Warning. This is the first of a new mystery series and the end leaves you hanging. I did enjoy this book and will watch for the sequel. This book is set in the wilds of Alaska and I enjoyed the descriptions
Well written and very descriptive. While to me, the book felt repetitive with a lot of unnecessary details and parts, it as an enjoyable story.
As a best-selling author of thrillers, Beth Rivers knows a little something about how to hide, and she runs to Alaska to heal after a harrowing escape from an obsessive fan leaves her with a brain injury. Beth arrives on the heels of the suspicious death of one of the residents, and ends up renting a room at a half-way house for female felons. Before she knows it, she's taking over the town's newspaper and helping the sheriff investigate. I enjoyed the book and read it quickly in one day, and am looking forward to future entries in this new series.
This book really packed in the drama! An injured thriller writer, a mad man, locals with lots to hide. I enjoyed the Alaskan setting, it really set the mood for the action. It wasn't the best mystery I've read this year but it was fast paced and diverting.
I just loved this start to a new series from Paige and am now just disappointed at how long I have to wait for the next book in the series.
A famous crime novelist is kidnapped, and tortured by a stalker. She manages to escape after 3 days but suffered a severe brain injury and is left with only a few flashback memories of her captivity, no memory of what he looks like and only what she thinks is his name. She decides the only way to survive is to disappear until he is found. Luckily she writes under a pseudonym and very few people know her real name so she changes her appearance and using her real name of Beth Rivers she chooses what she thinks will be the perfect place to hide. Benedict, Alaska is a very small town of only 500 on an island reachable only by Ferry or plane so Beth should be safe there. However, she is totally unprepared for the harsh wildness of Alaska or the fact that Benedict is the home to lots of other quirky characters most of who are also there to hide from something or someone. The description of the surroundings and life in the wilds of Alaska as well as a town full of characters that are not all who they claim to be will keep the reader just as much on edge as Beth is. One death gets solved but the ending leaves lots and lots to be explored in future books, and I can’t wait.
Beth Rivers is an author and she is highly successful. So successful that she has acquired a Stalker. She also was kidnapped by said stalker and injured to the point of needing surgery on her head because of a sub-dermal hematoma.
The stalker has not been caught, so Beth Rivers is running away. She has come to Benedict, Alaska to get away from society and from crowds. She is hopeful that Levi Brooks, her stalker, won't be able to find her in the village of Benedict near Glacier Bay. Its population of 500 people and its non technical lifestyle (little cell phone reception or internet) should serve to allow Beth to hide.
The story works around the issue of Beth learning what it is like to live in a small town and one that is in the unforgiving Alaskan Wilderness. If she isn't eaten by a grizzly bear she might just freeze to death if stuck in a winter storm without proper apparel.
The story is very captivating. The situations are stimulating and somewhat frightening at times. The true nature of people comes out and our author describes them perfectly. Beth is plunged into a mystery as well as the rest of the town while she tries to hide her identity and hide from her stalker.
Being the first book of a series is always interesting. Will the book capture your attention enough that you will want to buy future books in the series? Will the characters be intriguing enough to hold your attention through multiple books? Is there enough tension, both romantic, relationally and circumstantially to keep you coming back for more?
The answer to those questions is "YES." You will fall in love with Beth Rivers and the cast of characters of the town of Benedict, Alaska, to keep you returning for more and more of the adventure. I have started following Paige Shelton so that I can be alerted to when the next book comes out on the market.
Enjoy!
This was kind of Northern Exposure meets Twin Peaks. Not a bad start to a new series but the setting of the small, isolated town in Alaska was really the star of this book. The story surrounding why Beth had to flee kept me interested and it appears to be an ongoing thing, which I like. The mystery Beth encountered after arriving was less interesting and not well developed, but rarely does the heart of these type books lie with the actual mystery. It's more about the characters and their relationships. The characters were interesting and I'm curious to see where things develop on the romance front, since there is always a romance, and this first installment was extremely lacking in that department. Also, this was NOT a cozy. The author is known for cozy mysteries but I would not feel comfortable giving this to my cozy mystery patrons mainly due to the overuse of foul language. Regular readers of light mysteries with a little bit of edge would probably find this to their liking. A solid 3 stars and I'm interested to see what happens next. Why did Beth get a warning about kayaking and the bay? I assume that comes up in a future book. Thank you for the DRC in exchange for an honest review.
As a fan of Alaskan based novels, I loved this title, but I was unaware it was a series. I was disappointed to find it to be a bit of a cliff-hanger without the resolution of one of the story lines (no spoilers from me!) I loved Beth and how she took to her new environment and neighbors with a cautions aplomb and can't wait to see what happens in the next title!
I've read some of Paige Shelton's previous novels, so I was excited to start this new series... I have to say it, I love Beth Rivers and her story. After partially recovering from trauma, Beth Rivers relocates herself to Alaska... unbeknownst to her, a half-way house for criminals. As she settles into her new community and tries to start over, bits and pieces from her trauma come to light... as well as an interesting mystery she gets wrapped up in. With a wonderful supporting cast - especially Gril, Donner, and Viola - Beth uses her skills as a mystery writer and part-time police secretary to help! It's a fantastic novel - a must-read for cozy mystery lovers. I can't wait to see where Ms. Shelton takes her next!!

4.5 Stars!!!
This my first time reading Paige Shelton and I promise you it won’t be my last! Thin Ice had my glued to kindle from the beginning. Centering around Beth Rivers, an author who has gone off the grid in Alaska to hide. Beth had been kidnapped by a monster and even though she escaped the fear and emotional scars still dominate her. Not knowing if her kidnapper will come back to terrorize her again has her looking over her shoulder and second guessing everything even in Alaska. Ohhhhhh my!!!
I really got wrapped up in this novel! Thin Ice is a page turning thriller that I am hoping will be turned into a loooooong series! Throughout the novel, I enjoyed getting to know the residents of the small Alaskan town and I’m keeping my finger crossed it won’t be last we read pf them (again I’d love to see this become a long running series lol)! I cannot believe it’s taken me this long to read a Paige Shelton novel, but I am so excited to dive into another!
Love this! I'm excited to have found a new-to-me author and the first book in her new series. I was hooked early on by the protag, by the setting, and by a group of quirky characters. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of them a little better.
Thin Ice (Alaska Wild Mysteries #1) is the first book I’ve read of Paige Shelton and enjoyed getting to know her characters and writing style. I loved the first chapter and the introduction of the main character, Beth. It hooked me from the start, and the storyline kept a fast pace with a solid mystery. The setting takes place in a fascinating Alaskan village, which the author describes well.
The ending had a bit of a cliffhanger on the secondary storyline, but overall an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more of this series and will check out the other books by this author.

First I've read by this author ... won't be the last. Stalking ... Kidnapping ... Hiding out .... New life ... Murder in a small town .... Story pulled me in from the beginning and I hated to put it down. I wasn't crazy about the murder mystery that Beth becomes involved in when she moves. I felt that the reason behind it was a little blah and wish it had more "meat" to it. However, with that being said the main story plot was quite enjoyable and I am looking forward to the next in the series to learn more about Beth's stalker/kidnapper and more about the mystery of what happened to her father.
3.5/5
Thank you #netgalley and #stmartins press for the eARC.
I’ve been excited to get my hands on Paige Shelton’s upcoming new mystery/suspense, Thin Ice, coming out this December. The main character Beth, a mystery author herself, is on the run from a dangerous stalker who kidnapped and attacked her.
I’ve been waiting for her to write outside her normal cozy genre (which are great btw) because I know she will appeal to mainstream readers. I‘m also partial to books with settings in Alaska. The cast of characters are promising in this new series. Gril the police chief, and Viola, the tough as nails woman who owns the place where Beth is staying.
A death in this small Alaskan town pulls them all together to determine if it was suicide or murder. Beth struggles to remember all that happened while she was kidnapped due to her brain injury. The ending was just right to keep you guessing for the next installment.
I wasn't able to finish this. It just didn't hold my attention--the writing style did not work for me.
Very enjoyable first book of what will clearly be a series. The ending is lackluster, but a good bridge into the next addition. I love books about Alaska, and this is a fun (if a little cheesy) one.
THIN ICE by Paige Shelton, the first book in the new Alaska Wild Mystery series, grabs the reader from the very first sentence and continues with suspense that had me on the edge of my seat for the entire read. The multi-plots kept the action going and I didn’t want to put it down until I read the very last page. Even then, I wanted the story to continue. As each of the characters are introduced, especially protagonist Beth Rivers, aka novelist Elizabeth Fairchild, the reader is treated to layers of reveal. This amps the suspense up as we slowly find out what each multi-faceted person is hiding. Ms. Shelton does an outstanding job developing the characters and having them adapt as the situation calls for. Beth, recovering from a severe head injury sustained while she escaped from a horrific kidnapping, has blocks of memory missing. Her captor has disappeared, and in fear of her life, Beth flees to Middle of Nowhere, Alaska, using her research as a thriller writer to escape her tormentor while remaining incognito.
The author captures the setting of the Alaska wilderness in an effective way. The reader feels the remoteness and can envision the brutality of nature, along with the stunning beauty. The wildlife is plentiful and often fierce, and Beth must learn to adapt to her new surroundings in order to survive. In addition to the suspenseful mystery surrounding Beth’s kidnapping, she finds herself embroiled in the middle of an investigation surrounding a suspicious death. Although it’s been deemed a suicide, not one of the townspeople believe it. With her past experience working with her grandfather, who had been a small-town police chief, Beth pieces together the puzzle of the death. With a heart pounding reveal that solves the murder mystery, the story comes to an end and leaves me waiting impatiently for the next book in this series!
