Mary Kubica is really the master at the slow ride thriller. It starts off with a simmer and then heads into a full boil of twists and shocks. It can be a little forgotten moment or a big old house filled with corners that will make you try to figure out just what the heck is going on. The story is told in three separate voices. Sadie is a doctor who has moved with her family into her husband’s sister’s old house. It also comes along with his dark, angry niece. A murder occurs in the little town and things don’t add up for Sadie. We also have Camille, a seductress who seems to want Sadie’s husband to herself. Then there is Mouse, a quiet little girl whose life turns upside with the arrival of her “fake” mom.
The three narrators give us a different view of what is going on. I felt that I knew what was going on and I partly did, I will only say that much. There were some things that were so dark that I didn’t realize what was going on. This is another hit in the thriller/mystery realm of Mary Kubica. It is definitely a page turner!
Thanks to Netgalley and Park Row for an advance copy of this book.
The book blurb really drew me in but for me, the story started off slowly. Fortunately, the plot picked up and by the end, I was really happy with the book. Many twists and turns kept my interest and I stayed up way too late to finish it! I would highly recommend reading this if you like thrillers.
Whew, Mary Kubica has done it again ya'll. She is one of my auto buy authors for a reason, I absolutely love her writing style. The Other Mrs checks all the boxes that I expect out of my psychological thrillers. Talk about some creative and sinister twists! While if I'm being honest I had kind of guessed where it was going but was then shocked when she took it even further. I absolutely loved this book, five stars all the way around. Definitely check this book out on February 18th when it is published.
** Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review. **
Sadie & Will have just moved from Chicago to a small town in Maine to become the guardians of Will's niece, Imogene, after her mom commited suicide. Right after they moved in a neighbor is brutally murdered and the entire community is shaken. Sadie is afraid that her family may be in danger and starts trying to find out more, but the more the digs the more she wishes she had just left buried.
This book is told in the voices of Sadie, Camille (who fell in love with Will first but he left her for Sadie and she never got over it), and a little girl named Mouse. I don't want to tell you anything more because I don't want to give anything away, so let me just say that Mary Kubica is a master storyteller. You will not regret reading this book!
This was my first book by Mary Kubica that I just finished it after devouring it over the last few days. I am going to go back now and read all of her backlisted books.
I loved the characters in The Other Mrs. and all of the other unreliable supporting characters in this one. Very interesting ride with trying to figure everything out.
The thriller genre is alive and kicking in TheSouthernGirlReads life 🤗.
It’s been a while y’all. Too long since I have read a psychological thriller and loved it.
The Other Mrs. had everything I needed.
.
Twisty turns
Memorable characters
Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere
I loved it. In all my smarty pants glory, I thought I had the whole thing figured out midway. Delightfully enough, I was wrong...and rightfully so!
I’m not going to speak on the novel too much...cause you know. I’m not a fan of spoilers. I will say, this book offered a different plot and it worked so well for me.
The thriller lover is back!
I’m ending with four stars. I loved it....but if I’m being fair it did drag a bit in the middle.
If you are in the mood for a twisty ride, pick up The Other Mrs.!
The Other Mrs is sure to be a crowd pleaser!
A tightly woven twisty tale of domestic drama, dysfunction, and intrigue. This fast-paced thriller will have your head spinning and stomach churning as you struggle to keep up with Mary Kubica's hairpin plot twists. The characters, most especially Mouse, elicit a strong emotional response. Things are seldom as they seem.
The Other Mrs checks all the boxes. Kubica will keep you guessing from beginning to end!
I'm seriously having legit vertigo after reading this one with all the twists and turns!!! I didn't know up from down most of the book! I love thrillers like this and this latest by Mary Kubica does not disappoint. This is the Brenda Novak book club pick for March which is why I wanted to read it but I am SO glad I did. Who doesn't love a creepy old house with weirdo neighbors and family secrets on a remote island? Highly recommend this fast-paced thriller. Thank you to the publisher for the early copy and Net Galley!
Mary Kubica WOW girl! This book was simply amazing. She really knows how to take you for a ride. I loved how the characters developed throughout the story. Talk about twists! Don’t bother guessing because you will not figure this one out. This was my second novel of this author and I can’t wait for the next.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Park Row, and Mary Kubica for the opportunity to read and review her latest psychological thriller - definitely a book that has lots of twists and will keep you guessing until the ending!
The Foust family - Will, Sadie and their two boys, Otto and Tate - move to Maine when Will's sister dies by suicide. They inherit the house and become guardians to Imogene, a troubled teenager who is none too happy with her new living situation. The Foust's are looking for a new start - in Chicago, Otto was being bullied at school, Will had an affair and Sadie had to resign from her medical position. But things take a bad turn when a neighbor, Morgan Baines, is found dead in her home by her young stepdaughter.
The book is told from Sadie's point of view as well as Camille and Mouse. Figuring out all the twists will keep you up late in the night! Another winner from Mary Kubica.
The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica was definitely an interesting read. The story revolves around a woman named Sadie and her family who recently moved to a small island off the coast of Maine. They are all aiming for a fresh start after a series of negative events in their previous city. Not long after the family moves in, one of their neighbors is found murdered and for some reason it seems like the police are focused on Sadie as a suspect. But why? Sadie didn’t even know the woman who was murdered. Why do the police keep questioning her? Why aren’t they looking for the real killer? And is this small town really that safe?
What I liked: The story is told from 3 perspectives and while some connections are revealed early, the reader is left guessing how these three narrators are really linked. One storyline I believe is purposely written to make you think you know who that person really is, but it also seems way too obvious at the same time. I think the author did a great job of making you wonder where the story was going and who these three narrators actually were. Towards the end of the book, the author starts dropping some hints into one of the storylines that makes you realize things are not at all what they seem. I enjoyed the slow reveal as I tried to put the pieces together. The clues were just enough to keep you reading and to keep you guessing. At the end of the story, another perspective is added with a final twist that I didn’t see coming. I also liked that the ending had closure for all the characters and the reader was not left hanging.
What I didn’t like: The language. One of the teenage character’s language was horrific. I know the author was trying to convey that she was a troubled young woman, but I felt it was a little too much. Also, I found the scenes from the little girl’s perspective to be very hard to read toward the end. Those scenes were actually very disturbing to me. I am still going back and forth with whether I actually liked the main character Sadie. Sometimes she was written as a strong woman and other times she seemed like a complete pushover. I also thought that someone intelligent enough to be a doctor would not have made some of the really poor decisions she made in the story. She took things too far in some cases even committing crimes to investigate the murder of a woman she didn’t know. I will say that once you read the ending it does explain some of her behavior throughout the novel, but there are still things I questioned.
Overall, a story filled with a lot of twists and turns. It was worth the read to me, but definitely has some negative aspects with the language and some of the disturbing scenes. But if you are looking for a thriller that keeps you guessing, I say give it a try. I would actually put this one at 3.5 starts if I could.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for an ARC of this book!
Twist and turns and a shocking ending. Keeps you wanting to turn another page and another and another - til you are up all night.
Sadie and Will have moved from Chicago to a small town in Maine. One, they need a fresh start. Someone had an affair. Two, Will's sister has died and he has inherited a large home and a surly teenager. Plus there was an incident with their son Otto at school.
Imogene is the one who found her mother dead and she is not happy about Will and Sadie and their two boys showing up. She is scary!
Shortly after they move in a neighbor, Morgan Baines, is killed in her home. A neighbor swears he saw Morgan and Sadie fighting, but Sadie has never met Morgan.
This is one messed up family! Every single character had some serious issues! And the twists and turns almost gave me whiplash! What??? I was on the edge of my seat the entire book!

Nail-biting, heart-thumping psychological thriller. Loved it! 4.5 Stars.

Mary Kubica is a gifted author. I have read and enjoyed many of M Kubica's books. This one will soon be on the bestseller list.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and give an honest review.
DNF at 28% - there are a lot of threads going on but I wasn’t feeling connected to any of them. I may be in a thriller slump but this one wasn’t working for me. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reading copy.
My copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to the the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review it.
One reason I enjoy psychological thrillers is that I can never figure them out. I never see the twists coming and am always, yes always, surprised at the end. If I do try to guess what the twists are, I might as well just not try, because, you guessed it, I’m wrong. With all that in mind, let me say that early on I figured out most of the twists in this book. Not all of them, of course, but enough for the book to lose a lot of its appeal. To be fair, the couple of twists I didn’t see coming were pretty good; the one at the end, impressive.
As for the rest of the book, I thought the writing was less than riveting and, other than the end, uneven in its pace. I did like that the story was told through multiple points of view, although only one was even close to being a likable person (Mouse). The main character, Sadie, was a doctor and mother of two. But, she seemed to be completely devoid of compassion for her niece, her coworkers and even, at times, her children. I was also unhappy with the direction Mouse’s story took. I don’t like even the slightest hint of child abuse in a book and would normally avoid it. Although it was an extremely small part of the book, it still bothers me.
This book is so good. My attention was grabbed from the beginning until the end which left me with a wow “I didn’t see that coming” I love a good mystery and suspense storyline where I am trying to figure out who the culprit is and the author has so many different plots and twist, it just keeps me guessing. The author’s characters were so well developed. You can feel their emotions and what they are going throughout the book.
This is my first time reading a book by this author and I look forward to reading more books by her. I highly recommend this book to read especially if you love mystery and suspense storylines, you will not be disappointed.

I received a ARC from Netgalley and this review is of my own honest opinion.
This is my fave Mary Kubica book!! Don't blink or you might miss a plot twist! The setting is rich in detail on a mystery roller coaster of a story!! So good! Thank you NetGalley for the chance to review it!
Mary Kubica has quickly become one of my must-read authors. The first book of hers I read, The Good Girl, was different from what I'd been reading at the time and fully engaged me. After that, I read When the Lights Go Out and was stunned at how much better this book was and how quickly I got sucked into it. Beginning to see a pattern? I hope so because The Other Mrs. honestly topped the other two by a large margin.
I thought setting the story on a small island with very limited access an intriguing one. There's only one way on and off the island - via ferry (or, in a pinch, water taxi) - so if you miss the boat or the weather is bad, there's no way on or off the island. Reminded me a bit of the old horror novels set in a creepy mansion where no one can leave.
The characters are intriguing as well. I had a love/hate relationship with Sadie. I liked her a lot in the beginning, got a little irritated with her in the middle, but understood her much better by the end. Will was a little too good of a husband at times and eventually you find out why, or you think you do anyway. Camille had me scratching my head at times, unsure of how she really fit into the picture. However, once you figure that out, the rest of the novel goes sideways.
This author is known for her thrilling tales of suspense as well as giving you one heck of a twist at the end. However, this time, you get a couple of really good ones that leave you wondering what the heck just happened. The first twist, I sort of saw coming, but was still a little surprised when it was revealed. The other big one at the end? That floored me, but in a good way. I was not disappointed in the least when this book ended and am eager to dive into the books on her back list I haven't read yet.
Wow! Just Wow! Mary Kubica had done it again. I have yet to read a book by Kubica that I didn't enjoy! The other Mrs. Captivated me right from the start. Kubica's writing sucks me right in, making her read a gripping page turner, I had speculations of who murdered the neighbor across the street, but I did not see that twist ending of who actually murdered the neighbor coming.
A brutal island murder, the suspect still at large making Sadie feeling on edge. Strange things keep happening. Is Sadie loosing her mind or is someone pretending to be her? Sadie finds herself doing things she normally wouldn't do in determination to discover who killed the neighbor. Is she in danger and will her discovery of what really happened put her at ease or ultimately destory her.
