this the normal way. Instead he locks her out of the house, cancels her credit cards and begins a very strange relationship with the live in nanny. Agnes is a free spirited, independent and bold woman. She rolls with the punches and takes everything thrown at her as a joke. Which also helps her bounce right back, even after hitting rock bottom.
The plot itself is very interesting but the novel was a bit hard to follow at times. The events were extreme and while it gives you a good laugh, it is almost a bit too unbelievable. While I really enjoyed Agnes’ character (come on how can you not love someone who takes an incident where it looks like she peed her pants in front of a crowd of people and come out with an advertising deal), I wish her character was a bit more developed. Agnes at time felt like she was spiraling but given the nature of their environment and her situations this made sense.
If you enjoy the world of reality television and celebrity gossip then this may just be a great fit for you. The theme is messy, out of this world and unbelievable – everything you tend to picture when you think of the lives of the rich and famous.
This one was just ok for me. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. There were a few funny moments and that's what made me keep turning the pages. It was hard to get in to and I didn't care much for the characters. If I hadn't found it funny, I would have rated it much lower. 2.5⭐ for me. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Just so much no. Disappointing because it seemed like it could be a lighthearted fun read. Agnes is not a sympathetic character, despite being screwed royally by her soon-to-be ex. None of these characters were worthy of the space they were given, exceptions being Fin and the tres hermanas. I'm from LA, I cut my teeth partying on the Strip, I know what it is like. This just isn't it, and it is so far over the top to be beyond reasonable caricature and into insanity. It also didn't help that the book careened from one chaos to another without giving the readers a chance to breathe and reground themselves.
Unfortunately, this is a hard pass on any other titles from this author.
Been There, Married That is a humorous, escapist read perfect to toss in a beach bag. Who doesn't love a tale involving scandal and a look inside the blow up of a Hollywood marriage? This was a novel ripped from the gossip pages, exactly as promised.
A tough one to get through. The writing was all over the place and not at all good. Sometimes there was an entertaining joke, but for the most of this read it was painful and hard to get through. Very inconsistent.
If you like vapid characters this may be for you. Unfortunately, I couldn't relate. While some parts were funny, this one fell flat for me.
I really loved this book in a new to me author. The characters and location really and to the story. I can't wait to read the next one. This book keeps you guessing until the end.
This is a 2 ⭐️ star rating for me. While there was quirk and sarcasm, the story itself was all over the place. I felt no connection to the protagonist and what she was going through. The novel just felt disconnected to me.
Been There, Married That is the story of a Hollywood wife Agnes Murphy Nash who is blindsided when her husband put the kibosh on her marriage. It was the typical Hollywood ending, locks changed, credit cards canceled, and security guards denying entrance. The premise of the books was good, and the cover art really caught my attention. As much as I wanted to like this book, I really couldn’t get into it. The book was hard to follow at times and the characters didn’t have many redeeming qualities. I think the author wanted this to be a lighthearted story with lots of jokes and laughs, but it missed the mark to me.
I gave this book about 25% and just couldn't get into it. I normally enjoy this type of book but the characters just didn't develop for me. It seemed to almost be a bit too over the top Hollywood for my enjoyment.
Agnes Murphy Nash is the perfect Hollywood wife – she has the right friends, the right clothes, and even a side career of her own as a writer. Her husband Trevor is a bigshot producer, and from the outside it looks like they’re living a picture-perfect celebrity life, complete with tennis tournaments and lavish parties.
This was sublimely uninteresting to be. I couldn't relate to any of the characters, but particularly the main. She was so awkwardly distant from her own life that I wondered why I should care when she didn't.
I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Been There, Married That is hysterical. I was laughing out loud as I read this fantastic tale of love, hate and everything in between. I can't wait to read more from Ms. Levangie in the future.
5 out of 5 stars. Great read for the holidays, highly recommended!
