I find the human body to be so fascinating. As a medical professional, I had to undergo many years of learning about anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry to earn my degree. I loved learning about the science that makes us human, and I still do! Thus, The Body: A Guide for Occupants, was a real winner with me. Bryson has a way of relating information that makes reading nonfiction feel fun and engaging. I recommend this read for anyone who enjoys learning about science and humans and what makes us, us.
Bryson writes with an obvious sense of delight and joy in following his curiosity through the body. I can imagine science teachers using excerpts in their classes.
As always, Bryson's chummy style and self-deprecating humor make a huge subject bite-sized and accessible, engaging and memorable, all the while imparting knowledge and facts in an instructive (but painless) way. Like the travel writer he is, Bryson takes us on a trip through the human body, and as anyone who has read his other travelogues knows, he's a fabulous armchair travel companion.
A great overview of the human body by the witty Bill Bryson. Medical history/human anatomy books can sometimes be a bit much but Bryson keeps it just in-depth enough to stay interesting to the layperson.
He really does take something completely boring and make it fascinating. I do occupy my body and suffer several afflictions he discusses. I feel I know much more about "it" and enjoyed the learning experience immensely.
Bill Bryson rarely disappoints, and in "The Body", he excels. In his gentle humorous voice, he describes the human body and how the various parts and systems function - or don't function, leading to illness & death. Compulsively readable, this is one of my favorites for 2019 so far! Perfect for would-be doctors or those curious about bodily functions; Bryson's wry personality shines through and makes this a terrific choice for non-fiction readers.
Bill Bryson is always entertaining... and fascinating. The Body is another example. I have to stop and read paragraphs out loud my husband because I just can't keep it to myself.
I love books that examine a complex historical, scientific, or political topic in a grounded accessible way. Bill Bryson’s latest accomplishes this for the human body with his usual wit and flair.
This is an informative and interesting trip through the human body, in all its miraculous complexity!
Bill Bryson can be such a hoot - first he dissects rooms in a house and now a body - yours. By the time you finish the book, you will know more about your body than ever thought was necessary to know. Great facts, easy to read even with some humor. A must for all libraries, personal and public.
Bill Bryson returns to give you an overview of the human body, and what your doctor may or may not know about it. Funny, dry, and chock full of facts that will impress your friends and family, this is one that shouldn't be missed. I plan to listen to it as well, if Bryson narrates the audiobook (which he usually does). Fun way of introducing science to people interested in the facts but don't want to get bogged down with too many scientific terms.
Bill Bryson's usual delightful style of non-fiction writing is definitely apparent in this book. Highly readable, full of fascinating tidbits of information, I have absolutely no problem recommending this to people who enjoy Bill Bryson or non-fiction.
My first book by Bill Bryson was "A Short History of Nearly Everything." Since reading it, I have frequently included a Bryson book or two in my yearly reading and have suggested them to others. The Body is sure to be another book I will regularly recommend (and in fact already have).
The book itself winds through the system's of the body one after another. Bryson discusses what makes up the system, the important discoveries and discovers of parts in the system, always with an eye toward what makes for a good story. Finishing with the systems, he moves on to the functions of the body, illness and causes of disease, and finally death.
Even knowing a good amount about anatomy and scientific history, I found myself learning while reading things book. This was particularly true when he discussed new research and interviews with scientists on the cutting edge of physiology or disease research. However, don't mistake this as a boring textbook. While this does not contain the wit and sarcasm of his travelogues or even Brief History, Bryson has a style of writing that keeps you engaged and reading well past the time when you should have gone to bed.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in anatomy in particular or science as a whole. You are sure to learn something and have fun doing it.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read a pre-release copy this book.
Bill Bryson takes the reader along on the ultimate travelogue — ourselves. With his usual knack for great prose, he makes even the most clinical terminology readable. Bryson’s humor flows through the book at a much deeper level than the epidermis, all the while offering up stunning facts about our miraculous chemistry. I took short breaks between chapters to contemplate the fact-filled details of what I’d just read. Lots to digest here.
For everyone, this is a must have book, not only as a reference but also for understanding just how amazing our body works. The author does it in an understandable way and amuses us along this journey with fascinating and amusing anecdotes. Can't wait to buy it.
Bill Bryson is such an incredibly gifted writer. Who knew a book about the body could be such an interesting read?? It's formatted in an easily digestible manner, so anyone can enjoy it! Highly recommended to those who love to learn about the body and fans of Bill Bryson.
The Body by Bill Bryson is a fascinating look at the human body and how it functions. Bryson is one of my favorite authors, and he does not disappoint with this book. Each historical tidbit that he shares is well-researched and he thoroughly cites all sources. The book is written for the layman; no prior medical knowledge is necessary to enjoy the book. The book covers each area of the body from the outside in and explains how it all works. Interesting stories of historical discoveries about the body are interwoven through each chapter, such as how diseases were first discovered and how early scientists examined and learned the existence of each cell, nerve, and organ. I have no medical knowledge, but always found anatomy and biology fascinating when I took the classes in school. This book satiated my thirst for knowledge in a readable and enjoyable way. I highly recommend this book! Thank you to NetGalley for the arc of this book.
Bill Bryson’s narrative is engaging and informative as he tells the story of human life as only he can with directness and wit and a wealth of information..
WOW, I am amazed at how much I did NOT know about the human body! Mr Bryson made this interesting, informative and fun.
My thanks to Netgalley and Doubleday Books for this advanced readers copy. This book is due to release in October 2019.
Very good descriptions of how each of the systems of our bodies work. I learned a lot! However I missed Bryson's usual humor
