What a fantastic book. I have never read a book written by Mary Kubica, but I know I will be reading more. There are so many twists and turns in this book that I’m sure I would get whiplash but I loved it. Just when I was sure I had it all figured out then I would hit one of those wicked twists! Thanks for writing such a great book Mary!

Some spoilers in this review.

Really loved this. I raced through it. Quite the page turner. I know it’s an uncorrected proof but the typos were plenty and distracting.

I guessed the first couple twists, so it was a little predictable but I wasn’t at all bothered by that because it was so good!

I would have liked to see more of imogen. Maybe a little into her POV.

Possible spoiler ahead—-

I almost thought that it was mouse... and I thought perhaps mouse was the 6 year old who found the body— I almost wanted it to be! I feel like there was a few directions this could have gone and I’m not sure if I’m disappointed in the end or not. It was a good one and I wasn’t expecting will! Geez. I will say the ending was a bit unbelievable and everything with imogen is just too convenient. Was she there the whole time? She let Sadie “die” the first time? And then decided to save her the second time he tried to kill her? I just have a few issues with the end. But other than that I really loved the book. It was interesting and different. And while I suspected throughout that she was split, I had doubts in my theory and I was still guessing. And it was just messed up enough that I forgive the unbelievability of the ending.

This story has many characters and is told from many different point of views. I had a hard time keeping all the story lines straight. I guessed early where the story was headed. There were some twists and turns and the last third of the book kept me hooked. This is a good beach read

The Other Mrs., another thriller by Mary Kubica, shares the twisted story of Will & Sadie Foust after fleeing Chicago to take over Will’s sister’s estate on an East Coast island. They move with their two children to Will’s late sister’s home and in with their niece Imogen.

The family thought they may have left their problems behind in Chicago, but things on the island intensify after a neighbor of the Foust’s is found murdered in her home.

Told from the POV of many characters, including a young girl who is abused by her stepmother, the “other woman” Sadie thought Will left behind, and the rest of the Foust family, each narrator weaves together the pieces of what has happened.

I enjoyed this thriller and often found myself convinced the murdered was one person, and then quickly thinking it was someone else. It wasn’t my favorite novel by Kubica, but I found myself not eating to put it down and discover what the heck was happening on this island town.

The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica is a psychological thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Harlequin – Park Row, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

Will Foust is a stay-at-home Dad to 14 year-old Otto and 7 year-old Tate.  He lectures at a university on occasion.  He seems like the perfect husband and father.  Well, if you don't count his wandering eye, and....

Camille is obsessed with Will, and would do anything just to be by his side.

Mouse is a six-year old girl who lives with her Dad and her abusive "Fake Mom".

Sadie is Wills' wife, and is aware of his last affair.  When she found out, at the same time that Otto got suspended from school, Sadie had a bit of a break-down, and lost her job. The family needs a fresh start, so she agrees to move their family from Chicago to a small island off the coast of Maine when her husband inherits his sisters house.  They also inherit her 16-year old daughter, Imogen.

When the body of their neighbour, Morgan Baines, is found murdered, the entire island is shocked.  When the police start looking at her, Sadie is confused, and knows she will have to figure out who the murderer is before her family is torn apart.

But not all is as it first appears.  Someone is lying.

My Opinions:

Well, that was different.  The tale was a little convoluted, a little twisted, and quite good.  I do admit, however, that it took me a bit to get into.  I couldn't quite relate to the characters at first, and it seemed slow-moving.  However, the slow pace definitely contributed to the build-up in suspense.

The story is told from different points of view, but it quickly becomes evident that we may have at least one unreliable narrator.  As the book progresses, we are still not sure what or who to believe.  The characters are all interesting, but I admit that my favorite was Mouse, and then Imogen.  I didn't particularly like Sadie or Will.

Although I had initially identified the murderer, a major twist appeared that had me second-guessing myself -- six or seven times.   That is the sign of a good mystery!

The book explored family dynamics as well as mental health issues.

Overall, a good read!

The Other Mrs. is a mystery/thriller that centers around a family that just moved to a small Maine island. Sadie Foust and her husband Will made the move to Maine after the suicide of Will’s sister. She left them her house on the island, which comes with her rebellious teenaged daughter, Imogen. Sadie does not get along with moody Imogen from the get-go but due to marital troubles in her marriage to Will, the move from busy Chicago to quiet Maine was a necessity.

Shortly after the family’s arrival on the island their neighbor, Morgan Baines, is found death at her home. The brutal murder takes everyone by surprise, but Sadie is taken aback when suspicion shifts toward her family. She moves quickly to uncover the identity of the real murderer but is not prepared for what she finds.

Pretty early on in the book I felt secure in the knowledge that I had figured out the mystery, but this thriller throws out some last-minute unexpected twists that really solidified the story and my enjoyment of it. Even when I thought I knew how everything would turn out I still very much enjoyed every moment.

In my opinion, a good thriller doesn’t just deliver clever twists and turns and edge of your seat thrills, it also offers a fast paced, addictive quality of writing that keeps you turning pages. The Other Mrs. offers all of those things plus a full picture of what it is that drives these characters to behave the way they do. I’ve read thrillers where it’s hard to believe how events turn out, thrillers that offer very little explanation or crazy, out of this world explanations. The Other Mrs. tries very hard to account for every revelation with a plausible explanation and I appreciated this very much.

I definitely recommend you pick this up ASAP. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Sadie and Will Foust have just moved a small island of Maine, which is so close knit, with a ferry to transport people to the nearest city leaving only a few times a day. An unfortunate suicide has happened in the family and Will has moved to look after his estranged niece, Imogen. Shortly after they move in, there is a murder on the street they live in and all eyes are on the new family as suspects. Sadie begins to take the investigation into her own hands, but she starts to discover things and wishes she had left alone!
This book is told from three different viewpoints, Sadie, a cool character, Mouse, a very clever sox year old and Camille, who obviously has some underlying problems. Each perspective brings different clues as to what is happening and an eerie presence is created
Overall, I enjoyed this book, but only one third of the ways, did I guess what was happening. Maybe this is because I read too many of these type of books and I should mix my genres up a bit!! The book felt suspenseful, creepy and a lot of tension was created. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters, but given the author’s style of writing, I think that was the intention
If you have enjoyed the authors previous work and authors such as Lisa Jewell, JP Delaney and Gilly Macmillan, then this is a perfect book for you!

Holy slow burn with a twist! Mary Kubica does it again with The Other Mrs.!

Song/s the book brought to mind: Honestly by Gabbie Hanna

I don't know why it has been my theme lately, but I've been reading a lot of slow burns and this includes The Other Mrs. When I was reading it I found that I wasn't as much in the mood for another slow burn, but I decided to switch to audio thanks to a friend and I am so glad I did! Once I started the audio I found that I was much more into it and I'm sure this is in part thanks to the main narrator, Piper Goodeve. She made for a fantastic narrator and made a so-so book for me into something much more interesting.

As far as characters go, Sadie was such a frustrating character for me and there was more than one time I was yelling at my book. I wasn't a huge fan of her overall, but in the end I was rather endeared to her because of certain things that happen. Part of the reveal I saw coming because I've read another book with a similar plot, but there was also a major twist that I did not see coming at all.

Mary Kubica is one of my favorite authors as well as an auto-buy for me, and while The Other Mrs. was a slow start I ended up enjoying it overall. You'll have to suspend a little bit of disbelief for this book but trust me, it's worth it!

Thank you to the publisher for my advance review copy via NetGalley. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Oh Mary Kubica you have done it again. Taken me on that wild ride of a book. Just read this and hang on. The other mrs. Will keep you from socializing for awhile

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica.

Sadie and Will have just moved from big city life to a small New England town. But it doesn't take long until after the move before a neighbor is murdered. But it turns out that despite the new location, Will and Sadie are connected to the victim. Nobody feels safe, except of course, the person who committed the murder.

I think I've read too many books like this, so I'm not sure I'm the best person to give a review. It was enjoyable enough, but I was probably about 30% into it when I figured out what was going on. However, it was still a fun thriller and full of surprises all along the way, so it's worth taking to the beach!

I've read this story before, you probably have too. Annoying characters and super simplistic writing. Not recommended for anyone.

What a wild ride! This book is a tension-filled slow burn that hits big when all of the story's mysteries are uncovered. I was definitely impressed with Mary Kubica's 'The Other Mrs.', and would totally recommend it to friends. With layers upon layers of deceit to unravel, readers are easily captivated by Kubica's story of a family who moves to Maine after a tragic death, escaping their own demons at the same time. As we slowly learn the whole family's complicated past, we find fewer characters to trust, and even what we think we know gets turned on its head. Loved this complex and twisty tale from Mary Kubica -truly an original in a sea of psychological thrillers!

Sadie and Will Foust have just relocated their family from busy Chicago to a small island town in Maine. This new town brings new challenges, starting with getting to know the niece they’re now in charge of caring for due to an untimely death of her mother. As the family works to adjust to new schools, new jobs, and new relationships their world is rocked by news that their neighbor Morgan Baines has been found murdered in her home.

Sadie is instantly on edge when the news of Morgan’s murder reaches her. Concern for her family and the notion that a murderer may be living within their small community rattle her. In order to cope, Sadie begins to launch her own investigation into this mystery, but what she finds may not be what she wanted to uncover. The more Sadie learns about Morgan, the more she feels the threat of this death revealing pieces of her own life she hoped to keep hidden.

Mary Kubica is one of those names that has earned their mark in the thriller/crime fiction who’s who arena. Her books are ones that I have come to look forward to each year and ones I know I’ll enjoy. THE OTHER MRS. was no exception to this statement! Kubica is back gifting readers an exciting domestic thriller that will keep the reader on their toes!

THE OTHER MRS. gives the reader three alternating POVs with which we meet Sadie, the matriarch of the Foust family; Camile, the other woman; and Mouse, a young girl struggling with an intense stepmother. Each perspective gives the reader subtle hints through their storylines towards the truth of what is happening in Sadie’s new life. These narrators are connected with the main story in one way or another, but it isn’t instantly obvious how they relate. Each narrator was distinctive and had their own unique voice and way in which to tell the narrator their information. The level of detail that Kubica puts into her books truly shined through with these characters and how easy it was to connect with them.

As if trying to figure out how these characters are all connected isn’t hard enough, Kubica also continually throws in twists and turns to Sadie’s story as the book accelerates. I love being kept on my toes while reading. I’m constantly coming up with theories as to what I think is happening in the book and where the author is ultimately planning to take the story. This time around I was super close to the truth, but didn’t have all the pieces figured out. One thing I really enjoyed about this book was that Kubica gave the reader her big reveal before the last few pages of the book. She gifted the reader with several chapters afterwards addressing how everything played out with the aftermath of the truth being revealed. So often I feel like authors take the approach of here’s the massive twist and end scene. Kubica was able to make the story so much more by not taking that approach.

If you’re looking to get into the domestic thriller genre this book is a perfect launching point! If you’re looking for something a little different in the genre that doesn’t check all of the same boxes we see repeated far too often then this is the book for you!

As a side note, I want to thank Kubica for her fantastic personal author’s note at the end of the book. Don’t read this before the story because it gives things away, but make sure to read it after because it truly shows the passion Kubica had behind this book.

A huge thank you to Harlequin Books for sending me a free copy of this book!

First line: There’s something off about the house.

Summary: When Will’s sister dies, he is left in charge of her estate and teenage daughter. Sadie and Will move from bustling Chicago to a small island town in Maine. Several weeks after moving in their next door neighbor is murdered. This rocks the small town. As Sadie is drawn into the murder investigation her life begins to unravel and secrets from the past may have followed them to this idyllic island.

My Thoughts: This is my first interaction with Mary Kubica’s writing. I enjoyed the story, the writing and the characters. However, very early on I guessed one of the major plot twists. It seemed rather obvious but maybe I have read too many thrillers? But even when it is revealed I was shocked by other revelations that tied in with it. I found the pacing quick and the story to be engaging. I am looking forward to trying a few other books by Kubica in the future.

I really enjoyed and wished we could have had more interactions with Imogen, Will’s niece. Scenes with her were my favorites. I wanted to know more about her. I loved the scene in the graveyard. She was a complex character that always caused a little friction.

FYI: This is optioned to be a Netflix film.

Sadie and Will Foust have only just moved their family from bustling Chicago to small-town Maine when their neighbor Morgan Baines is found dead in her home. The murder rocks their tiny coastal island, but no one is more shaken than Sadie. But it’s not just Morgan’s death that has Sadie on edge. And as the eyes of suspicion turn toward the new family in town, Sadie is drawn deeper into the mystery of what really happened that dark and deadly night. But Sadie must be careful, for the more she discovers about Mrs. Baines, the more she begins to realize just how much she has to lose if the truth ever comes to light. review: This domestic thriller was full of twists and had an ending that will leave you shocked! I had been in a rut with thrillers lately but this one got me out of my slump. I always love unreliable narrators and the characters in this book really made for a fun page turner. The small island town really added to the overall creepy vibe of this book and I really enjoyed the well-developed characters. If you need another thriller to read sure, add this one to your list! rating: 4 out of 5 ⭐️

Mary Kubica writes such addicting thrillers. It's so easy to just get swept up in her books. The Other Mrs. kept flashing between various storylines and narrators and it took quite a while for everything to start coming together due to plenty of twists and turns!

Murder in a small Maine town.

When a woman is murdered in Sadie’s new town, she begins to search for answers. As she uncovers the lies surrounding the murder, she also must confront truths about the people closest to her, her new community, and herself.

Overall we enjoyed this one, but it was a bit too twisty (didn’t think we would ever say that!).

Mary Kubica has done it again. With The Other Mrs, she has solidified her spot as one of the top contemporary suspense novelists. The Other Mrs is the story of Sadie, who recently relocated with her family from Chicago to a small island off the coast of Maine. Soon after her arrival on the island, one of her neighbors is murdered, and she quickly becomes the top suspect. Told from various viewpoints, this story kept me guessing right up until the “big reveal” near the end of the book. The way in which the twist was finally revealed was unexpected and oh-so-enjoyable. I had an idea of what was going on, but it still took me by surprise. As a fan of Kubica's other books, I had high hope for The Other Mrs, and I wasn’t disappointed. Also, look at that cover art! I love it. If you haven’t read this one yet, check it out.

Mary Kubica has the intricacies of relationships down pat. Throw in mental illness, the unrecognized pain of Fibromyalgia and child abuse and only she would write this story.

The Faust family make a necessary move to Maine. There, they movie into Will’s sister’s house. It is old and comes complete with his sullen and defiant 16-year-old niece that they’ve never met. If that is no enough dysfunction, a neighbor is murdered a short time after their arrival.

With the setup for certain disaster, the surprises come fast and furious. The complex characters unfold gradually giving depth to their personalities while dropping bombshells, one after the other.

This is sure to be a tremendous success and one of the must-read books of 2020.
