Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
I love Marie Forleo and enjoy her podcast of the same name. This book helps shift your mindset from feeling defeatist and challenged by day to day problems to giving you tools and techniques to overcome your limiting beliefs and help you push yourself forward. There's lots of anecdotes and methods and Marie blends science and research with personal stories.
Absolutely fantastic. Lots of exercises to help you put into action, feels very supportive and relatable to many situations. I read a lot of this genre of book but this certainly has a different feel and since reading has stuck with me. My approach to some challenging situations is changing thanks to the strategies given in this book. Feeling less overwhelmed and anxious as a result.
This book has been sitting on my Netgalley shelf for a lot longer than I'd like to admit. I was just never in the headspace to pick it up. And I think that's a relevant point to make in this review, as this book is more geared towards people who are motivated to start something (planning their future, making a change, starting a business, etc). If you're in a place in life where you're struggling with things and are not yet ready to climb on to the starting block, then this book could ultimately make you feel less motivated. There is work involved, both in this book and in making the change it pushes you to make, and Marie is big and shouty in her insistence that you should just do the damn thing. Combined, that can make you feel intimidated and less-than.
Marie is very positive in her approach, and I get the sense from her that she is one of those can't sit still types. Which...is not my type, and not the type I am. But I still enjoyed how she was able to breakdown so many common blockages and issues. There are some really useful exercises and lines of thought in this book, obviously gained from doing a lot of this type of work on herself and an amalgamation of the theories and approaches of others. I don't know if there was necessarily anything new in this book, but its structure and how the concepts were combined were refreshing.
As self-help books go, this is pop psych and nothing too deep. There is also a heavy slant on promoting her mentoring business and online content. But there are some helpful things in this book, so if you're in the right place it could be the thing you need to propel you to really doing that damn thing.
This book was really positive in its message, the author is clearly enthusiastic about her topic and approach to it!
As with many books of this nature, there will be some parts that may not always feel right for everyone but I found some useful nuggets of wisdom in here!
It definitely made me follow more of the authors work afterwards.
I was struggling to finish this one anyway, but Marie Forleo's behaviour in the last couple of days means I now have no intention of finishing it.
Empowering and inspiring, a brave woman with great advice. I was not super familiar with her but went on to watch her videos afterwards, and now I am a fan
I don’t know what it is about “self help” books that aggravate me. You only need to look at social media to see we are surrounded by people, who, with no training or life experience or anything that makes than any more special than you and I, are only to happy to tell you “you’re not broken” or “you don’t need fixing” but you should buy their book just to check. Ca-ching! There goes your hard earned money. We are being played as gulible schmucks and we are constantly taking the bait.
While it seems North Americans are happy to jump into the bouncy castle of fake magic, I’m a little more skeptical about where the message is coming from and what the ethical standing of the product is. Perhaps it’s because I was always taught to think for myself. To stand up for myself and my beliefs.
“As a society, we are obsessed with optimising every part of our lives – our eating, sleeping, studying, exercising, relationship-ing, and, of course, working… In 2018, the self-helf industry was worth about $10 billion per year in the United States alone” (Tank, fastcompany.com/90380191/why-self-help-books-can-be-harmful).
Tank, quoted goes further to note that self help books offer and create a warped sense of reality. It compares every single one of us but ignores the fact we are all individuals with different life experiences. We are not pre-packaged robots who will take the same message away from the product.
The Université de Montréal in 2015 released a study that shows individuals who frequently read self-help books have hightened levels of sensitivity to stress and higher depressive symptoms. Lupien, one of the authors, acknowledges more work is needed to clear up the chicken or the egg element of the study but notes, “…these books do not produce the desired effects… if such books were truly effective, reading just one would be enough to solve our problems,” but most never stop at one (sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/11/151117112749.htm).
To me, the books that are the most helpful are those that teach acceptance. Those with undertones of Buddhism or Stoicism. Books that teach facing facts is better than living in a fictional narrative where effort and willpower are all you need. If it were true effort and willpower were all we need, we would all be in vastly different places to where we are now. If not, would anyone still be working retail on a public holiday for minimum wage? I think not.
Want to feel better about yourself? Stop comparing what you have with someone else. Find inspiration in the world around you, in the people you talk to. Instagram and Facebook are not real and if you hate the content someone is posting, unfollow them. That includes you reading this book review. Don’t like what I’m saying? Fine. Unfollow. There’s no shortage of clever and fascinating accounts out there that will give you what you need.
I’ll ask it again. Do you want to feel better about yourself? If the answer is yes, stop buying books that tell you you’re not broken and don’t need fixing that spend the next 200 pages convincing you of how, actually, you are broken and here’s the way to fix yourself.
If you only read one personal development book this year, let it be this! It is possibly the best, most practical, most relateable self-improvement book I have ever read - for men and for women. It combines the best ideas that you will read in any number of books - I cannot recommend this highly enough!! Love, love, love it!!
Over the years I have read a lot of motivational and self help books. This one was not for me. There was a lot I already knew, but I didn't really like the style of the book. The book has a lot about how the author personally dealt with things in their own life. I have never heard of the author but gather she is very well known and certainly in the USA. Maybe if you know of her and are inspired by her as it seems many are, this is the book for you.
One of the things the author urges you to do is free up two hours a day and she's heard all of the excuses why you can't too. I have to say that when I studied I managed to fit in so many things and yet when I ended study each time that "extra" time magically disappeared. So a lot of what she said in this section did ring true for me and also the amount of time spent on social media, the internet etc. One piece of advice she gives is to leave emails for a few days before checking them. Personally if I left mine that long I would not be able to face my inbox.
There are an awful lot of quotes in the book but there are also stories of real people that are inspirational. My take away from the book is this "Fact - use what helps, leave the rest" which is just what I am going to do.
Exactly what I expected from Marie, a warm and motivating read that is basically a massive kick up the backside to get you moving and inspired. loved it!
Marie Forleo is a formidable and iconic leader of our era. To simply say "she knows her stuff" is a huge understatement. Marie is a humble, heartwarming, ambitious and a unique trail-blazer of truth.
Everything is figureoutable is more than a book title or just a new buzz word sequence, it's a word trigger for each and every single one of us out there to know that despite how difficult or impossible something may seem, everything has a solution.
I could tell you all about this book but that for me in my opinion would defeat the gift this book can give you, for in this book you don't get just a series of steps to success, you get an experience of trusting that you can and will figure things out.
So please, I implore you to read this book and lean into it whenever you think that you're stuck or that something is blocking you and is impossible to move. Reading this book will be the greatest gift you can give to yourself
With Marie Forleo's trademark sassiness and motivating attitude, this book will inspire you to ditch your excuses and figure out how to make your dreams happen.
Her "figureoutable" philosophy can be applied to pretty much every situation in life, from plumbing problems to reaching your most outrageous, seemingly impossible goals. And it cannot be denied that being more positive and optimistic in your outlook generally tends to improve things, and brings various laws of attraction into play. If that is your bag, you will enjoy this book.
With thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC.
What's not to love about Marie Forleo? She's your best friend online with the great advice, humour, passion, compassion - and an amazing wardrobe! In this book you'll hear Marie's voice in every sentence of this book because 'Everything Is Figureoutable' is her mantra and she absolutely walks the talk.
I think that a lot of the techniques can be found in other books from other authors, but Marie puts it altogether in her inimitable style and makes it all accessible in a single book.
She's honest about her own career and shares her failures as readily as her successes - which is why she is so loved by her fan-base.
I was going to write that this would be a great book to gift to any young woman setting out on her journey - starting her first job or heading off to uni, but really, it will be useful to all sorts of people at all sorts of stages of life. Doesn't matter what age you are or what's holding you back, 'it's all figureoutable'.
I discovered Marie Forleo online, and so I was looking forward to reading her book. Her personality definitely comes across, and she says a lot of things which make sense, and gives some good advice. There are practical exercises to work through. I like her idea of having a mantra to say regularly, although "Everything is figureoutable" is not the one for me, but you get the point. The one thing I would say is that a fair amount of the things Marie says is not new, or at least, it wasn't for me, but it has to be said that sometimes someone can say something in just the right way for it to resonate, and Marie did this for me more than once. Recommended.
I have been following Marie Forleo since I saw her Supersoul Sunday session with Oprah and on YouTube etc so I was absolutely delighted to receive a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Marie is a genuine honest girl from Jersey and she tells us a bit of her background at the begining of the book. I can tell you now that this is a really enlightening read as it gives us diferrent perspectives on how to look at our daily lives. In particular, Marie looks at problems that arise that we can look at from a different perspective - this completely changes how we look at the problem by asking ourselves a question - this puts a new angle on how we view the problem! Marie gives us strategies to deal with our fears that are holding us back from living the best life. Five stars!
This such a fabulous motivational read. Written in such a way that it gives you that warm feeling and encourages you to look at yourself and say yes I am who I am.
Thank you to both NetGalley and Penguin Books for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest unbiased review
This book is one of the best coaching books I ever read out. Marie's simple mantra of 'everything is figureoutable' is amazing and the way she encourages the reader how to apply this to their lives is very clever. The book is like pulling up a chair and sitting down with an old friend. I have followed Marie for many years on social media but never taken a course or listened to her podcasts. I am really loving this book and I can already see how this is going to have a big impact on my life. The best in its genre for sure!
This was such a motivational read, especially when you're in doubt of what you're doing. The language is funa nd easy. I felt really good after reading this. Marie focuses on dealing with your fears and doubts. Instead, she invites you to trust your instincts to do whatever you want to do.
I really loved it. Great one. Definitely recommended.
Thanks so much NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
I love Marie! As someone who is a perfectionist at heart, this book was an inspiring read - I can now get off my backside and get on with things. Progress not perfection!
