Another thorough, fascinating volume from the author of (the excellent) The Secret Lives of Color. The Golden Thread explores the history of textiles and cloth throughout the world. Well-researched and full of interesting facts and stories. Will appeal to history readers, artists, and anyone who likes a deep dive on an unusual subject.
Very well researched and interesting book. I would recommend it for those interested in textiles or history.
My only quibble is in chapter 8. Language matters and it would better received if book referred to enslaved people instead of slaves in the non-quoted portions.. The objectifying language is disappointing in an otherwise well-researched publication. It was surprising to see that in a book which carefully pointed out the clothing differences and why the color and fabric mattered.
