This was the most magical, perfect read for the Fall. Filled to the brim with people who are supportive and tolerant and facing challenge, the story shows us all the power of having a strong support network and the mighty things we can accomplish when we work together. I highly recommend this enchanting graphic novel!

This had the potential to be great but it was rushed and predictable. The story idea was cool, however it felt like the author rushed everything. It did have really cool supernatural aspects. I would have just preferred more content or more books in a series.

Mooncakes is a cute graphic novel with diverse representation that quickly put me into more of a fall mood.

Nova is a young witch living with her grandmothers and still trying to find herself. When her childhood friend, Tam, a werewolf, comes back into her life with a problem. They work together to solve it.

There was a lot of good in this novel! The representation was wonderful! I loved seeing a non-binary character that was never questioned and just accepted. Seeing a character with hearing-aids was wonderful as well as that isn't something I can recall seeing too often. This was also something that never really came up. It was seen as normal throughout the entire novel.

The art style was wonderful. The colors that were used really set the mood and gave it this fall vibe that also ranged to a darker vibe for the more intense moments. The art style was beautiful, but the colors were magnificent and utterly perfect.

I do wish that more background was available. Nova and Tam's relationship felt very instant love because we don't get the background of the friendship beforehand. I would have loved to see little stories about their friendship as that would have helped fleshed out their relationship more. I felt the magic system could have also used a few more explanations as there were some things that went on that left me wondering what exactly that was.

Overall, this was adorable. It was full of diversity, had excellent characters and truly is a great book to help anyone get into the fall or Halloween spirit!

Mooncakes was a super cute, fun read. The two central characters are Chinese American— one a deaf witch (Nova), the other a non-binary werewolf (Tam). I was pleased to see that the story allowed for Nova to admit that there were times it was hard to experience the world differently, but it never portrayed her as “less” or “weak” because of it. The use of “they” for Tam is noted and accepted.

The story is one of magic, friendship, and love. Additional characters such as Nova’s grandmas and her feisty, science-minded best friend, add their own charm. You’ll find yourself hoping to eat some mooncakes at their table, yourself.

This book has the sweetest characters ever. Tam was my favorite character because I relate to them so much. Fun characters, good representation and interesting story. Overall it was great.

I really loved this! Everything about it is super cute and sweet from the romance to the art style to the overall story. It's everything I needed in my life!

Mooncakes was a cute& light comic. Nova is a witch who kives with her feisty witch grandmotherz. They own and operate a book store that houses all sorts of magical books. Nova's ex(Tam) shows back up in town with a demon problem and Nova, her Nanas, and her best friend try to help Tam. Tam and Nova's romantic relationship is rekindled through the chaos and they form a bond stronger than ever. I thought this was predictable but rhen again I'm not sure its for my age group. I did appreciate that Tam corrected the grandmas about bekng referred to as "them" not "her". The grandmas apologize and there's no judgement or anything weird that older generations sometimes do. It was a decent read that I think my daughter might like.

Mooncakes was a really sweet story, with beautiful illustrations. I loved how Nova wore hearing aids, Tam's pronouns were they/them, and how Nova's grandmothers were kick-butt witches. It was a really fun mix of different themes and supernatural elements.

I do feel like it could have been drawn out just a little longer, and the characters developed a touch more. The ARC copy wasn't quite finished in whole, with the last chapter or so not coloured, just sketched out. While the final copy with obviously be complete, it did get a tad confusing and hard to see without the colours in the crucial end scenes. and you lost the vibe of the story and the magic a bit. But when it the final copy is released, it'll be better!

Thank you for the opportunity to read this!

This was definitely one of the cutest graphic novels I've ever read. Adorable, cozy and heartwarming, perfect witchy read for Halloween. Suzanne Walker's artstyle is remarkable and very pleasing to look at. The story itself was very intriguing and gripping in the moments. Definitely must read for the lovers of witchcraft. It also delivers great representation from lgbtq+ community I'm sure a lot of readers will appreciate, since one of the characters is non-binary and the other one is queer half Chinese, half American witch. I loved every bit of this story and I cannot wait for the final version that comes out in October. I fell in love with Nova and Tam's relationship - friendship and later love. So innocent and sweet!

I definitely recommend, it's a must read for the fall!

I went into this not knowing what it was about. I've only seen one person mention this before aswell. But it's a quick cute read. Perfect for when I needed a break from the book I was reading at the time.
I liked that the main character was deaf.
The story developed at a nice pace. It didn't feel as short as it was. I will happily read more from these characters in the future.

Thank you to Lion Forge and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this eArc.

I read my first graphic novel…as an adult, that is, because I was obsessed with Elf Quest and Archie back in my middle school days! Haha…and my son just got a graphic novel set from his aunt for his birthday so I’ll be helping him read that one.

Mooncakes is about Nova, a young witch that wears a hearing aid, being raised by her grandmothers who are also witches and have a bookshop. That’s my dream right there, to be a witch who owns a book store! 😍 Nova reunites with a friend from long ago, Tam Lang who is a shape-shifter and becomes a love interest. There is a mysterious dark force in town and Nova and Tam have to figure out how to defeat it.

Graphic novels just read fast because the art just moves it along. I love the color palette used by artist Wendy Xu, it gives it a retro feel.

There is a nice representation of so much diversity. There were different cultural celebrations, Sukkot (Jewish holiday) and eating mooncakes at during the Chinese Mid-Autumn festival. I thought it was nice to see a blend of the cultures because my own children have a blended culture as well and we celebrate a lot of things!

The romance between Nova and Tam was so cute! Tam uses “they” pronouns and they have a past together but it was so sweet to watch their relationship grow. And the witchcraft in the book was wonderful since we are in the month of September and I am in the mood for all things witchy!

Overall Mooncakes is a wonderful read full of diversity, action, love, villains and heroes! If you are into graphic novels or starting to get into them again, like I am, Mooncakes is the perfect graphic novel to start with!

ARC received on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Mooncakes is a witchy romance between two Chinese American teens. Nova is a teen witch, who is hard of hearing, and working in her grandmas' book shop. Tam is Nova's childhood best friend, and a werewolf. When they come back to town, they are reunited with Nova when fighting off a wolf demon in the woods. The two come together in order to battle the evil terrorizing Tam. Childhood feelings are reignited between the two among all of the witchcraft and chaos.

This was such a heartwarming and cute graphic novel! I loved Nova and Tam's budding relationship, and seeing them rediscover their feelings for one another. The representation was also fantastic! The art style lends to the cute and sweet, yet spooky atmosphere. A perfect fall graphic novel!

This story was lovely. The characters were so incredible, you could feel their connections to one another. The rep was fantastic. Tam and Nova are relationship goals. Nova and Tat are friendship goals. The Nanas are family goals. This book just has it all.

The whole book had enough back story that I understood what happened in the past, but it wasn't so much that the current story being told was bogged down by it. The twist, while apparent from the introduction of the character, worked for the story and gave it a depth that it wouldn't have had otherwise.

I can't wait to be able to buy this for my library and put it on my Readers Advisory recommendations lists.

I believe this was my first comic books I’ve ever read. Although I can’t wait to see the finish copy so I can see the beautiful colors. I love how there was witches and werewolves 🐺 demons and magical animals and of course the fact that the characters are Chinese Americans that represent LGBTQ+ and non-binary
Totally recommend when it comes out in October . It will make a great Halloween quick read.
Thank you to netgalley for sending me a early digital copy and I’m glad I got one in a trade as well.

actual rating: 3.5

This was a cute book about a witch and a kind-of-werewolf reuniting after several years apart and dealing with everything from evil demons to family drama to their feelings for each other. It was a cute story although honestly the 'defeat the bad guys' part of the plot felt a bit slapped together so it was definitely more of a character driven piece. The art style is also pretty cute if a little unfinished looking at times. I liked the character designs though and it was a pretty cute story, just don't expect a lot of action.

This will be a great read for October! Witches, spells, queer, and super adorable graphics.
I have heard a lot of hype for this book and it is definitely well deserved!

OMG this was the queer, fantasy graphic novel I didn't know I needed! The art was amazing and I loved the storyline. Meeting Nova and Tam, a witch and werewolf respectively at the beginning of the novel you can tell there is some unfinished business between these former friends. Tam had moved around a lot in their life and having met Nova as a kid, they had finally found a place they felt they fit in -- until their family moved again. Tam has returned because of a demon that could only be fought with wolf magic but runs into issues which is how they are reunited with Nova. Nova and Tam are quick to pickup their friendship and a relationship and along the way find a way to vanquish the demon and find out who has called the demon to their world.

This was such a good read -- I loved the characters and the representation of this novel. I hope there is more to come from the authors!

Cute and fun read. It didn't wow me by any means but I enjoyed the story and illustrations. I would definitely recommend as a quick fall read!
