Unfortunately I was unable to download this book before the archive date, so I'm not able to leave a review. I look forward to reading and reviewing books by this author in the future.

Read this after watching Crazy Rich Asians movie (which I liked). The Majesties has been compared to a combination of Crazy Rich Asians and The Gone Girl (which I LOVED), so I was set for disappointment as this is nothing like either of those books - this book is, in fact, miles behind. :(

CRAZY RICH ASIANS, but if Gillian Flynn wrote it. This was disturbing, dark, inciting, and insightful and yet . . . there was a lot of "telling, not showing" and the dialogue could be quite stilted and awkward. I wanted to like this more than I did, but I'd still read more from the author.

I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.

This book was just not for me. I think a lot of the disconnect came from how it was marketed - it's described as a thriller and mystery, all the while it was neither thrilling nor mysterious. It also was incredibly slow-paced (which meant most of it didn't hold my interest), and this made it even more disappointing because of what I thought it would when I started out reading it. Just a complete miss for me.

I was judging the L.A. Times 2020 and 2021 fiction contest. It’d be generous to call what I’d been doing upon my first cursory glance—reading. I also don’t take this task lightly. As a fellow writer and lover of words and books, I took this position—in hopes of being a good literary citizen. My heart aches for all the writers who have a debut at this time. What I can share now is the thing that held my attention and got me to read on even though it was among 296 other books I’m charged to read.

What an interesting plot twist… kept the pages moving.

I wanted to absolutely love this novel. The opening was amazing, it had me wanting more, but then somewhere in the middle it fizzled out. This made me sad. It did pick up towards the ended, but I felt it was a little too late. The Majesties by Tiffany Tsao had so much potential. Can i request a do over?

Thank you Netgalley, the publishers and the author of this novel for an advanced readers copy of this novel for my honest review.

Dark does not even begin to describe this book. Without giving too much away the story starts off with a very WTF just happened moment and then slowly weaves the tale of a very dark and twisted family.

Highly recommend if you would like to be disturbed and uncomfortable with what goes down in a book.

I think that the greatest disservice done to The Majesties: A Novel by Tiffany Tsao is the comparison to Crazy Rich Asians: A Novel by Kevin Kwan. The only thing they have in common is that both authors are Asian and are about large rich Chinese families and their often very complicated family dynamics.

Having said that, The Majesties was a phenomenal book all on its own. A multigenerational drama with a murder mystery as the central plot was enough to hook my interest and keep it. This was a serious book, dealing with serious and complicated issues. Tiffany Tsao's writing and word-building are just phenomenal. The story flows and hooks you right from the first sentence to the very end. You get a real feel for the characters and can believe that they are real people; you end up visualizing situations being described on the pages. It's almost an immersive experience and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to finally read such an amazing book.

This family drama about the Sulindos, a Chinese-Indonesian family dynasty, is about two sisters, Gwendolyn and Estella and their relationship with their family. It opens with Gwendolyn lying in a coma, desperately trying to regain her memories and consciousness to reveal what happened to her. Is Gwendolyn the only survivor of her sister, Estellas evil poisoning of her family? The book centers on Estellas Motives, but the family history is riveting.

The characters are well developed and easy to become involved with; none of them very trustworthy. This is a family proud of their wealth and opulence, living the life of the rich and famous. Visits to Jakarta, Paris, California Coastline and Melbourne. Gwendolyn has developed a high fashion design using insects and silkworms, but it is seen as highly controversial because of the treatment of the insects. Estella is in an unhappy and stifling marriage to Leonard, who resents and punishes her for her family's wealth.

The ending will touch every emotion in your soul.....it is disturbing and unforgettable and will probably anger some readers. I thought it was brilliant.
Thanks to netgalley, Atria Books and Tiffany Tsao for sharing this ebook ARC.

I could not get into this story and will not be finishing it. I hope that others can enjoy it more than I did.

I started reading this book and found that it was not for me. I didn't want to review a book that I didn't finish.

Not a favorite. I didn't connect with any of the characters and often felt frustrated by how so many of them didn't just flaunt their wealth but made others feel bad for having that same wealth. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

This writing style and book just weren't for me. I found myself just being confused and disinterested the more I read. The story mostly wealthy, egotistical people looking down on the general public. Though I think the premise could have been promising and there was a decent plot but I feel from what I read there was poor execution.

What a fantastic read this was! This multi-generational tale explores what happens to a wealthy, seemingly perfect Chinese family after an almost unbelievable trauma occurs. Tiffany Tsao is an extremely talented writer who manages to immerse you completely in this world of insane wealth marred by haunting tragedy. This story was shocking from beginning to end. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to see what the author comes up with next. 4.5 stars.

I expected a fast=paced thriller of a novel after seeing it described as Gillian Flynn meets Crazy Rich Asians, however, that's not exactly what was delivered.

Waking up in the hospital after being poisoned by her sister (along with the rest of her family - all 300 of them, children included) - Gwendolyn is the only survivor to her sister Estella's murder plot.

Sounds like a wild premise, right? With a combination of mistimed pacing and a lack of reasoning, this book fell short for me.

Thank you to Netgalley and Atria Books for advanced access to this title!

This book did not do it. I have tried to read it forever, but it is slow. The writing is lyrical, but the plot is just so meh.

Not my cup of Joe. I had this one on my list for a bit, and took a few tries at it, thinking perhaps it was just my mood, as I am a mood reader. But no luck getting settled in.

It wasn’t horrid, but it just felt like a comedy with dark content and I struggle with the marriage of those types of reads. Again, it may not work for me but you may love it so as I said, it was not a “do not buy” book, so I say go for it and see how it appeals to you.

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. I wanted to like it, the writing was lovely, the story was engaging, and the ending I didn’t see coming. But I wasn’t motivated to read it and I wasn’t engaged in the story or the characters. I didn’t hate it, and I see the value in the story and the writing, but at the same time I didn’t like it. No particular reason, it just didn’t grab me.
