From Amanda: This book contained so many levels. I imagined a straight forward whodunit thriller, but instead got layers of psychological confusion with the growth of a family dynamic and loss of loved ones all mixed into one. And at the heart of the novel is an important topic: mental health. The novel is written through alternating view points, making the plot not entirely straightforward, creating necessary build up to the twists in the end.

Twists and turns this book was a fantastic mystery read! The shift in POV and the changes in timeline really made this a mystery that kept me interested as I read. Kubica does a great job making the reader question what is happening and the how the story is going to evolve. If you are looking for a good and twisty mystery than this one is for you! Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Different take on mental illness. Plot is well formed and found that the main characters were interesting Definitely one to read
For one family, a series of events (both tragic and nearly so) lead them to a new life in Maine. But can they escape the secrets they've tried to bury? That's the overall premise of this story that had my mind searching for answers throughout.
The story itself is told from three POVs.
Sadie Foust
This is main narrator of the story, who details the family's transition to their new-to-them home. They left Chicago for a variety of reasons, which we later learn about, but the main one being that her husband, Will, has gained guardianship of his sister's home and is now the primary caregiver for her daughter, Imogen. Things seem far from ideal from her perspective.
- The house is old and cold.
- She doesn't really like her new job, working in a family doctor's office.
- Imogen hates her.
- And she still doesn't trust her husband following the discovery of his affair.
Camille
From this woman's perspective, we learn of how she first met Will and how she slipped through her hands. But this woman is determined and doesn't give up on going after what she feels is hers.
It is clear earlier on that this woman is far from stable. Stalker, yes. Killer, maybe. And it is that second part that will have your mind racing. How far will this woman go? I had my suspicions about this woman and a possible twist, which were later confirmed.
Mouse
This perspective of a young girl and her Dad gave the story a sweeter note. That is until the Fake Mom shows up. Sadly, Mouse learns that this woman has two sides, the sweet loving wife to her Dad, and the monster who mentally abuses this poor child, which has implications down the road. I had many theories on who Mouse was and had it all wrong. But the revelation ties everything together.
What surprised me the most with this story was how I was so focused on one twist, that I didn't see a second HUGE twist coming. Totally caught off guard, and as a reader, love these surprises. And it is this second twist that truly changes the direction of the story and how it ends.
This was an enjoyable read, which had me guessing throughout. Whether you are already a fan of this author or this genre, this one is worth checking out.
I didn't read this book all the way through. One of the main plot devices, part of the twist, is something that I figured out very early on as it was used in a favorite book of mine published years ago. Once I realized this and realized that there weren't any characters in this book that I found likable or invested in, after reading through about 100 pages, I gave up and simply went straight to the end of the book to figure out the rest of the mystery. I'm honestly getting quite exhausted with psychological thrillers written with unlikeable main characters. I feel a complete lack of motivation to continue with books that utilize unlikeable characters when I have so many books with equally interesting plots utilizing more interesting and enjoyable characters.
If you’re looking for a twisty, can’t put down thriller, THIS IS FOR YOU! Sadie, her husband and two sons have just inherited her husbands sisters house after she commits suicide. She leaves behind a teenage daughter who they now have to care for as well. They move into this house on an island in Maine and the author describes this island and the house as creepy to begin with so when a neighbor is mysteriously murdered, Sadie immediately feels paranoid and worried for her family’s safety. This book is told from alternate points of view that you may not understand at first, but don’t get put off by that, because when everything is weaved together, the shock of it all will be well worth it! What an ending!! This is a book I’ll be recommending to my friends as a must read!
This thriller has a very gothic and suspenseful atmosphere. The writer’s details brought the old, creepy and unwelcoming house to life. And having it set on a small island, with limited access, made the book even more alluring. I love old houses and the ocean!
Imogen was one of the most interesting characters for me...not exactly likable most of the time...but very unique and intriguing. Who doesn’t love a disresctful, hateful and rude teenager? Great taste in t-shirts 😂.
A little slow to begin with, but the pace picked up and the second half read much faster. Although there are some obvious twists, I was never sure who was reliable...or if anyone was. This definitely made the book worth reading!
Thank you to NetGalley, Park Row and Mary Kubica for this digital ARC, in exchange for my honest review!

This was a pretty twisty-tourny mystery. Basically, a family of four has recently relocated to a rural island community after the death of a family member. They've inherited a house and a troubled teenager. They are trying to leave behind their problems in Chicago, but when a neighbor on the island is murdered, it brings up lots of questions.
I was pretty sure I had the mystery figured out early on, and I was pretty annoyed about it. A good mystery isn't supposed to be solve-able 100 pages in! And while it turned out I was partially right, there was so much more than that. While most books like this would revolve around the murder, it almost felt periphery in this novel, with so much else going on.
This was a fun read that kept me guessing, but I'm not sure it was anything ground-breaking. But Kubica definitely puts together a twisty story.
When I started The Other Mrs., I wasn't prepared to get drawn into the story the way that I had. Mary Kubica hooked me and before long, I found myself stealing any free minute to continue with this twisted, psychological thriller.
Sadie and Will Foust move their family from the hustle and bustle of Chicago to a quiet, small-town in Maine. Sadie begrudgingly moves with Will after his sister commits suicide, leaving him her home and sixteen-year old daughter. The situation is less than ideal to begin with and even less so once news of a murder makes its rounds. We witness Sadie slowly come undone.
The Other Mrs. is definitely a page-turner. Kubica definitely has a way of catching the your attention and refusing to let go until the very last page. This novel is told by a few different narrators and I admit, who they were was quite obvious to me the entire time, I was still surprised by what had yet to be revealed.
I must admit my biggest gripe with The Other Mrs. is how predictable I found much of the novel to be but I HAD to finish the novel. I mean, Kubica laid so many nuggets of suspense and doubt that seeing the plot through was the only option. I feel this may be the case for many others who begin this journey.
Suffice it to say, I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Other Mrs.. Mary Kubica paints a thrilling picture that will haunt readers until the very last page. I recommend this title to lovers of psychological thrillers. The Other Mrs. certainly does not disappoint.
I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. There were a few alternate points of view that had me scratching my head, I couldn't figure out their relevance to the plot. But it all came together in the end! The last quarter of the book was a whirlwind of reveals and I couldn't put the book down. I've read another book that had a similar ending (I don't want to mention the book because you will definitely figure it out then!) but I was still satisfied with the resolution.
Folks moving to Maine from the big city are often unnerved by the quiet and the isolated nature of some communities. Sadie and Will have just moved there and their neighbor has been murdered. The town is weird, their new house is creepy and forget the locals....,
Whatever book is next in your TBR pile—put it back and read The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica instead. Sadie, her husband Will, and their 2 sons have “inherited” a house on an island in Maine after Will’s sister dies. They also have gotten guardianship of his 16 year old niece, Imogen, who is difficult at best. Shortly after moving there one of their neighbors is murdered. What happens next is one wild ride! This is one of the most chilling novels I’ve read. The story is told in multiple viewpoints and points in time. The characters are relatable and the mystery is intriguing. I have read several of Kubica’s novels and The Other Mrs. takes her to a whole new level. I will be thinking about this story for a long time. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Super twisty! I love Mary Kubica and this one did not disappoint. Full of twists and turns, it will keep you guessing and when you think you know what's what it all flips on its head.
Great read! full of twists and turns. will keep you on the edge of your sit. Creepy setting, great location for this book! Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC.
This was my first book by Mary Kubica and it will NOT be my last!! I loved this book so much that I had to read it twice because I was afraid I would miss something. This one will definitely be going in my collection and now I must get the rest of her books!
That was something!
I love the way the author writes! She creates such interesting characters. Not that they’re all that likable mind you.
This story definitely pulled some surprises. I liked that I didn’t see them coming for the most part. Was this something I had seen before? Yes, but with a slight twist. Was it believable? Probably not, but I still was highly entertained by it.
There’s not much that can be said without giving spoilers so I’ll stop here but I’ll recommend going into it blind as possible. Look forward to the next by this author!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Harlequin - Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) for a copy in exchange for a review.
Wow, what a ride! Every time I thought I had the book figured out—whiplash! I didn’t intend to read this book in one sitting but I just couldn’t put it down. I was constantly guessing and wanting more. I’ve liked a few of the authors previous works, but this blew the others out of the water. This book really shows her growth as an author and storyteller. I can’t wait to see what she does next. 5 stars
Thank you Netgalley for an early copy of Mary Kubica's "The Other Mrs."
Dr Sadie Foust and her husband Will have just uprooted their family to a small island town on the coast of Maine to take guardianship of his niece after his sister's suicide. The house is old and creepy and Imogene has made it clear that she resents the family moving in and hates them. Sadie is having trouble adjusting to the new surroundings and circumstances but when a neighbor is murdered it hits to close to home, her home to be exact. When things start to unravel she begins to suspect that the killer may be living in her house but who could have done it?
I have been a fan of Mary Kubica for a few years now and like her other novels this one is full of twists and turns with unexpected plots and characters. The characters are interesting and well developed, while the setting offers a creepy isolated backdrop for a disturbing story. I enjoyed this novel a lot and would recommend it to suspense fans.
*Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this title.*
Just like other Kubica books, I found myself instantly hooked into this story. It keeps you intrigued and offers a twist to the typical plot twist. If I'm being honest, I didn't love the lack of digging into the "Mouse" perspective at the end. I understood who they were, but I didn't get anything in depth. Also, I wanted to know more about the character Imogen. While I loved the twist, I found myself wondering how realistic the "bad" character was; they were so cruel that I wondered how someone could keep that hidden for so long from smart characters. Still, the story was good ad the twist was great!
I was able to read this book thanks to NetGalley. Wow. What a whirlwind this book took me on. So many twists and turns I honestly had no idea what was going on until the end.
Sadie and Will relocate to Maine from Chicago with their two sons after Will’s sister commits suicide and gives custody of her teenage daughter, Imogen, to Will. The house is large, dark, and creepy and Imogen is likewise a sullen, angry teenager. Almost immediately after arrival a neighbor is murdered and chaos ensues.
Written from many points of view (including Sadie’s former roommate who met Will before Sadie) it is extremely fast paced. I give this one five stars and will highly recommend to my book clubs and friends. Thanks again to NetGalley!
