This wonderfully wicked psychological thriller lures you in from the very first page. Innocent beginning, a death in the family that brings Will, Sadie and their two boys to a small town to care for Imogen after her mother commits suicide. Another murder takes place after their arrival. The characters are enveloped in doubt, suspicion, and fear. Nothing is as it seems, you will be guessing till the very end. A fantastic read that also bring awareness to a very serious subject.
I seriously thought I had this book figured out early in the story and was really disappointed that it was so obvious. I kept plugging away at it since it was an ARC and I felt obligated to finish for an honest review. So, so glad I did! While yes, some things are pretty obvious, Ms Kubica had lots of other curve balls up her sleeve.
Our narrator(s) is very unreliable, which is always fun... wondering who, if anyone, is being honest. The POV switches between three female characters that you know are connected and you're pretty sure early on how they are connected. But there is just so much involved in getting to that point. Very exciting read.
I have two words that sum up The Other Mrs.: Deliciously creepy.
I couldn't put this novel down because I just had to know what would happen. I was trying to guess at various aspects of the story and ended up being completely floored by what actually happened. I didn't see that coming at all. I was so nervous for both Sadie and Mouse throughout the story. This is Mary Kubica's most intense novel to date and is on par with Don't You Cry for my favorite of everything she has written. It was very clever and well thought out. I already can't wait for her next novel!
I am curious as to how it will be made into a movie, as Netflix already has the rights to it. (I'm wondering the same about Sometimes I Lie being made into a TV series.) Here are some casting suggestions, in case they need them:
Sadie: Michelle Monaghan
Will: Daniel Gillies
Imogen: Ella Bleu Travolta
Fake Mom: Jodi Lyn O'Keefe
I am a huge fan of Mary Kubica and this book made me love her even more. I could not put this book down once I started and every guess I had throughout this thriller were wrong! Even once I knew the twist, there were more to come!I can’t say much more without giving anything away but if you like thrillers, you’ll love this one.
This book was just ok for me. I was hoping for much more, but it didn’t get there. I found it to be quite predictable and I had figured out the twists before even reading 25% of the book. I was pretty wrapped up in it until then, but once I got to that point where it started feeling so predictable so early on, I gave up a little bit. It also read a tad clunky at times.
Sadie and Will move from Chicago to an island off the coast of Maine after taking guardianship of Will’s teenage niece Imogen upon her mother’s suicide. This coincides with other events in their lives such as their teenage son Otto getting in serious trouble at school for bringing a knife, an incident at Sadie’s work (she is a Dr. and you will be reminded of that very, very often) and Will’s affair. Shortly after their move, a neighbor is murdered and Sadie is considered a suspect and is determined to find the killer. It seemed to be quite disjointed and unbelievable - left me dizzy at times. Still entertaining enough for an all day flying day. Had I not been stuck on a plane though, I am not 100% sure I would have stuck with it.
The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica is a mystery thriller that follows Sadie and Will Foust as they move their family to a small town in Maine. One day, news breaks of a murder that has the entire town on edge. With each turn of the page, new details are brought to light that cause Sadie to look suspect, yet she remains adamant that she had nothing to do with the murder.
Overall, I really struggled with this read. I found the writing style to be off, almost like I was reading fragments of a summary stuck together, instead of reading a cohesive story. I really disliked the way the author wrote quotations within the story. This being said, I was completely thrown off by the ending which is a great thing! I had easily predicted what was going on with Sadie and her relationships with Camille and Mouse, but I was utterly blindsided by everything else. Although I felt the beginning was slow, the ending packed a punch and helped bring together the entire story.
If mystery thrillers are your thing, then you may like this one. If mystery thrillers are a foreign genre, then perhaps you want to start with a different book.
I loved Mary Kubica's books like 'Pretty Baby' but her last couple of books have been misses for me.
I was eager to read 'The Other Mrs.' hoping this would be a cracker of a book. But unfortunately it didn't completely work for me.
It was good but not great.
I love a creepy old house setting. It has all the trappings of a great atmospheric story and to be honest I was engrossed in the first third of the novel with the suspense and intriguing characters. I wanted to know how it would pan out but then the direction in which the story went did not work for me at all. The characters became more and more unlikeable for no reason as such. I guessed how it would end and it did not surprise me when that's exactly what happened.
I was looking for a more thrilling/intriguing read than what it turned out. You may want to give it a try, others have loved it so I am in the minority here.
Although this was not my favorite of the author's books, and the last couple of books have not worked for me I will be looking out for her in the future because she is a talented writer, for sure.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sending me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My favorite Kubica book since her debut, The Other Mrs. is a fast-paced and twisty thriller that is extremely well written. Highly recommend.
Sadie, her husband Will, and their two boys move to Maine and inherit a an old ,creepy house from his sister, who committed suicide there. They take custody of his troubled teenage niece Imogen, who is struggling to cope after her mom’s loss. Instead of a fresh start though their lives are turned upside down when, their neighbor, Morgan Blaine, is found brutally murdered and Sadie becomes the main suspect.Soon it becomes clear that someone close to Sadie may be responsible for murder and with no lack of suspects she does not know who she can trust .
The Other Mrs.is a dark creepy thriller by Mary Kubica .Told through three POV’s it's a slow burner. The pace does quickens later half of the book and even though it requires you suspend your sense of disbelief, it makes for an entertaining read
I would like to thank Harlequin & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
I had very high hopes for this novel because I have read other works by Mary Kubica and I loved them all. And lets just say that this book did not disappoint. I found the characters in this book easy to relate to and I was pulled into their lives and just dying to find out what was going on. The book has our main characters Will and Sadie having to move to a new house in a very small town after becoming the legal guardian of Will's niece after the untimely passing of his sister. Not long after the family moves into their new house the woman across the street is killed. The book has many different points of view as each character tries to figure out what is going on. I loved the story just like other works by Mary Kubica this one will have you on the edge of your seat dying to figure out what is going to happen. Another great read by a fantastic author that continues to grab my interests and one that will always stand out from the rest. All of the twists and turns that this book took really had me guessing and kept me on my toes. I found all of the characters to be amazing and even the ones that I didn't like to much I loved the way that they were written. Great read I'm very glad I got the chance to check out this book.

Sadie and Will Foust are left with the responsibility of caring for Will’s niece when his sister passes away. Having a lot of bad memories they’d like to leave behind in Chicago, they make the decision to move to Maine into his sisters old home. Shortly after they arrive, one of their neighbours, Morgan Baines is murdered in her home. Concerned with her family’s safety, Sadie finds herself wrapped up in Morgan’s case.

The Other Mrs is a twisty-turny psychological thriller. I love Kubicas ability to give each character a unique perspective, you could easily tell who’s POV you were reading from even if you didn’t catch the header. I did find this one a little slow at times, but I think it’s because I assumed I had everything figured out really early on. Well you know what they say when you assume... Although I did figure out certain aspects, there were still lots of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming! The ending of this book is phenomenal and had everything I want from a psychological thriller!

If you are a fan of The Girl On The Train or The Woman In The Window, I highly recommend you pick this one up!
Twisty dark murder tale in an atmospheric town. Newcomers to a small town are plunged into a nightmare when their neighbor is murdered. A brilliant thriller.
3.25 stars rounded down to 3.*
I started and finished this book on the flight from SFO-HK and was fully gripped in the psychological mystery. However, were I not on a plane I have to wonder if I would have been as engrossed.
I have read three previous works by Ms. Kubica-and this one was not as gripping. I enjoy her writing style and will continue to look for work by her, but this one did not surprise me at all. In fact, I predicted each of the "twists".
Definitely worth the time invested, and I would recommend to fans of Kubica and the genre in general.
*with thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for this honest review.
This book was incredibly difficult to get through. If it wasn’t short sentence after shorter sentence like a bunch of run on thoughts put together, it was too many needless descriptions and excessive descriptions that added nothing to the story. It felt like a student trying to meet a word count on a school assignment by just throwing in a bunch of words to make the book longer. The ‘atmospheric’ descriptions really weren’t working for me either.
This read didn't go down the road you thought it was...had to reread a few pages to figure out what changed but I didn't see it at first. I did enjoy the twists...will look for more by this author.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mary Kubica has done it again & given us a super thriller w/so many twists it will make you're head spin but in a totally good way. I read this book in one day because I could not put it down!!!!!!! At first I wasn't sure about our main character Sadie. Thought she was a unlikable character who was unreliable and wasn't that great of a mom. Then I read on and understand it wasn't her fault at all.
Sadie is a Dr, a mom, & a wife who moves to an island because her husband inherited a house & a niece. A few mths after their move a neighbor is murdered and that's when very strange things start happening in Sadie's life. Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin for my honest review.
Mary Kubica does is again - those plot twists. How does she come up with this stuff?!
With that being said, this book took me for a ride. Everything I thought it was, wasn't.
You think you have something figured out, and you may be onto it, but then you get to the ending and start questioning everything you thought it was.
I really enjoyed this book, it kept you guessing as to the true nature of what is actually happening. The characters were well developed and the plot was well thought out. It moved at a great pace and kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this book as a must read. It was well done on all aspects
Wow! I was not prepared for all the twists and turns in this thriller. It was an almost exhausting read but I loved it!
This is a solid suspenseful read, on par with the author’s other work. I think the only downside is that you can guess the ending about half way through, so it was a bit disappointing from that regard. However, the writing was consistent and by no means was this a bad book. If you enjoy horror/suspense/mystery/thriller this is a great read.
