This Earl of Mine had two wonderful main characters, Georgie and Benedict. Ms. Bateman did a lovely job in creating their personalities in a way that would not only make them likable to the reader but also complimentary to one another in the storyline.
Truthfully, I initially had some trouble with the pacing of the story and felt as if it was dragging.at times. However, about midway through, it began to flow better and finished well. I also appreciated the fact that the romance between Georgie and Benedict progressed in a slow and realistic manner. They were both strong and honest characters who respected one another. I liked that the author didn't see the need to toss unnecessary drama into the storyline. She allowed them to be mature individuals who reacted reasonably to events as they occurred.
I look forward to reading more by Ms. Bateman in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This story just did not work for me. I loved the premise, thought the characters full of promise...initially. But as the story progressed, I became more confused. There really didn't seem to be a plot, and I couldn't figure out where the story was heading. The romance didn't flow well, felt very forced and contrived. I became bored as I was reading, because I was less invested in the characters as time went on. The villain in this story was very typical, nothing original about it, and it felt like I was reading a book written by a student in a class on writing romance.
Girl marries criminal, thinking he's going to die, and then oh my gosh, he lives! And what's this? He's really a peer in disguise? Shocking! And oh no, her villainous cousin wants her and her money for himself. Egads, what shall we do?! And in walks the peer in disguise who also happens to be a war hero to save the day, because even though he's always been against marriage, maybe it's not so bad after all.
I'm not saying I would never read a book by this author, because I really did feel this had a lot of promise. But at the end of the day, I couldn't get behind the tired stereotypes that were used. I would have loved to have seen the hero and heroine act less predictable. I don't expect much from the villain, but even his character needed more depth to him.
A sterling start to this new series. Georgiana is strong willed and determined to take her future into her hands. Benedict becomes the unexpected husband to her while on a mission undercover. This is is a great story. They both took a risk and end up with forever. On the way there they have lots of fun discovering each other and solving crimes. Georgiana is a great character as she is strong, witty and beautiful. Ben is a gentleman despite his roguish reputation and fulfills her needs by loving her and making her smile. Looking forward to see his friends who made fun of him also fall in love.
This was such a fun book to read. Ms. Bateman did a wonderful job with the characters. One of those stories I will definitely read again.
I adored This Earl of Mine; it was such a fun, breezy read. I loved both MCs, Georgie and Ben; they are both fascinating and well-developed characters. They have a lot of chemistry, and their banter was so entertaing. I liked how the author flipped the conventional historical romance tropes. In this book, the heroine Georgie is the one with all the money. She is a shipping heiress and a successful businesswoman in her own right, who took over the business after her father's death. Ben is an impoverished second son of an Earl. I found this dynamic very refreshing and different from most historical romance novels. This Earl of Mine is a wonderful start to a series of feminist historical romances that I cannot wait to read more of.
Wealthy shipping heiress Georgiana Caversteed is desperate to keep her business and fortune in her own hands and away from her dreadful cousin who will merely squander it. To do so, she concocts a plan to marry a condemned Newgate prisoner and then never see him again, maintaining her independence as a widow. She's shocked by her body's reaction the the rogue's kiss, but even more so by the sight of her new husband at a crowded ball.
War-toughened rogue and penniless brother to an earl, Benedict Wylde never anticipated marriage. He was no true prisoner, but working in Newgate undercover for Bow Street. When it becomes apparent that their marriage won't be easily dissolved, Benedict and Georgie determine that the best way to maintain their secret is for him to publicly court her, culminating in an end-of-season wedding, after which they can both go their separate ways. It's a solid plan, but as they spend more time together, attraction ignites between them and their marriage becomes more real than either expected, if only Georgie can trust that a man like Benedict could truly want her and not her money.
Georgie is so used to people only seeing her money and only wanting her company for that reason that she's become obsessed with her fortune. The number of time she mentions the obscenity of said fortune did get a bit annoying, but it was also understandable given how she was surrounded by fortune hunters and a ridiculous mother. Said mother, as well as Georgie's younger sister and her suitor also provided great humor and there were some slippery villains for our main characters to contend with together. What really kept my interest and made me not want to put this book down was the sizzling chemistry and emotional development between Georgie and Benedict. He wound up being an adorably sweet hero with a little PTSD and some surprising self-confidence issues, but despite being in need of money, he truly didn't want Georgie's fortune. I loved that it wound up being her convincing him of his worth rather than the other way around.
This was an original plot and all that burn-up-the-pages chemistry between Georgie and Ben makes this one a keeper. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes and I'm looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Shipping heiress Georgiana Caversteed is nearing twenty five when she’ll have control of her fortune she’s done with men who covet her purse more than her person especially her cruel cousin Josiah who is determined to force Georgie into marriage. Georgie hatches a madcap scheme to wed a condemned criminal before he’s set to be executed. All she has to do is find an eligible bachelor in prison to marry her, and she’ll be free. Benedict William Henry Wylde, scapegrace second son of the late Earl of Morcott and well-known rake, is in Newgate prison undercover, working for Bow Street. Georgie doesn’t realize who he is when she marries him—and she most certainly never expects to bump into her very-much-alive, and very handsome, husband of convenience at a society gathering weeks later.
The first in a new series & a new take on a marriage of convenience. I was drawn in from the start & enthralled all the way through & read, once again, into the night to finish it. Very well portrayed characters & a very well paced story that never lagged. Whilst I loved Georgie who was intelligent, strong & feisty it as Ben who won my heart, oh my he was so swoon worthy & toe curlingly gorgeous not only his appearance but he was so honourable & truly fell hard for Georgie. The attraction between the pair sizzled but they also found they could talk to each other & came to like each other too. The added mystery &intrigue all added to my enjoyment. I'm so looking forward to Alex & Seb's stories
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This Earl of Mine by Kate Bateman 4 stars
This is the first book in The Bow Streer Bachelors series. The series are about three men, Benedict, Alex, and Sebastian who met while at Eton. Being younger sons than looked for adventure and joined the Rifles during the Napoleonic War. They survived and decided to form a partnership to run a gambling club. - Tricorn Club. But running a club wasn't enough so they also investigate for Bow Street.
We meet Ben while he is undercover in Newgate prison. He is trying to get information from a dying prisoner. Georgiana Caversteed is also at Newgate trying to marry a condemned prisoner. As a legitimate widow she can keep control of her vast fortune she inherited from her father..
However, all plans are subject to fate, so instead of a soon to be dead man, she marries Ben., who is supposed to be transported to Australia.
What ensues is a story filled with action, adventure and a lot of flirting while Ben and Georgie figure out this mess. The interaction between Ben and Georgie was fun to read, especially when they kept company with Georgie sister, Juliet and her beau, Simeon.
This is the first time I've read a book by Ms. Bateman. It was a fast read and I enjoyed it. I look forward to Alex's book next year.

When you are an heiress with more money than all your suitors combined, how do you choose a groom? The answer to that question is to dive into the depths of Newgate prison and buy yourself a husband on the night before he is hanged. A widows life is where it is at! Only there is one small problem… what if there are no condemned criminals available on the night you have decided to take your husband? … What is instead you end up married to one of Londons most notorious rogues? And lastly, what if he’s penniless to boot???
Shipping heiress Georgiana Caversteed has done just that, now she and her scapegrace husband, Benedict Wylde need to come up with a. Plan to save face and each of them get what they want in the. She wants independence and freedom from all the fortune hunters, while Ben just needs some cash to help his debt ridden brother, the Earl of Morcott? Will this unlikely pair survive the rest of the season and find their own happiness?
This was fun read and an interesting way to push the two characters together. I loved their interactions and watching them grow together.
This Earl of Mine by Kate Bateman, the first book in her new Bow Street Bachelors series is scheduled to release October 29th, 2019.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Georgie wants a man to love her for herself not her money. Georgie is strong and capable woman who is afraid of losing control of her fortune to a fortune hunter. Benedict, temporarily in prison to gather information, is forced to not only marry Georgie, but to sign away any claim to her fortune. Georgie is surprised to see her new cleaned up husband at a society event. As they discuss how they can end their 'marriage', they both feel a very strong attraction to the other. Before long, Georgie is helping Benedict on his mission. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Netgallery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. Even though I don't often read books with lots of sizzling scenes and some steamy ones, I enjoyed this book very much. I liked that Benedict was doing various things to earn money to support his brother and the family estate. I loved that Georgie was now the head of a large shipping company. I enjoyed this reversal of typical romance roles. Benedict's friends and Georgie's family are interesting characters as well. This is a fun read and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
This was positively DELIGHTFUL to read! Georgie and Ben's chemistry just flew off the page. I love how Georgie is an independent women making a living for herself and is successful WITHOUT being an idiot. Too often I find the women in romance novels just run headlong into trouble without considering that it is not a weakness to want assistance -whether from man or woman. But Georgie is the perfect balance. She's strong an independent, but she recognizes Ben for how amazing he is and how much they help each other. Their romance was perfectly swoon worthy and I cannot wait for the next in the series!
Thank you NetGally and St. Martin's Press for the eARC!
I picked this book up because this is a new to me author and the blurb sounded unique.

The first book in a new Regency romance series, an heiress and a rogue accidentally end up in a secret marriage of convenience.
In a desperate bid to keep her fortune out of her cousin’s hands, shipping heiress Georgiana Caversteed marries a condemned criminal in Newgate prison. The scoundrel’s first kiss is shockingly heated, but Georgie never expects to see her husband again. Until she spots him across a crowded ballroom. Notorious rogue Benedict Wylde never expected a wife. He was in Newgate undercover, working for Bow Street. To keep their marriage of convenience a secret, Wylde courts Georgie in public, but the more time they spend together, the more their attraction sparks. Could an heiress with the world at her feet find happiness with a penniless rake? Kate Bateman’s This Earl of Mine is a delightful start to the Bow Street Bachelors series, with witty banter, dynamic characters, and swoon-worthy romance.
I don’t believe I’ve ever read a historical romance that starts out with the heroine marrying a prisoner in order to evade an unwanted marriage to a money hungry relation.
This Earl of Mine begins with Georgiana Caversteed entering Newgate to carry through with her plan to marry a convict facing the gallows in order to gain her freedom. Georgie is a strong heroine who is pretty much in charge of her life and the shipping empire left to her by her father. Her main worry is a pesky, money hungry cousin who has aspirations of forcing her into marriage and therefore taking over her fortune. Georgie’s plan would set her free, the only problem is the man she marries isn’t a prisoner at all, but the younger son of the Earl of Morcott and a man who works off the books for Bowstreet.
I liked the premise of this story and enjoyed the characters quite a bit. One of my favorite things is a strong heroine and Georgie is exactly that. I loved the dynamics between Georgie, her mother and sister, and that her father left her the family business. It may not be completely realistic to the time, but I really don’t care. I’m here for it.
Benedict is part owner (with his two bffs) in a gaming hell, works for Bowstreet, and seems to do pretty much anything for money… shooting contests, horse races, etc. After the death of his father and the realization that the estate is in shambles, Ben has done everything he could possibly do to help his older brother get it back on track. I liked that Ben is never angry or rude about finding himself married and to a rich heiress who won’t cede control of her fortune. He’s just like “so what do we do now?”
I liked the chemistry between the main characters and was invested in their romance. I didn’t love the secondary plot where they work together to figure out who is building a submarine to rescue Bonaparte. It was just meh for me and I could have done with less of it and more relationship development.
I do think Ms. Bateman did a good job of setting up the rest of the series and I find myself looking forward to what comes next. This was a good start to the series and I’ve already put the next book in the series, To Catch an Earl, on my TBR list.
I liked this book, there was romance but also adventure and the two main characters were pretty good together. The premise was a little bit too weak but all is good what ends good.!
Mi é piaciuto questo libro che aveva il giusto miscuglio di romanticismo ed avventura, inoltre i due personaggi principali avevano una buona chimica. La premessa era piuttosto deboluccia, ma alla fine tutto é bene quello che finisce bene.
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
Kate Bateman was a new-to-me author prior to reading this book, and I'm so glad I decided to give it a try! I enjoyed the dynamic between Georgie and Benedict, and especially liked the role-reversed marriage of convenience scenario in which she needed to marry in order to keep her inheritance safe (here, from an evil cousin who was attempting to force her into marriage). Benedict's willingness to let Georgie assist in his Bow Street investigation and respect for her business/shipping acumen was also a nice change -- particularly compared to recent books that share some similarities (e..g, the infuriating Whit in Sarah MacLean's Brazen and the Beast). Despite the dramatic circumstances of their first meeting and precipitous marriage, as well as the external drama going on around them, I liked how the two of them learned to trust each other quickly and became partners/friends fairly early on. Sometimes a more subtle romantic development can be just as powerful as an enemies-to-lover type story (which I also love when done properly).
My one quibble with the story is that it seems to peak a little too early with the action and drama, leaving the resolution of the espionage plotline almost an after thought. Since I was more heavily invested in their relationship development than the spy plotline, the ending kind of felt dragged out while they dealt with the remaining threads of the spy drama.
Overall, I highly recommend This Earl of Mine to historical romance fans looking for a unique spin on familiar tropes and/or a satisfying marriage-of-convenience tale.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for providing an ARC for review!
Georgiana just wants to be loved for her, not her money. To avoid issues with her cousin and other suitors she decides to marry a convict who is soon to die. A mix up ensues and she instead marries Benedict Wylde, who is in jail working undercover for Bow Street. Lots of drama and fun throughout the story. Quick read and perfect afternoon reading.

This was a solid read and good start to the series. I have never read anything by this author before, but I will definitely be doing so in the future!
I liked the uniqueness of the plot -- a very rich yet desperate young woman (Georgianna) decides to take matters into her own hands when her smarmy cousin seeks to compromise her into marriage to obtain her wealth. Ew. So she goes to Newgate prison to find herself a man... on death row. She wants to marry a man who is scheduled to be executed immediately so that she will become a widow who controls her own life and funds. Benedict Wilde is the second son of an impoverished earl (his father emptied the coffers through his frivolity, and now his older brother is trying to restore them as well as honor to the name). As such, Benedict has no funds, so he sells his commission to the army and decides to purchase a gaming hell with his close friends to make money. While waiting for the club to be profitable, he takes assignments from Bow Street and is currently undercover as a prisoner at.... Newgate prison. And, you guessed it, he is taken from his cell and told he must wed. Since protesting would mean blowing his cover, he weds Georgianna who believes he will be gone the next day. So when she spots him across a ballroom not too long after, she is (of course) shocked to her core. What now? Can they find love under the most unlikely circumstances? A light, fun read with some witty exchanges between the main characters and some steam.
I didn’t expect to enjoy this book this much but after The Vanished Bride and taking a break from My Sister The Serial Killer, this was a fun read! So glad to get an arc of this book.
We have Georgie who’s super rich, and Ben who’s definitely not. And they end up married. And team up (or rather Georgie joined Ben) to solve cases (?) or spy for the Home Office.
Georgie is such a great character. No simpering or wilting is this woman. Love that Ben appreciated her #from the start. They’re so great together.
Can’t say enough how I was surprised by this book. This is my first time with this author. I think I’ll check out her other works now.
Thank you St Martin’s Press for a copy of this book! I enjoyed it!
This Earl of Mine, I'm gonna let it shine. That's immediately where my mind went as soon as I read the title. And shine this book did. From page one I loved the characters and by the end I was in love right along side them. Ms. Bateman swept us into the characters world and kept us there at the edge of our seat for the length of the novel. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and can't wait to buy it for my shelf as well as see what This author has up her sleeve for us next.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley. Kate Bateman is a new author to me and I am so pleased to have read this beautiful love story. The story is based on a marriage of convenience, but filled with romance and action. The heroine, Georgie is a smart, ambitious businesswoman, and Wylde is a war hero. There were underlying themes such as equality of genders in the story as well. Overall, a great author and a wonderful read.
It’s hard to come across decent historical (regency) romances that aren’t too overwhelmingly cheesy and bland, and I pleasantly surprised by this read and how much I loved it. The author was able to set this apart from other by introducing a wealthy aristocrat finding herself marrying a criminal to stop suitors who are in hot pursuit of marrying her to get to her family wealth. It was different from the traditional and generic historical romances I have read as of late and as might be expected I am highly impressed with the author's ability to immediately enthralled me from page one with the rich historical imagery and emotion that the writing style displayed. In addition to that, let's talk about the lead characters that initially won me over. From the get-go the chemistry between Georgie and Ben’s were off the charts and once introduced, the playful banter and flirty interactions were swoon worthy and showcased how well they mesh well together despite their vastly different cultural backgrounds. Any reader can feel the intense heat and attraction through the pages, and because of that, I just knew this was a keeper. Needless to say, “This Earl of Mine” is a must read for all historical regency readers looking for a decent read to spice up their life.
