We will buy this for our library because we have all Ms. Kubica's other books, but it is not as good as her others have been. I know people will check it out though. It was just very predictable. I knew the twist in the story in the first couple of pages.
Just finished my first book of 2020! What an amazing start!! I recieved this ARC from @netgalley and @parkrow in exchange for an honest review. I don't even know where to begin I love @marykubica and have read most of her books and this is definitely my favorite. From the beginning I was intrigued by Sadie's story! It has moving parts I kept trying to piece together but then the unexpected happens and just when I thought I had it figured out BOOM another layer added in!! Loved the detail in her story, the twists I didnt see coming and the way she tied everything together!! I highly recommend this ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ book! Publishing day Feb 18!! Thanks again #netgalley for this ARC

This was another thriller that grips you from the beginning and takes all the twists and turns that it possibly can. Did all the twists work? No, not for me. However, it was still an entertaining read. Without giving anything away, I just wasn't a big fan of the ending--it felt kind of "icky" to me. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy.
I couldn't get enough of this book. I thought I had things figured out a few times but then an unexpected plot twist. I wasn't thrilled with the answer to the mystery but overall the ending wasn't bad. Worth a second read to see if I may have been able to figure it out on my own.
I really enjoyed this unique thriller. There was a huge plot twist that I didn't see coming and the ending was fantastic. I read this one through in two sittings--it was really hard to put down. Recommend for fans of the genre--a solid addition to the unreliable narrator domestic thriller genre.
I’m not going to spoil this book for you, but I didn’t like it. This is the first time I’ve made it through a Mary Kubica novel and now I know why.
The Other Mrs is about a doctor named Sadie whose life in Chicago falls apart (husband is having an affair, her child is having trouble in school, she has to resign from the hospital) and she goes to Maine for a fresh start. Her husband, Will, sees this as a fresh start even though it comes from unfortunate circumstances. His sister so riddled with pain from fibromyalgia kills herself and leaves them in charge of her estate and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Imogen.
I wrote down a number of issues I had with this book, but I can’t share many of them because of massive spoilers, and I don’t want to ruin it for you if you decide to pick it up.
In the last half of the book, Kubica brings in something she hasn’t mentioned previously as part of Sadie’s routine. At first glance, it seems very off, like she forgot to mention for the first 200 pages. But that is done deliberately to throw the reader off. I didn’t like that. The author’s job is not to trick you but surprise you. There is a difference.
One of the main reasons I didn’t like this book was because of the persistent paranoia trope that just seems to be invading literature. Sadie is a FREAKING DOCTOR and everyone around her seems to be second-guessing her. She even moves to Maine with her cheating husband because of the kids. Does that make sense? She blames herself multiple times in the book for “driving her husband into the arms of another woman”.
How many times do I have to keep reading about paranoid weak women?
I find it extremely frustrating and distasteful to keep painting women into these stereotypical boxes.
As far as character development, it’s practically nonexistent. The pacing is all over the place and when we are finally confronted with our villain there is nothing that would have set the reader up for an “aha” moment. It goes from ok…to wait.. what? quickly.
I will admit that the ending is interesting and I haven’t read anything like it, but that doesn’t mean that it’s good.
Mary Kubica never fails as a quality writer. This book was set in Maine and I found the location to be part of my interest in this book. Picturing a small, quaint island town with very few people and where people all know each other's business adds to the mystery and suspense. It brings a certain vibe to the character's personalities.
There are many suspects throughout the book making it difficult to figure out. Mary Kubica is a master at this. I finished the book satisfied and I liked how the story was buttoned up without a lot of questions or need for more clarity.
One of the main characters is Sadie who is a doctor and having a strong female lead is fun. Her husband's character is frustrating because he is hard to figure out. Is he a nice guy or a bad guy. Is he strong or a wimp? I like the contrast in their personalities. The other characters are built up just fine and are interesting as well.
Definitely a must read! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you so much to NetGalley of the ARC. I am appreciative that I can do a review for this book!
This book had me guessing until the very end! Everytime I thought I had it figured out I was surprised again! The characters are jump off the page by the end you don't trust anyone!
Mary Kubica does not fail to impress ever. This book is exceptional. So many twists and turns! The set up is creepy and i felt a tingling down my spine more than once. It covers some great subjects around crazy dysfunctional families and the psychology of the people involved.
Sadie's character is well fleshed out and very interesting as are the other characters. The plot is not simple and straightforward, Its a complex and reading it is like peeling the layers on an onion. the book keeps you engaged and wanting to turn page after page. Add it to your reading list and maybe even your book club since there is a lot to talk about with this one!
Oooh, that was a suspenseful read....so many twists and turns to keep you up late at night to finish the book! This is a story of mental illness, family dysfunction, a creepy old house all on an island cut off from the mainland by a winter storm.
.
Welcome to Creepytown! Sadie and Will Foust inherit an old house on a remote island off the coast of Maine – the place where the husband’s sister committed suicide. So you know this is not going to be a smart move. The family is in need of a fresh start – the couple has marital issues, the wife (a doctor) was forced to leave her job at the hospital and their older son did something really bad at his school. In addition to the new house, the couple become guardians to their orphaned niece who is rebellious and troubled. Camille, a former friend of Sadie / ex lover of Will is on the prowl. Elsewhere, a young child is abused by an evil stepmother. Anything else to add to this already crowded nightmare? Oh yes, the Foust’s new neighbor is murdered.
In typical Kubica style, we are taken on a thrilling ride with lots of twists and turns. Buckle up.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Harlequin and Ms. Kubica for an advance copy.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing house for providing a review copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am a HUGE Mary Kubica fan and could not wait to get my hands on her next thriller, The Other Mrs.
Since I am such a big fan, I am delighted to tell you that this (in my opinion) is her best book yet.
I try to keep my thriller reviews vague, so I don’t take away from these smart plot twists, but I will share the basic premise.
Sadie & Will Foust move from Chicago to a small-town in Maine. They have barely moved in though when their neighbor, Morgan Baines, is found dead.
Who else could have done it except the new family in town?
This murder case is all that anyone can talk about. Sadie, in particular, becomes obsessed with what has happened.
She is intent on uncovering what happened to Morgan, even if it puts her own safety at risk.
Lucky for you, she takes on you every twisted turn.
As a seasoned thriller writer, it takes a lot to surprise me, but this one delivered some REALLY incredible twists that will have you flipping pages until the wee hours of the morning.
This thriller was so good, in fact, that I thought it would be perfect for discussing in our book club. The plot is a bit more layered than I can fully disclose.
I am so excited that Mary will be joining us for an author chat this year and can’t wait to hear how she came up with these smart twists.
I always enjoy Mary's books and this was no exception. This was full of twists that even I did not figure out- and I love it when that happens! The story is told in multiple POVs about a murder on a small island. As the reader, I found myself completely invested. The main narrator is Sadie. She has recently moved with her family to a small island off the coast of Maine that can only be accessed by ferry. She and her husband bring their two sons to live in a dead aunt's. house and have also gained custody of the teenaged Imogen. Things move quickly after this as family members each start to reveal skeletons from their closets. This book touches on some heavy stuff like: mental health awareness, and suicide- so just be aware if that is triggering. I don't want to reveal much more- but this is definitely a fast read and will keep you guessing. This may be my favorite of hers now.
Mary Kubica knows how to write a thriller and this book definitely proves it! Sadie and her family move from Chicago to a rural town in Maine, so the book begins with an atmosphere of darkness and mystery. Having lived in rural Maine myself for four years, I know the isolation that Sadie was feeling and was immediately drawn to and sympathized with her character. Sadie and Will have a dysfunctional family, with two young sons who have their own issues. Otto, the older son, is a hot mess, with some kind of bipolar disorder and who is constantly bullied at school. The fresh start that this move was supposed to give the family just didn’t work for them too great, especially since a neighbor, Morgan Barnes, was found dead in her home shortly after their arrival. Police Officer Berg, an officer who seems overwhelmed by having to investigate a murder in this small town, suspects Sadie is the murderer. But all is not as it seems...not by a long shot! That is what Mary Kubica is so good at doing in her craft; she writes a book that has so many twists that it is meant to fool you, leading you down false and real rabbit trails. Kubica is a master at writing books that are so weirdly twisted that they actually work for the readers! The underlying themes of mental illness and secrecy in a small town and a family make the book a compelling read for fans of psychological and domestic thrillers.
Oof what a book of twists and turns! Ultimately, I really enjoyed it, but did have some mixed feelings just due to some things that didn't feel totally believable (I definitely don't want to spoil anything though!). However, I'll put some of the believability aside for the entertainment of the story.
There's a lot going on in The Other Mrs. First we get Sadie, her husband Will, and their two sons moving to a remote island in Maine. Will's sister has committed suicide and Sadie and Will move into her house with her troubled teenage daughter. But there's another reason they moved, too... We just don't really know what it is. We know that Sadie got in some sort of trouble at work (she's a doctor) and their son, Otto, had some sort of issues at school. Now, in their new neighborhood in Maine, the woman next door is murdered and nobody knows who could have done it. In between scenes from Sadie's new life, we get flashbacks from Camille, Sadie's friend who is obsessed with Will, and Mouse, a child who is seriously abused by her father's new wife.
It's almost like there was so much going on in the book that I didn't even bother trying to figure out what was actually happening. I had a few quick guesses, but ended up being pretty surprised by the ending. At first I was totally annoyed by it, but with some more twists thrown in, I felt OK with it. Again, I didn't feel like everything was totally realistic, but that's OK. I did enjoy reading the book and feel like it will be another hit for Mary Kubica!
I’ve only read one other Mary Kubica book but this being my second means I’m definitely a fan. She spins such a wonderful tale of suspense and just when you think you know where it’s going it takes another turn. I can’t wait to read her others as well!
Sadie and Will Foust move from Chicago to an island off the coast of Maine to raise their recently orphaned niece Imogene. Sadie is a Dr. at the island health clinic and Will is a part time Professor, stay at home dad to their two sons. Sadie is nervous in the dark, old home they inherited and when their neighbor is murdered she finds herself even more uncomfortable about the choices they made to move. I had never read anything by this author until now and all I can say is you have to read this book! It is a roller coaster ride, with twists, turns and unexpected revelations. I really thought I had figured out the ending but I never saw it coming. Thank you so much NetGalley for the ARC of this fantastic book! Run, don't walk to pick this one up!
4.5 stars
Will and Sadie have moved out to an isolated island community in Maine after Will’s sister died and left her house, and the care of her 16-year old daughter, to them. They are hoping this will be a fresh start for their family after they’ve come across a few bumps. Unfortunately, not long after they move in, a woman across the street is murdered.
This was really good. It kept me wanting to keep reading, wanting to know what would happen. The story is (mostly) told from three different viewpoints, Sadie being the main one. I didn’t think Sadie was particularly likeable. There were (of course) twists at the end. I had figured out one small portion of what would happen at the end, but I had other theories that were wrong and there was far more than what I’d guessed.
Another great read from Mary Kubica!
Flipping from the points of view of Saddie, Camille, and Mouse we come to put the pieces together of a small town murder mystery. As the details unfold, Sadie struggles to come to grips with the truth before it is too late.
I really enjoyed figuring out the pieces of this story. Great read!
* I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
This was my first Mary Kubica. While I did enjoy the pacing and the writing, this storyline was not for me. I feel like I've read this story many times before. So while I did not enjoy this one too much, I did enjoy the writing style and will pick up from this author in the future.
