So mush great stuff packed into one volume! Witches, a werewolf, romance, LGBT+ representation, representation of disabilities, POC and non-traditional family structures! All this combined with really beautiful art and a super cute story!
Lovely story, absolutely will reccomend! Love to read about different lgbtqia+ representation and my students would love to read about them too.
Cute, loved the art style, but I actually found the story a little difficult to follow. I felt dropped into the middle of the story, and the nonlinear style didn't work for me. Still, I loved the concept, and almost wish this was told in prose form instead of a graphic novel.
This was such a cute graphic novel, I love the witchy vibe it totally gives you those autumn feels. The representation in this book is 100% worth the read alone but on top of that you get adorable relationships, witches and werewolves, friends to lovers. Its just so CUTE. Also I actually really enjoyed the art style in this.
In general, Mooncakes fell a little flat for me when it should've been a shoo-in. Diverse sweet witches and magic? Yes, please! The main character was great, yay more deaf representation in any format. She's strong but still very feminine, and confident in who she is. Which makes her counterpart so much more frustrating; they're so very not sure of who they are, what they want, or how to ask for it. And that's okay, and it's nice to have the feminine character be the strong/sure one for once.
The art though starts out incredibly rough then suddenly about 1/3 of the way in, increases dramatically in quality. It's a little jarring, and I hope there's a re-published version someday where the creator gets to go back and re-draw to even it out.
The story felt just slightly off, like there were pieces edited out and not pieced back together. It felt like there were sudden jumps or escalations without enough buildup, so the climax was more confusing than engaging. I liked it, I just didn't love it. There were even magical girl/CLAMP references! I'm very sad I didn't love Mooncakes.
Graphic novels are super hot right now and this one has sweetly drawn characters. With very unique characters and a popular magical storyline this has potential to do well!
I was sent an eArc of this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts.
3 stars
This was a cute, light read. The art style is very pretty but I just wanted more back story on the characters. More development & more story. The plot was ok. I didn't fully understand the magic system & I thought it could use a little more work. Overall it was an ok read. I recommend this to someone who is looking for light, quick read with paranormal elements.
I loved this graphic novel so much that I bought a copy for myself! I look forward to see what Suzanne Walker does next!
The story is interesting, even though it’s the same old cliche of two different magical species falling for each other (A witch and a werewolf.), which isn’t the main storyline, but it acts like it anyway. It isn’t obvious on a flip-through, but the art isn’t really complete, it looks quite unfinished, and even when it is finished, it’s anatomically incorrect and not really good. I’d recommend this to a teenager I guess, or someone who doesn’t care about art or story as much as about romance.
I haven't read a comic in a while and I forgot how much I love them. This was an extremely adorable simple story that brought out only positive feelings in me. I loved modern diverse characters, fantasy world and the feminine illustration style. I read it in one sitting and it was just a simple joy. I'm genuinely in love with the characters and I'm hoping there will be the second volume coming out. The only negative thing I have to say is that I felt like the main story was rushed and the concept could be developed more.
Thank you NetGalley for arc version of this book
I had a coworker who went crazy for this book, but for some reason it took me forever to get around to it. I shouldn't have waited so long...because it's so, so good! The family dynamics are great, the relationship is awesome, the villain is believable (if not unsurprising), the art is lovely....it's just a well-done graphic novel. I look forward to more from the creators!
Adorable
Absolutely freaking adorable.
Witches, werewolves, Lgbt+, disability rep & an evil cult. What more could you ask for?? And is all neatly wrapped up with cutest artwork ever.
Adorable graphic novel about a witch and a nonbinary werewolf. Beautiful artwork. I just wish there was a little more character development, but still a cute story.
This was one of the cutest reads of 2019. This graphic novel has so many elements that could appeal to such a broad audience. Fantasy, amazing artwork, an entertaining story, and some of the most fun characters you will ever meet. A perfect read for when you need something easy and fun.
This was so cute! I loved the art style so much, it was beautiful. I normally have some problems with liking a graphic novel because I never really love characters or the plot because they're so short. But with Mooncakes I didn't have any of those problems! I loved Tam, the non-binary rep was amazing. It wasn't a big deal in the story at all and that's amazing. I just love stories about witches, especially when they're queer. Just a big yes to this story.
Such a cute graphic novel. It was my first comic/ book with a non-binary character and that was really interesting. The story was well structured and really creative. I LOVED the art style, it’s cute and colorful and very clean so you don’t get confused what’s happening or anything like that.
Would love to read something else from this author, especially if it’s another graphic novel
5/5 stars, recommend 100%
Oh my god, this was just so adorable! I love the atmosphere of this graphic novel and I loved the two main characters. The artwork was really beautiful as well, I might go and check out more by Wendy Xu soon!
Super cute and inclusive, with heartwarming characters and an engaging story. I wasn't sure where the story was going at first, but once it kicked off it was very good. The art compliments the storytelling beautifully and I would love to read more about Nova and the next chapter of her life!
Loved this cute little story. I would definitely read more like it and look forward to more in the same style!
