THIS BOOK SUCKS YOU IN! I just had to know what happened. Mary Kubica is a great writer and easy to read, I hate those books where they add to many details in it that aren't necessary. I'm a huge fan of multiple POV reads that switch back and forth between the past and present where you can piece the mystery together, and The Other Mrs. switches from present-day Sadies POV with the murder being investigated and then Camilles POV in the past on having an affair with Will in Chicago and then to a little girl named Mouse’s POV Thank you to @Netgalley and @Harlequin for allowing me to read an early readers’ copy in exchange for an honest review.
Sadie, Will and their two kids Tate and Otto move from Chicago to a tiny island in Maine only accessible by a ferry terminal when Wills's sister Alice commits suicide from chronically suffering from Fibromyalgia. She leaves everything to her brother in her will, including her sixteen-year-old daughter Imogen whom they have never met before. Sadie and Will are hoping that this will be a fresh start for their family not only with the move but also because of the affair Will had back in Chicago, the fact that their oldest son Otto was being harassed at his high school, and that Sadie was forced to withdraw from her last job because of a blackout that happened while on her shift that had caused a patient his life. Once, they've settled in and Sadie has somewhat gone back to her old customary routine as a doctor she gets a call from her husband while on her shift that a neighbor by the name of Morgan Baines had been murdered and it was likely someone from the small island that in its entirety is only a mile and half long. When police began going door-to-door investigating the community for alibis for the night of the murder and if there was any suspicious activity they remember seeing the week before Mrs. Morgan Baines was killed, Sadie and Will quickly reply with a no, they had been watching tv and had fallen asleep shortly after and that Sadie hadn't known Morgan because she was so busy with work and hadn't found the time to go introduce herself, unlike her husband who made it a priority to be friendly with all the neighbors because of his looser schedule of being a college professor. The detective finds this funny because an older couple later points out that Sadie and Morgan had gotten in an altercation shouting at each other in the Baines’ front yard and Sadie pulled out a chunk of Morgans hair a week before she was killed, so why would they lie about Sadie being there? In order to clear her name, she realizes she has to figure out who killed Morgan on her own.
Having read Mary Kubica before I was anticipating a great read and I was not disappointed. The Other Mrs. is a fact paced thriller that had me on the edge of my seat many times.
It is best to read this book with no pre-conceived notions. Do not read reviews that give anything away because when you think you have it figured out, you probably do not.
This thriller is gothic in nature, the old, creaky cold house becoming a character in the novel. Ms. Kubica brings the house and the isolated island in Maine to life with her highly crafted writing.
If you’re a fan of unreliable narrators and suspense, this book is for you. There was a lot to like for suspense/mystery/thriller fans.
This book would be great to read with a friend or a book club; great discussion on where it’s going and where it ends up.
I have listened to one of Kubica's earlier novels and I even have another one in my ever-growing TBR pile, but this is the first one of hers that I have physically read. It caught my attention with the remote Maine island setting. A family leaves Chicago for Maine in the aftermath of Will's sister's passing. He has inherited the house - and also his sixteen year old niece. With his wife and children in tow, they move into the crumbling house. The home, spooky neighbors and the isolation of the setting all combines to give this thriller a perfectly creepy atmosphere.
The book is split between multiple narrators and when a murder takes place down the street, the pace really gets moving! The narrative includes background on the family, too, and the past events in Chicago that made the move such a perfect decision. I must admit that I figured out the main plot twist very early on (I have a nose for this twist, as it's one of my favorite tropes!). But despite this, the book DEFINITELY still has plenty of surprises. I especially enjoyed the final climatic scene and I deeply appreciated the epilogue. I really enjoyed this one more than I expected to and am so glad to have read it! I just loved it!
I loved The Good Girl, Pretty Baby, and Every Last Lie by Mary Kubica. When I saw she had written another book I could not wait to read it.
The story is told in alternating characters. Throughout the book, you are trying to determine how the characters fit together. The ending is full of surprises. I defiantly recommend this book to Mary Kubica fans and fans of psychological thrillers.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
Let me start by saying Mary Kubica is an auto buy author for me. I buy her books without even reading the synopsis. I love her! This book didn't disappoint at all. Every time I thought I had figured out where it was going, I was wrong. I love being wrong about the endings!
Sadie and her husband Will have just inherited a house and a teenager after Will's sister commits suicide. They move from Chicago to a small, sleepy island in Maine in an effort to escape their past (including Will's affair) and start over together. Shortly after they move, however, their neighbor is murdered.
Who could have killed her on this remote island? And why is everyone so suspicious of Sadie? Sadie is intent on finding the killer and proving her innocence...but as she digs deeper, she's not sure she likes what she's finding out...
I have read a number of Kubica's other novels and haven't loved them all. I did enjoy reading this, though I saw one of the twists coming (and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it). If you are a fan of her other books, you will likely enjoy this one. She does take a leap, I'm just not sure how believable I found it to be.
this was a vacation beach read and PERFECT for that! 10% in I closed the book and announced that I'd figured out the ending. I was wrong. 30% in I closed it again making the same announcement - this time I was about 90% correct but the part that I missed was a pretty big twist that made the whole payoff worth it.
very interesting female characters, a frustrating series of events, a fast-paced read with a solidly satisfying ending.
4.5 stars, rounded up, I've already recommended this book to so many friends. It'll be the perfect summer read.
many thanks to Mary Kubica, Netgalley, and Harlequin for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I haven't read a book by Mary that I didn't enjoy, and The Other Mrs. continues that good read streak. From the very first chapter the mood and setting is set so perfectly. I found it the perfect read for a chilly, gray day. I can't wait for the Netflix film based on this novel.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
I don't want to give any spoilers, but it is a surprise to see how close an enemy can be. I was surprised how a doctor could be functioning through this. I had Mouse completely wrong. The family dynamics were so involved. Will , the husband, completely had me fooled. I couldn't believe how he used Sadie and Camille! I will be reading more of Mary Kubica!
Woah. This is a tough one to review without including spoilers. It’s everything I expect from Mary Kubica. While I tried to solve the many mysteries unfolding in The Other Mrs., Kubica is too good for my sleuthing skills and managed to elude me.
There were a couple of storylines that felt a little far-reaching, but all in all I think the pieces tied together to make for a great thriller. If you want a page turner that will definitely keep you guessing, I’d recommend The Other Mrs.!
Thank you Harlequin Books and Netgalley for a copy of The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica for an honest review.
The Other Mrs. is a very quick read. A lot hinted at and left unsaid at the beginning, little things learned along the way led to a lot of guesses, a lot of unexpected twists, and an ending that followed the little clues but still surprised me.
That being said, I’m not sure I loved this one. If it wasn’t for the pace, I probably would not have finished. Is that because I was in the wrong mood? Maybe. If you are loving twisty thrillers with a quick pace and a few perspectives and a surprising ending, this is probably the one for you! This one will be made into a Netflix series and I am very excited to see it on screen, I think it’ll work much better on screen.
CW: child abuse, past suicide on page and described in detail, mental illness.
As a huge Mary Kubica fan, I couldn't wait to read this book! While I enjoyed her previous books much more, this one was a bit more complex. We follow Sadie as she moves with her husband from their home in Chicago, giving up her job as an emergency room doctor, and pulling her sons out of school. Their new location, on a remote island off the coast of Maine is due to an inheritance, and guardianship of Will's moody niece. Then the murder happens. Suspicion falls on almost everyone at one point. The description of the atmospheric island is so detailed that you will actually feel like you are there with Sadie, isolated, stuck in a snow storm (never a good thing!). There was a lot of foreshadowing, so I was able to figure out what happened, but the why was a huge twist! As long as Ms. Kubica keeps writing, I know I'll always have a good book to read!
Thanks to NetGalley and HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) for an advanced reader's copy for review.

I just didn’t buy it!
The Other Mrs. is a psychological thriller about a wife and husband, the other woman, and murder in a small town.
Sadie and Will move from Chicago to a small town in Maine looking for a fresh start. Having inherited an old house and a creepy niece to care for, they have challenges ahead of them. When one of their neighbors is murdered, it hits too close to home, causing Sadie to lose herself in the drama surrounding the victim. But all is not what it seems, and Sadie is unknowingly putting her life in danger.
The Other Mrs. is a fast-paced read with an intriguing premise (I can’t say too much about the plot without giving the twist away). There are multiple POV’s: Sadie, a little girl named Mouse, “The Other Woman,” and Will. I figured out the twist early on, but I have read similar storylines and it is one I usually enjoy, so I didn’t mind this aspect as I was more interested in seeing how a certain issue was going to be revealed. I was chugging along and enjoying this until I got to the final chapters. This is where the book lost me, as another twist opened up a can of worms that had me asking question after question and shaking my head in sheer disbelief. What was a fun read quickly deteriorated into a mess that I couldn’t read my way out of.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
OMFG ... This book! My favorite yet by Ms Kubica and it was so freaking good I read it one day! Seriously, Ms Kubica's talent in this novel FAR OUTSHINES the previous books I read by her (and I consider those 5 star reads too). I loved every bit of intrigue and mystery in this captivating book, and while I hit the nail on the head considering a major plot, Ms Kubica still had a surprise in store for me at the end. The creepy setting also helps and adds character to this novel and I really rooted for and liked Sadie.
I am a huge Mary Kubica fan and was so grateful to receive a copy of her latest book “The Other Mrs.” for review.
It was a slow start for me and I didn’t love Sadie or the other characters. I wished for more development: backstory. I kept wondering how the sorry lines were going to connect and that is what kept me going. Also I tend to push through ARCs, even when I’m not enjoying them as I am grateful for the opportunity. I just didn’t like what I was reading unfortunately.
In particular, Imogen’s situation didn’t seem to logically fit in with where the book was going and as we learned more about her mother, I was repulsed. To clarify, not by anything Imogen did, but rather by the vulgar and repulsive description of death by hanging. I lost my dad this way and almost vomited by the dialogue AND description in this book. I am blown away by the author’s insensitivity to something like this. I’m not sure the photo aspect made any sense or contributing anything valuable to the story. I can try to understand the author’s motive of discussing mental illness but she failed; this was grotesque and offensive. Her little note at the end did nothing for me. A huge MISS here.
I truly wish I liked this book as much as her others but would most likely dissuade others from reading this.
Again, thanks Netgalley, MK, and Harlequin for the opportunity to read The Other Mrs. in exchange for an honest review. I hope I enjoy MK’s future endeavors more.
Loved this book. I was in the mood for a great thriller and this met my expectations. I think it is her best to date. She absolutely thought out of the box for this one. Even when something you might expect happens, it then takes an completely unexpected turn.
The Other Mrs. is a dark psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns. Just when you think you have figured it out think again.
**I received an electronic ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
Being a fan of psychological thrillers I figured out the main twist of this book pretty early on, however, there were a few others that I didn't see coming that I found to be shocking and enjoyable. This story is told from the point of view of three different female protagonists which makes for easy reading at a quick pace. I have read several books by this author and this is on the top of my list of favorites.

Something Wicked This Way Comes!
Imagine being married and not trusting your spouse. (That never happens in real life, lol!)
Enter Camille. Camille is a woman with an agenda. His name is Will.
Enter Sadie and Will and their two children. Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, their family has been uprooted from Chicago to a remote woodsy part of Maine. Almost sounds idyllic, until they roll up to their new home. An old creepy looking place, which inhabits their new stepdaughter, Imogene, who spews venom.
Home Sweet Home!
When Sadie and Will’s next door neighbor is murdered, life takes quite the turn. Chicago is looking better and better!
Oh What a Crazy, Wicked, Dark and Twisted read this was! I couldn’t help but be pulled into this wild story, turning the pages as fast as I could. While a few parts of this novel were a bit far-fetched, somehow I was able to look past them and carry on. “The Other Mrs.” is a pulse pounding psychological thriller that got me. Kudos to Mary Kubica for continuing to entertain and engage this reader.
Another fabulous buddy read with Kaceey!
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin - Trade Publishing and Mary Kubica for the arc.
Published on NetGalley and Goodreads on 3.7.20.
This was an entertaining read with a good cast of characters, a creepy setting, and a few twists along the way. I can't say I was a fan of how the last 1/3 of the book played out and felt that some of the twists weren't as twisty as they could have been.
