Overall, this graphic novel was fantastic. I definitely have no complaints. The characters were well thought out and the relationships in the story were adorable. I really loved the LGBTQ representation. It was done in a way that didn't make it the focus of the story. The author was able to make it just apart of the characters' lives.
The artwork was also amazing.
I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing a copy of this ebook for review.
Firstly, I loved the author's note. Before even beginning the story, it was lovely to read about the friendship these two have between them, and that they created this story together while across the country from each other. I love getting a behind-the-scenes look at creative processes, so this was great to read.
The main positive that stood out to me in this story was the representation. Our main character, Nova is Deaf and wears hearing aids, while her love interest, Tam, is non-binary. As mentioned in the author's note, both characters are Chinese American. I loved the relationship between Nova and her Grandmother's, (who are also queer), which was just endless support and love.
I enjoyed the characters, but unfortunately, wasn't blown away by the story. There was a supernatural mystery element, which I didn't find very mysterious, so that was a little disappointing. The relationships and friendships (Tat was a great bff) really were my favourite part.
The art style was cute, and very much what I enjoy. The art really captured an autumnal, witchy atmosphere which was perfect. However, (and I'm sure this is just me), but I found that the proportions of objects and characters changed often, and it really took me out of the reading experience. There was a point when Nova and Tam were in the bedroom, and the bed changed size multiple times across panels, sometimes being massive and making them look small, and then other times was a regular bed size. It's something so small, but it definitely distracted me!
Overall, this was a sweet and cute story and I enjoyed reading it.
I loved;
· The fact that Nova goes in a grump when she has to answer the landline phone (not a mobile) and has to take her hearing off in order to use it. I don’t take my implant off (because I have 0% hearing without it) but I do fiddle with my device before answering the call and I dread it.
· Nova asking a customer to repeat herself again because she was looking away and mumbling!
· The nanas! Especially their relationship with each other, don’t quote me but I’m sure it’s a f+f relationship.
· How quick the nanas took to refer Tam as ‘they/them’ after being corrected on their updated status.
· The cats, there was an incident where Tam disappeared and I love how the cats realized that they can’t be heard (due to nova being deaf, not sure on the nanas) so they scratched the door before again realizing they can’t hear so they go to wake Nova up herself. Both of my cats always perk up when someone’s opened my front garden gate, and one plays with my phone whenever it rings. Cats are aware if someone’s deaf and actually helps them.
· The blossoming romance, it’s just too cute!
· All the art, the colour too and the fact it’s very fall themed!
Overall, it’s the most adorable autumnal book and it’s perfect to read during fall. You should pick it up when the book releases next month! Of course I have to give it a full 5 out of 5 stars.
This was so adorable. The artstyle was really great and I really loved the relationship between Nova and Tam! I love the best friends to lovers trope so this was perfect for me! I also loved the queer rep and the nonbinary and the hearing aids representation! It was so wholesome and fun. I would recommend this to everyone who wants to have a sweet good time!
Mooncakes is a brand-new graphic novel being released October 15th. With it’s soft-spooky vibes, wonderfully diverse characters and atmospheric artwork; Mooncakes is the perfect Halloween read and, allow me to tell you why I cannot recommend it enough.
Mooncakes is told from the POV of Nova; a witch in training who lives with her grandmothers and secretly still misses her childhood best friend, and Tam; a werewolf on the run, who decides to return to the one place they were happiest. You can all see were this is going right? Yep. Childhood best friends reunited, and yes, the sparks fly!
It was glorious and so very sweet.
In addition to the romance Mooncakes explores a multitude of relationships. Including: Nova’s bond with her family and specifically her grandmothers, Tam’s relationship with their mother and stepfather, and Nova’s connection to her magic. I would like to point out how much I adored Nova’s unique way of controlling her magic. Due to being hard of hearing and wearing a hearing aid, Nova teaches herself new spells and tricks by combining the hearing aid with her magic.
The representation had my heart soaring. Our cast of characters are all Chinese- American. Everyone is also queer. Upon returning Tam comes out to Nova and her family as non-binary; Nova’s grandmothers are happily married and the main romance throughout is f/enby. Furthermore, we also have some lovely scenes like the one below with Nova’s badass grandmothers.
The artwork and illustrations were stunning. The tone was dark and gave a perfect fall setting. It’s valid that the fall setting could also be from, you know – the witches and werewolves, but we’ll go with what I said.
Overall: I highly recommend this graphic novel. I did have one or two issues with the plot and pacing towards the end but so much made up for them. Considering Halloween is just around the corner I feel this is the perfect read; especially if you need something light and spooky after all the heavy horror reads.
This was so cute! ARC provided through Netgalley. I loved everything about This! I devoured it in one sitting!!! 💖💖💖
I was surprised with Mooncakes and the diversity it has. Mooncakes is a about a hard-to-hear girl, Nova, who lives with her grandmas and they are all witches. The other character, Tam, is a non-binary werewolf that returns to fight off a demon. The story between the characters is so adorable and loved it. I really liked how both Nova and Tam are trying to figure out who they are as individuals. The atmosphere and setting of the story gave me so many fall, witchy vibes. Let’s not forget the illustrations, they are amazing!
The only downside was the sudden love story. I wish it had not happened so suddenly. I believe it would have been better to have seen the characters grow more as individuals and then perhaps see how each fits into their lives.
If you love cutesy and magic filled stories, this one's for you!

It has everything that I adore in books. Family, friendship, magic, and love. This is my first time reading about a non binary character also a character that’s hard of hearing so that was exciting. The family and best friend were absolute gems and super supportive. The art style was super cute and the color scheme went well with the story. Overall a great read to start the fall and I can’t wait to get a finished copy in October!
This is the cutest book I've read as of late. The artwork alone was adorable but the storyline puts it over the top. The worldbuilding puts you in the story, and the images really pull you beside the characters. I can't help but love this story.
Nova is a teenage witch living with her two grandmothers in a world where magic tacitly exists. When her childhood friend and love, Tam, a werewolf, comes back into her life, she gets wrapped up in a quest to defeat a demon alongside Tam.
This was a quick and cute read but needed a bit more world-building to truly get a 5 star rating. I found myself wanting more in terms of plot and motivations of the antagonist(s) in order to truly understand. I did, however, really love the representation in this graphic novel. Nova is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids, she lives with her gay grandmas, and is in love with Tam whose pronouns have shifted from she/her to they/them in the time that they have been apart. This gave me major Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes and was equally as cute.
Mooncakes is about a Nova, a queer, hard of hearing witch living with her two grandmothers, and her long-lost childhood friend Tam, who is a nonbinary werewolf, coming into her life because of a horse demon in the region, and having to defeat said demon. Overall, this was a very cute story, and I loved that while the characters were queer and disabled and Asian and it was canonical and mentioned, but it wasn't the focus of the story. I loved the elements just being part of life. However, this is a story about magic, and I felt that a lot of the explanations involving magic were extremely lacking, to the point that I couldn't follow the story. For example, when Nova and Tam were doing the two witches seeing each other's minds thing, I didn't understand anything that happened there, and how it lead to them knowing that Tam would be able to defeat the demon with their wolf magic in the very next chapter. This was near the middle of the story, so the rest of the story I was still confused and not sure whether to trust that the characters' powers were actually what they said they were. The illustrations are beautiful and cute, but the story overall was just fine.
This was a gorgeous story of witchcraft, magic and love that shows us that anything is possible! That love comes in all forms! That not everyone/thingis just good or bad, that sometimes you have to see the whole picture to understand.
A story I would recommend to everyone! I don't want to say too much and ruin the story for you, so please just read it!
I thought this was an ADORABLE graphic novel with some solid story beats and representation! I'm really looking forward to Wendy's future projects in particular - the art for this book was lovely.
3,5 stars!
This was adorable! I loved the writing style and artwork.
The diversity was a breath of fresh air! It’s lovely to see myself represented in YA.
In terms of the plot, I found it to be a bit too fast-paced for my liking and the ending, predictable. I was hoping for more character development or flashbacks between Nova and Tam.
Overall, it was a heartwarming read. Perfect if you need a pick-me-up!
I’ve been wanting to read this since I first heard about it back in July, and it exceeded all my expectations. This graphic novel follows a young teenage witch called Nova, and a non-binary werewolf called Tam, who reconnect after some time apart and rekindle their friendship and explore long suppressed feelings. The main plot follows their quest to destroy a demon horse that is loose in the woods, with the help of Nova’s grandmas and other surprise characters.
First of all, I absolutely loved the characters. The diversity and representation were fantastic and all of the main characters were so loveable. I actually didn’t know much about the plot going into it and it was definitely more action packed than I anticipated. I also really loved the subtle references to other books (A Game of Thrones and The Astonishing Colour of After) as it gave a story rich in magic a realistic element. The art style was stunning and the colours really gave it a cosy autumn feel.
If, like me, your idea of a perfect Halloween is curling up with a good book, I definitely recommend this one as it is absolutely perfect for a cosy, spooky read.
Mooncakes is a beautiful, whimsical graphic novel about two childhood best friends reuniting to fight the mysterious demons plaguing their town. I was immediately attracted to the idea of a witch and a werewolf in a childhood-friends-to-lovers trope. And let me tell you, this graphic novel was exactly what I hoped it would be.
The diversity in this story was amazing. Nova and Tam are both queer and Chinese-American. Tam uses they/them pronouns and corrects people who get it wrong. I loved that most characters would apologize and from then on use Tam's correct pronouns. Nova is also hard of hearing and her hearing aids are an important part of her character. She adapts to even use them with her magic. Another little bit of representation that I adored was that Nova's friend Tatyana looks like a bigger girl... I'm not sure if Walker and Xu intended for her to be plus sized, but as a plus sized reader I was really happy to see that Tat wasn't an average body size/shape.
I also loved the art. It was beautifully drawn and colored. The magic popped and was creative, and I especially loved how all the magic spirits were drawn. The world was so amazing, that I was almost a little let down by it too. That's my only complaint really, that there wasn't just a little more world building to explain some of parts of the story.
At its heart this story is about found family and not having to face your battles alone. I loved how as Nova and Tam's relationship grew and they became more comfortable with each other, Tam started to open up to everyone else. It was nice to watch as Tam realized that they were part of the family, and that not only Nova, but The Nanas and Tatyana, loved them and wouldn't want anything to happen to them.
This graphic novel truly is a story of love and demons, family and witchcraft. It's very adorable, a little bit creepy, and one hundred percent heartwarming. I highly recommend picking it up this autumn.
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-copy for an honest review!
Mooncakes is a graphic novel about two magical people who must fight a spiritual creature all the while navigating a budding new romance.
This book was SO STINKING CUTE!
I really enjoyed the relationship dynamics and how welcoming it was not non-binary folk. I also was super stoked to see the inclusion of hearing aids, because I have yet to see that in a graphic novel.
I was sad there was not more discussion of Mooncakes as the title suggested their would be, but the magic made up for it.
The woodland creatures are my absolute favorite thing.
I high recommend this graphic novel for all my witch loving friends.
This is everything I've ever wanted in a graphic novel. It's super cute with very diverse characters, and of course we cant forget about the magical animals! The magic is so pretty and I loved the storyline! Overall, I just loved it!
This was such a spontaneous read and after hearing great things about it I had to check it out! What a wonderful read. Honestly, the illustrations took my breath away with their colour and their creativity. It touches on themes that aren’t usually seen in YA/graphic novels which is amazing to see as it should be a normality that gender issues are addressed and spoken about freely. This definitely fits in to the fall vibe of graphic novels and with Halloween coming up, it is being released at just the right time! I loved this.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
Super cute graphic novel. Mooncakes does a great job of balancing the supernatural, love and a whodunit. The artwork and story work so well together and it is a very enjoyable quick read! Recommended!
