Nova is perfectly happy living with her grandmothers and working in their New England bookstore—until she follows a white wolf into the woods and discovers her childhood crush, Tam. But Tam has been chasing a particularly nasty demon, and they're going to need all the help they can get to defeat it...

This was super cute and fluffy!

There's so much representation—people of color, fat rep, disability rep, and oodles of queer rep, with a F/NB romance at the heart of the story.

It reminded me a little bit of The Witch Boy, but for an older audience, since the leads have graduated high school. However, despite Nova and Tam's ages, this reads very YA and would be appropriate for tweens as well.

My only wish was that it was a little longer!

I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

This was my first ever graphic novel and it didn't disappoint! A cute, lovey witchy read that gave me all the feels. I really enjoyed how inclusive this was, a nonbinary main character, a character who wears hearing aids and much more. This is something that i know will be very important for a lot of people so its lovely to see those things portrayed.

The art style was cutesy and rustic, and the spirit animals were adorable!!

Tam and Novas relationship was great to follow, to see Tam open up and begin to trust someone again, plus the ending brought a tear to my eye!!

Would recommend and can't wait to read more from the authors x

➖This book will be published 15th October 2019➖

〰️My very first graphic novel and I adored it〰️

This book is so up to date with life. It has queer witch who is very hard of hearing. Which makes it great to read as it’s a disability that prevails many (even if they aren’t a witch!)

And a Chinese/America werewolf. How awesome is this to introduce nonbinary characters.

Nova also has two Grandmothers who are in a relationship with each other.

I felt this layout around Nova was absolutely great. In today’s society we need more acceptance of people’s life choices that are personal to them.

And the Invisible parents just knocked my socks off, I was in awe of the imaginary with the help of powerful illustrations in this book.

These are good witches. It’s all around nature too which impacted on me.

Who could have foreseen I’d love this book.

This has opened a doorway to me to look into graphic novels more.

Loved reading this on my iPad however I feel I’d have enjoyed it even more so in physical book format.

It has a young love story running through this which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Suitable for Young adults to teens.
But Adults May love this just as much.

This little book is full of magic, family and friendship. It was good, really, but nothing all that special? I'm glad I read it, but will probably not remember it for very long. I would, however, dive into another story with these characters - I feel like this should be an ongoing graphic novel with a bunch of magical mysteries for me to indulge in.

It's a sweet, inclusive, queer read that I recommend to every graphic novel lover with a taste for magic, family dynamics, great Nanas and a bit of romance.

I give it 3,5 stars because I would have liked to see a bit more backstory and a developed picture of both the magic wielding, the wolf magic and the world all in all.

This was so cute! I loved the story, I loved the art, I loved the diverse representation. I wish there were going to be more volumes to this story because I'd read a whole series of Nova and Tam and the Nanas. Such a fun graphic novel that I think anyone and everyone would enjoy!

Wow! This was such a great and fast read. I truly didn't want to put this book down because I wanted to know what happened next! I loved our main characters and Mooncakes put such a smile on my face. I definitely recommend people to read it.

I only wish there was a little bit more at the end about, well Mooncakes, and the main characters!

What a sweet, wonderful book! So great to see a diverse, queer set of characters living their (magical) lives. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and this was a pleasure to read. A+

I have been excited to read this book since I saw the cover, and I was not disappointed. I loved the art. The colors had a perfect dreamy, mystical quality. The characters and setting really came to life on the page. Tam and Nova are such great characters and all the people that surround them are wonderful. I hope that there is going to be a sequel because I absolutely loved this book and hope there's more.

What initially drew me to Mooncakes is how incredibly cute that cover is. It shows the art style very well and hints at what the book is going to be about. I thought the art was solid for the most part however I think the action scenes could have used some more work. They felt a little awkward in the movement front.

Along with that there were some conversations with jokes that were awkward and in turn it made the art feel awkward in those scenes too. There wasn’t a good flow in the conversation/joke so that the hit of the joke didn’t really hit.

Having said that however, those are my only complaints about this cute graphic novel. This is just a great magical story that gives me all the warm feelings. Two friends that find each other again after many years as they are trying to find their way in the world as new adults. A witch and a werewolf. Best combination ever.
I loved that there was different ideas to werewolves and their magic. I loved how our mc used her hearing aids for a spell. I loved how the magic itself was drawn. Just all the magic was great!

This graphic novel also has great diversity and representation. Both main characters and grandma’s are Chinese American. The werewolf is non-binary. In the graphic novel one of the grandmothers misgenders them but it was dealt with normally. The witch is hard-of-hearing and uses hearing aids sometimes. The grandmothers are a lesbian couple. And it is all so normal.

There is so much love and support from the grandmothers to their granddaughter but also her long lost friend. While her parents might be dead her family is a 100% active in her life and I loved that. Her best friend is from a different walk of life, very science based, but despite their different views on things is always open to listen and help regarding magical things.

All in all certainly a graphic novel worth a read!

Thank you to Netgalley, Oni Press, and the authors for sending me an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was such an adorable young adult graphic novel to read! The storyline follows Nova, a witch and Tam, a werewolf where they team up to face a demon that is after Tam. I adore Nova’s grandmas because not only are they witches, but they run a little bookstore as well! Who doesn’t love a book about magic and bookstores! I definitely recommend reading this book when it comes out in October.

Fun young teenage graphic novel. It's about Nova, who lives with her grandmas and her old friend, Tam, who comes back to town after being away for years. She's a witch and they're a werewolf and they team up to face a demon together.

Great drawings, fairly predictable but enjoyable story. I liked it.

This was wonderful. I loved these characters, and I especially loved the consistent colors used to set a tone. I'm very excited for this to come out so I can read the physical version.

Mooncakes gave me all the Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes!

I wish the two girl’s childhood friendship had been more fleshed out, so it was easier to understand how they got to where they were in their relationship. It felt a little lacking in the character development in that area. This graphic novel was also very predictable, yet still enjoyable!

Otherwise, I thought the illustrations were top notch and really kept me engaged throughout the story!

WOW! This was completely wonderful! I loved how up to date it was on the LGBTQIA community! The storyline was short, but extraordinary. If there is a follow-up to this, I would love to hear more backstory about both Tam and Nova (by the way, I LOVE the names!). The art was beautiful and fit the story so perfectly. I'm so excited to see this in hardcopy, especially so close to Halloween. HOW PERFECT! Thank you Lion Forge and Netgalley for my gifted e-copy.

This is an adorable romantic fantasy graphic novel about childhood crushes Nova ( a witch) and Tam (a werewolf), who are all grown up now. They reconnect and work together to save their town from a scary threat! This graphic novel has everything, it seems. The cast of characters is so diverse! Chinese Americans, a non-binary character, someone that uses hearing aids, other LGBTQ characters, just to name a few.

The artwork in this title is absolutely beautiful. Their expressions, the magic, the action, it all comes out so wonderfully through the art. The pacing was good, and I thought the romance, while a *little* fast, was relatable and so, so cute. I really enjoyed this graphic novel, and I hope there will be a follow up!

This is my first graphic novel that I've ever read! It was so fun and gave me Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes. The main character, Nova, lives with her grandmas after the death of her parents. She's on a journey of discovering herself and the magic she possesses. Her childhood friend, Tam, shows back up into town after disappearing. The story continues on with these two friends joining together to face a demon and rekindling their friendship in the process. I would have liked this graphic novel to be a little longer and a little more detail put into Tom's family and their past. I think it was lacking a little in their character development. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and October is the perfect time to release it! It gave me fall and Halloween vibes throughout the entire novel!

This book was just breath taking. I loved the art work very much. The story was short but it still brought justice to the book. I really enjoyed it and couldn't stop reading it the minute I picked it up. This book gave me a lot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes as well. My favorite character was the Pigeon Head.
I will recommend this graphic novel to my Bookish Instagram followers and provide an review on goodreads. I am so happy I got the opportunity to pick this book and I highly recommend it to other readers.

This book is one of the most wholesome things I’ve ever read. It’s up there with the Tea Dragon books for that cosy magical vibe (and like the Tea Dragon books, this was initially a webcomic)! There’s a lot of great rep here, too, with two Chinese-American main characters who are complex and realistic; one, Nova, is a queer witch who uses hearing aids, and the other, Tam, is a non-binary werewolf. The two of them used to be good friends as children, and when Tam rocks back up in town at the same time as a demon is spotted in the forest, the two reconnect as they try to defeat the evil. The romance between Nova and Tam is gorgeous and believable – it helps that the background of their being childhood friends is really well expressed. They’re really great for each other, and help each other to be strong not only in terms of fighting actual demons, but also the emotional demons they both carry. Tam’s sense of humour is super accurate to the queer teens I know, too!

The side characters are great, too, with my favourites being Nova’s grandmothers – I can’t remember when I last saw an older lesbian couple in a book, let alone one which has such a loving and comfortable relationship. They run a bookshop with a magic section, and are basically super adorable as well as being super badness – they’re a great example of how softness and strength go together. The Nanas are so supportive of Nova and Tam; for example, when Tam informs them of their new pronouns, both Nanas instantly accept this and apologise for misgendering them. Their love for Nova suffuses the pages, and is part of what makes this book feel so warm.

Another thing that brings the warmth is the soft and gorgeous artwork. The colours are autumnal, the knitwear is fluffy, and the hair is full of life! The ARC I read had an uncoloured section towards the end, but the rest of the book had such lovely colouring. I particularly loved the variety of adorable looking forest creatures!

So, if you’re looking for a sweet witchy read, this is definitely the book for you! I highly recommend it for fans of The Prince and the Dressmaker or The Tea Dragon Society, as well as those who love Kiki’s Delivery Service. Five out of five stars from me!
