Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy of Mary Kubica's The Other Mrs. All opinions are my own!
I've been addicted to Kubica's writing since I read Pretty Baby, so I was really excited to see a title by her on here. I think I'm still recovering from all the twists and turns this book took me on, and it's been over a week since I finished it. I was shocked by the ending of this book and found myself re-reading parts of it to make sure it was actually as crazy as I thought it was. (Spoiler alert, it was.) I definitely recommend this book for anyone who has liked anything by Kubica in the past or is into psychological thrillers.
Ms. Kubica seems to be a complete hit or miss for me, either a 5 or a 2. I told myself this was the make or break book deciding whether or not I continued to read her books. Well, it was better than several of the books I have read from her, but now where near a 5. It might have been, it was up until about 80% and then it fell off the side of a cliff. Like, Bobby waking up in the shower on Dallas kind of a cliff. I realize there has to be some way to tie everything together but I felt like Ms. Kubica took and easy out. And then maybe she felt it was too easy of an out so she added some more but instead of making up for the deficiency, it seemed to muddle the whole thing even more. Like I said in my review of When the Lights Go Out, "if you can enjoy the first 90% of a book and then be fine with however it is ended, then this would be a really good book to read. But I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not feeling let down by the ending." The same comment holds true for this book, except the tipping point was at about 80%, giving more time to ruin all the gleeful suspense!
So I was a little smug while reading this book because I figured the twist out pretty quickly. So the second twist was a delightful surprise. This was a chilling suspenseful novel and I really enjoyed it. Whether I will sleep tonight is a different story.
I finished reading The Other Mrs. this morning. Mary Kubica's books have been on my tbr shelf for awhile, but no longer; they will all be getting read now. Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Just when I would think I would have the story all figured out, there would be more twists. This story had me guessing all the way to the very end. This book covers a subject that has greatly interested me for a long time. I won't discuss it as it could be a major spoiler. The author did a wonderful job on a difficult subject. The characters were all very well written. I highly recommend! Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
Each chapter in this book is told from the viewpoint of one of the characters. Sadie Foust, a doctor and mother of two, is married to Will. They have moved to a house in Maine that was owned by Sadie’s sister who committed suicide, where they become the guardian of their niece, Imogen, a troubled sixteen year old. The move to Maine was helped along by issues with one of their boys as well as Sadie’s job. When their neighbor is found murdered in her home, Sadie becomes a suspect. And as she finds clues to what happened that night, she begins to feel like she is falling into a depp abyss with no answers as to why. For about 80% of this book, there was little direction, but once the background is over and the action begins, the truth made for an interesting story. Plenty of twists, but not my favorite. My thanks to Harlequin Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel.
The Other Mrs. is a hard one to talk about without giving away to much. I put off reading this because I kept seeing things about the creepy house and got it in my head it was a haunted house story, which it was not. So glad I finally got around to reading it was creepy but not because of the house.
Sadie our primary protagonist point of view always felt a little unstable which led to a sense of unease throughout the book. The other perspectives were helpful in rounding out the story and adding depth to the mystery as you try to figure how each fits in. There were a few twists and turns and while some of them were expected how they presented in their full glory at the end was well done and made for an enjoyable thriller/mystery.
Thank you NetGalley, HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review. And thank you Mary Kubica for another enjoyable read!
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book. This was a typical twisty thriller by Kubica. Definitely recommend.
I’m not sure if it’s because I read a lot of thrillers, but I knew the main plot twist bye 30-ish pages in. I found out really disappointing.
This book is about Will and Sadie and their family who move to a small town in Maine after Will’s sister’s untimely death.
I did like that the book was nicely paste and was a quick read. However, I had a bit of an issue with some things being slightly unbelievable. The ending felt a bit rushed and hurried but was OK. I would recommend this to someone who is new to psychological thrillers.
Sadie & Will Foust have just moved their family to a remote island in Maine after they inherit a home from Will's sister along with the responsibility of taking care of his very troubled, orphaned niece. Shortly after they move in, a neighbor is murdered and the new family is immediately in the crosshairs.
I figured out a big piece of the puzzle very early on but it didn't make the story less compelling and there were plenty of unexpected twists to come.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Books for allowing me to read an advance copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Another psychological thrill ride from Mary Kubica!
Sadie, Will and their two sons find themselves moving from Chicago to a small island in Maine after inheriting Will's deceased sisters house along with guardianship of their troubled niece, Imogen. Hoping for a new start after marital problems (an affair) and their fourteen year old son getting in trouble at his previous school for bringing a knife in his bag, what they find is anything but. Soon after their arrival a neighbor is found to have been stabbed to death and suspicion falls on the new neighbors.
Told from four POV's with a deft hand, the tension builds as the plot twists and turns into an unputdownable page turner. Even though one of the plot points comes into view early on, the ultimate reveal and conclusion was something I didn't see coming and I loved it! I'm sure both old and new fans of the author will relish this one and I highly recommend you picking this one up!
“The Other Mrs.” by MK is an addicting psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.
Sadie and Will Foust have just moved their family from bustling Chicago to small-town Maine when their neighbor Morgan Baines is found dead in her home. As eyes of suspicion turn toward the new family in town, Sadie is drawn deeper into the mystery of what really happened that dark and deadly night. But Sadie must be careful, for the more she discovers about Morgan, the more she begins to realize how much she has to lose if the truth ever comes to light.
OMG - first off I need someone to talk to about when I had the rug pulled from under me with that surprising twist. I had no idea that was coming!! I wish I could talk about it more, but I can’t!! Okay, now I can dive into my thoughts! ha.
This was first the novel by this author! At first I wasn’t sure what was going on - who was the bad guy, etc. The story is told from multiple perspectives - Sadie, Camille (Sadie’s previous roomie), and Mouse (a little girl). We have no idea the reasoning for their POV until of course the end when it connects together. Sadie is the primary POV of the story and she is well-liked character who just wants to be a good Mom, wife, and doctor when all of a sudden she is accused of having something to do with Morgan’s murder.
My only issue I was confused about the relationship between Will and his sister and why they haven’t spoken. You find out that Will’s sister committed suicide and left behind the house and her daughter, Imogen (who is super creepy, btw) to take care of, but that’s about it.
Overall, great thriller. Most seasoned thriller readers I”m sure will guess the massive plot twist, but overall a very satisfying read. Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC.

Ok, but not great - I kind of figured out the main twist pretty early (just by thinking the opposite of what everyone appeared to be) but it was only at the end when it all made sense, but even then I thought there were too many coincidences to be believable.
The plot and character motivations seemed too complicated and farfetched.
I did not feel connected to any of the characters and the child abuse of Mouse kind of put me off for the rest of the book.
The Other Mrs. is a captivating story. Mary Kubica knows how to capture the reader’s attention. She provides a thrilling read that will keep you guessing how this story will end.
Well, I didn't see that coming! That's the best way I can think of to describe The Other Mrs. It's fun, weird, quick and what-the-hell. If you've ever wondered what's happening in your own brain, or someone else's, then watch out, because this book will keep you on your toes. I read it in a weekend, and didn't want to put it down!
The Other Mrs. comes out 2.18.2020.
4.5/5 Stars
This was my first book by Mary Kubica, and now I know who to turn to when I want to read a great psychological thriller. I could not put this book down, due to the fact that for the majority of the book I had no idea what was going on. I had so many theories and ideas of what was going on, and eventually I did figure it out before it was revealed. But the ride to get there, was spectacular! So many different characters who tell their story, I really enjoyed the development of each. Everything was executed so well, you can tell Kubica is a thriller veteran. The story gave me some Turn of the Key type eerie vibes as well. It was a well put together, interesting read that definitely kept my interest!
She tried to run, but she can’t escape the other Mrs.
Sadie and Will Foust have only just moved their family from bustling Chicago to small-town Maine when their neighbor Morgan Baines is found dead in her home. The murder rocks their tiny coastal island, but no one is more shaken than Sadie.
The Other Mrs. is so far the best Mary Kubica book that I´ve read.
Told from different POV this domestic thriller is filled with twists and turns that take readers on an amazing ride. You won`t be able to put the book down.
This is a dark and entertaining thriller, highly recommended. This title will be released on February 18
Thanks to Park Row and NetGalley for sending me this ARC COPY in exchange for my honest review. #NetGalley #TheOtherMrs.
I had been in a slump on my ARC picks from NetGalley but boy oh boy did I hit a home run with the newest book by Mary Kubica, I thank the author and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read this awesome read. I loved it!!!!
This book has it all, that old creepy feeling that makes you smile, even sometimes outright laugh, a mystery that takes so many twists and turns you continue to guess in the wrong direction and the best ending I have read in a long, long time. I can’t really explain how you know you are reading a book written by a professional writer until you start reading, and you just know, this was one of them. Ms. Kubica is at her best…
I highly recommend, I loved all the characters, Sadie, Mouse and Camille. I did not see the ending coming, great book, high five!!!!
I was given an advance copy from Harlequin/Park Row through Net Galley for my honest review, this one gets the highest 5 stars!!!
Sadie and Will Foust are looking for a fresh start when they move from Chicago to a small island in Maine to a home they inherit from Will’s sister. Sadie is eager to put the problems they faced in Chicago behind, but then their neighbor Morgan Baines is found dead in her home. This isn’t the only strange thing Sadie is dealing with and now she wonders if the move was the best thing for their family after all. Sadie wants to learn the truth about what happened to Morgan, but finding the answers may cause more problems for her and her family than having unanswered questions.
I enjoy Mary Kubica’s thrillers, but this isn’t my favorite of her books. With the exception of Sadie and Will’s seven-year-old son, Tate, it’s hard to find a consistently likable character in the whole book. Many characters aren’t what they seem, for better or worse, but there was nobody I could relate to. In spite of that, the book starts out strong. I was intrigued by the stories being told from the point of view of three different characters and how they were connected. The clues were there so it wasn’t long before I was able to guess the first big twist in the story. There were still some things that didn’t add up. The second major twist is a shock and explains most of the things that didn’t previously make sense. This plot turn exposes just how despicable one of the characters really is. There are also descriptions of child abuse in parts of the book that are hard to read. The ending is very dramatic and ends on a more hopeful note than I would have thought possible after some of the reveals were made. The book has some surprises, but I expected so much more from this author. I would rate the book 3.5 stars.
I received this book from NetGalley through the courtesy of Park Row. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
Sadie, a physician, and her husband, Will, have left Chicago with their two sons and moved to a small island town in Maine. They have inherited a house from Will’s sister, after her unexpected death, and they also have the added responsibility of guardianship for Will’s 16 year- old-niece, Imogene. From the beginning, Sadie is uncomfortable on the island, where she works in the town’s only medical office. It feels confining, their new home is dark and ominous, and Imogene is hostile. When a neighbor is found murdered in her home, Sadie’s fears and worries increase as she is drawn into the investigations and she begins to wonder who among them is a murderer.
The Other Mrs. is a suspenseful and tense family drama that begins to cycle out of control as Sadie’s fears increase. The characters are well-drawn and the atmosphere is dark and forbidding. Late in the story there are several twists and revelations that are difficult to anticipate. The author does a good job tying up loose ends and bringing the story to a satisfactory, although somewhat unsettling, conclusion.
For me, this book was 3.5 stars but I’ll round it up to 4.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
I am a fan of Kubica but this book was a bit far fetched for me. Too many sub plots.. too many unexplained details... too many neatly tied knots in the ending. I found myself rushing to the conclusion wishing it over. That’s never a good sign for me. A mystery is one of my favorite genres but this one was a hardly credible premise and resolution. I doubt very much a doctor would not know what medications had been prescribed and would be taking whatever was offered. Sorry I can not recommend this one.
