Reading The Other Mrs., by Mary Kubica is, seriously, like taking a master class in writing the perfect domestic murder mystery. She is, indeed, a master. Her characters, plots and narrative shifts, are nothing short of brilliant. I ate this book up in one setting - I absolutely could not put it down. Fill in all the appropriate mystery superlatives here - twisty, roller coaster, heart racing - you know what I'm talking about, right? This is it, in spades. I will gleefully read everything she writes.
Thank you NetGalley, Mary Kubica, and the publisher for the amazing opportunity to read this arc wayyyyyy before it is released, in exchange for my honest opinion. I'm truly grateful.
Great and intense read! If you like a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this is the one for you! I made predictions as I read...and none of them turned out to be correct!!!
This book was soooo good. I couldn't put it down. The character development was amazing and I couldn't wait to put it all together. I had ideas of what I thought was going on and boy was I wrong. I didn't finally figure it out until almost at the end. I have a total book hangover after reading this one. Thanks to Netgalley for the review copy.
Tried to include link for Goodreads and it isn't accepting the link that it says to copy and paste. I'm sorry
This is BY FAR my favorite book by this author so far! While it was somewhat predictable, that didn't bother me. It kept my attention and I didn't want to put it down!
Will and Sadie Foust are hoping for a fresh start in a small town on Maine's coast, completely cut off from the mainland. Will's sister recently passed away, leaving him a house and custody of a 16 year old niece.
In Chicago, things had begun to unravel for the Fousts. An affair, their teenaged son bringing a knife to school, and a mental breakdown at the ER Sadie was a physician, drive the decision to start over.
Once the family arrives, a murder of a neighbor leaves Sadie shaken. Who could have done it? Is it someone on her street? Someone in her house? She is determined to find out.
I love Mary Kucia, and I loved this twisty psychological drama. It really is one surprise after another. Highly recommended!
I love twisty domestic thrillers with unrealiable narrators, so this one checked all the boxes for me! I figured out a a major part of the plot early on, but then the author laid a twist I did not see coming on top of that. So what could have been a predictable cliched plot device turned out pretty good instead.
A dead body, a remote island, a spooky house, and plenty of questionable characters...what's not to love here? Suspicions swirl off the page, and the truth is revealed in twisty increments that will have you constantly rethinking who is the killer. Kubica cranks it up a notch with this one, a psychological thriller that will mess with your mind.
4.5 stars.
From start to finish this thriller kept me on my toes. I had theories galore and they all were incorrect. I would highly recommend this if you like thrillers and are tired of reading the same predictable plots. I questioned not only the characters sanity and truthfulness but also my own. One of the best thrillers I have read to date.
This is a story of a somewhat normal family. After all what is totally normal.
The mother is hardworking, a doctor. The father, Will, teaches a class part time and is a stay at home dad. There are two children, Otto, 14 and Tate, 7 years old. The family has mad a big move, living now on one of the islands of Maine.
They moved there after the death of Will's sister, Alice. She has bequeathed the house to them and also the guardianship of her 16 year old daughter Imogen.
Imogen was the one who found her mother, hanging from the attic rafters. She is not happy having her home invaded by strangers. She has a volatile relationship with Sadie.
Everything may have worked out for this family, except people around them start dying. The police are sure Sadie must be behind the murder of a neighbor. However, Sadie doesn't ever remember meeting the neighbor. There is another neighbor that says he saw the twin arguing in the street.
This is a story of cruel manipulation by a supposed loved one against someone with mental illness. The illness is DID or dissociative identity disorder.
Well written. Surprising storyline, strong characters. Important information about DID.
Mary Kubica always write FANTASTIC thrillers!! I just finished The Other Mrs. and I’ve had my socks knocked off!! I went into the novel completely blind because Mary Kubica is such a master storyteller that I never want any sort of spoiler! I will say that it took me a minute to get into this novel, but once I did...wowzer!!! The storyline was well crafted with absolutely perfect timing. In true Mary Kubica fashion, the twist and turns were plentiful and unexpected—love that! The Other Mrs. is a 5 star read that will most definitely satisfy any domestic thriller fan! I am busting at the seams for everyone to read this book so I can discuss it lol!!! I am already looking forward to reading Mary’s next novel!
OH MY GOSH!! This book was so good! @marykubica has a way of sucking a reader in and keeping the pages turning! The ending totally caught me off guard in the best way!! Absolutely bloody fantastic!!! Please rush out to get this in February 2020! Huge shout out to @netgalley and @parkrowbooks (and @harlequinbooks ) for this suspenseful #arc!!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Park Row for the advanced copy of this book! Mary Kubica has become my new favorite author since her debut book. I have read everything she’s written as soon as it comes out, so when I saw this I was excited to get to read it for an honest review! I LOVED it!! The storyline was great and the twists and turns had my jaw drop a few times! Definitely a worthy read that will be hard to put down! Thank you again!!
This was such a great psychological thriller and I literally couldn’t put it down. I read this book in two nights because I couldn’t go long without knowing what was going to happen. Sadie Froust moves with her husband and two sons to tiny town in Maine because her husband’s sister had past away. They decide to let their niece live with them in the house she grew up in to help her niece cope with the loss of her mom. Their niece is Imogen has a dark presence about her so when a neighbor next door is murdered, Sadie can’t help but think about Imogen. This book is filled with so many secrets that intertwine the deeper you get into the story. And the ending is a shocker! I did NOT see it coming which made me love this book.
WOW! This book was full of twists and you never knew who to trust. Told from multiple perspectives about a murder on a small island, the reader is pulled into the drama and fear of it all. The main narrator, Sadie, has just recently relocated with her family to a small island off the coast of Maine, only reachable by ferry. She and her husband, Will, bring their two sons to live in Will’s late sister’s home and have been given custody of the teen daughter, Imogen. While not the happiest scenario, the family came hoping for a fresh start. Things quickly devolve as the family members each start to divulge their various secrets and sins to the reader. The book deals with a lot of tough topics like mental health, suicide, abuse, and murder, but it’s a thrilling read! It starts off a little confusing at first as it jumps between narrators, but things speed up and all start to fall into place as the mystery all starts to come together. I especially liked the ending and the author’s note, but I won’t ruin it for you.. you just have to read it yourself.
”I am in the business of saving lives, not taking them. But there are exceptions to every rule.”
First off- Mary is one of my favorite go-to authors when I’m in need of a thriller/mystery psychological read.
She knows just how to keep you on your toes without giving too much away. Just barely dangling the carrot right in front of your nose until the perfect moment.
I couldn’t wait to get to that point because I knew in true Kubica fashion she was going to screw with my head and she did! Twice.
You have major doubts about, well all really, of the characters right from the very get go. Something’s off. Eerie. Everyone’s looking at the other like they know something one doesn’t. But who is really to blame?
”Someone is lying. But I don’t know who.”
With an unsolved murder in the neighborhood and the creepy girl down the hall, what’s to be afraid of?
In the end, justice never looked so satisfying.

This book was AMAZING. I could barely put it down. It was such a twisted storyline and I found that I thought I knew what was really going on....but then bam...nope! The character development was spot on, you develop the exact feelings for each character that the author wants you to. You dislike Imogen the niece who comes with the inherited house, you suspect certain culprits for happenings in the novel....but again nope.
When I love a book this much I don’t like to give away any details I just hope that my love and passion for the book makes people want to pick it up.
Thank you to the to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC for an honest review.
Mary Kubica has a way with me. She just does. From her writing to her twists to her intricately woven POV's, I guess by now I am just bias when it comes to her. I love her books. I haven't met one that I did not enjoy. That's a fact! So with me saying that, you can take what you want from my review LOL!
The downside of The Other Mrs. was that I really didn’t connect with Sadie and the character role that she played. And oh how I wish I would have, especially once the ending came around. I wish I could have attached to her more than what I did because I think the book would have had a completely different effect on me. The first part of the book I found her to be boring but yet again (I am bias, remember?) Mary Kubica's writing kept my attention the entire way through. I did enjoy the over-all tone and the POV's of Camille and Mouse and the way they spoke in their chapters though. I found it to be very engaging.
There is a lot going on in this book. A lot. A lot of characters, a lot of things happening on each page that you have to actually slow down, read, and retain. But with the book doing this, it will also make you think you know what’s gonna happen and then something totally unexpected happens. Which is my kind of book! I love the ole bait and switch scenarios. The Other Mrs. was a well crafted and well written mystery thriller with a quick-paced plot and very engaging and complex characters.
AMAZING!!!!!!! I literally cannot day enough amazing things about Mary Kubica. I honestly do not know how she does it. This story was perfection. It kept you guessing the whole way and the ending was everything I wanted it to be!
Having read many psychological thrillers I have become familiar with the patterns most books follow. I was unprepared for the number of twists this novel packs in and the complexity of the many characters. I found the setting and some of the characters a bit exaggerated but it didn't take away from the plot line. I think you'll be happy you read through to the end of this book! Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin for providing an ARC so I could enjoy it sooner than later!
All I can say is wow! Mary Kubica nailed it. The storyline was great, and I did not see the end coming at all. When you can get to almost the end of a book and not have figured out where it was going ahead of time - that’s a great twist! Highly recommend
